Would be amazed if people have restarted buying cars at a pace faster than what we saw in July 2019.
Yup retail sales for July 2020 is here , comparable with the wholesales of June 2020 !

New vehicle registrations down by 36.27% in July 2020

According to the data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), vehicle registrations declined by 36.27% in July 2020. Overall sales stood at 11,42,633 units, compared to 17,92,879 units in July 2019.

The number of new vehicle registrations have increased compared to last month as the country continues to open up post the Covid-19 lockdown.

Rural demand is strong courtesy of a good monsoon spell and this has positively impacted tractor, small CV and motorcycle sales.

Despite high liquidity, banks and NBFCs are still being cautious when funding auto retail. Vehicle funding percentage has fallen by 10-15%, which is affecting demand revival.

Passenger vehicle sales saw a decline of 25.19%. 1,57,373 units were sold compared to 2,10,377 units in July 2019.

Sales of commercial vehicle dropped by 72.18%. 19,293 units were sold in July 2020 compared to 69,338 units in the same month previous year.

Tractor sales increased by 37.24% to 76,197 units.

FADA expects the market recovery to continue in the month of August as it marks the beginning of the festive season.

Wow this is amazing data. I think this is the first time FADA has broken sales up into OEMs.

Retails sales is still lagging a lot behind industry dispatches. There is a recovery happening but it is slower than expected.

From FADA, sales of cars:

  • May 2020 : 30749
  • June 2020 : 126417
  • July 2020 : 157373 +25% from June

In January 2020 before COVID hit, 290879 cars were sold that month.

Re: July 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Just a thought.

Would you consider splitting up the C2 segment trends chart?

There are too many cars in that chart, which makes it hard to see. Additionally, it might make sense to consider cars like the Venue and Creta as seperate segments.

I wish Nissan could do similar strategy in India, i like their legacy and the cars they built in the overseas

Either that, or as someone else suggested, we think of splitting up the C2 segment a bit as it has a very wide range of products. I for one, don't think a Vitara Brezza and Kia seltos should belong to the same segment.

Gurpratap S Boparai, MD of VAG has openly spoken about India not being a favorable market to do business. More uncertainties in these uncertain times?

Re: July 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I was a little curious to know how each car dealer was doing, so did a little digging to find out number of cars a single dealership would sell
and here are the results

Manufacturer - Number of Dealers, Cars sold per dealer
Datsun - 184 (3.77)
Ford - 381 (10.33)
Honda - 430 (12.52)
Hyundai - 1242 (30.76)
Jeep - 82 (4.88)
Kia - 151 (56.30)
Mahindra - 858 (12.70)
Maruti - 1332 (73.40)
MG - 149 (14.12)
Nissan - 167 - (?)
Renault - 434 (14.80)
Skoda - 87 (10.60)
Tata - 949 (15.81)
Toyota - 318 (16.93)
Volkswagen - 157 (12.02)

Got the number of dealerships from a separate website
I guess the numbers could be not very accurate. Specially Maruti number of dealers looks too low, and number of cars sold per dealership is way too high.

Pardon my ignorance. But does this mean 877 FCA products were sold against - 711 MG. I mean, last I read was 2000 odd for Hector alone in Jul 2019 and only around 400 for Jeep Compass in July 2020 .. Somehow this is not making sense to me right now..

Maruti has some 2600 outlets so cars/dealer should be 35-36 off which most will be entry level hatchbacks and B2 segment.
Creta has more of B2 and C2 segment sales where margins are better, I bet Hyundai dealers will be more profitable than Maruti dealers
Tata at ~16 is not bad actually as most of their sales is coming from Nexon and Altroz which again will have better margins

711 MG in 2019 yup launch month of Hector , rest I have no idea on this company with lot of tall claims , their retail is about 1300 nos. in June with 2K wholesales in both June & July , may be affected by border clash sentiments & boycotting.

As per this data, Tractor sales have increased in fifteen states compared to last year.
Is it because of the Covid-19 , or there is some other reason?

Re: July 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The charts are giving information on sales figure for Gypsy in July 2020. Needs to be checked up for any aberrations as the production of Gypsy was discontinued in Dec 2018 as the vehicle did not meet the crash norms nor was the engine upgraded to BS6 norms.

Kindly correct me if I am wrong.

Great data there, sir! However, why aren't the prices tanking in the used market? I want the Alturas G4 prices to bottom out because there's literally no sales. I want to buy it, at non-Indian prices ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
