1. XUV300 (6 airbags)
2. Ecosport (6 airbags)
3. Venue/Sonet (6 airbags)
4. XUV300 (2 airbags)
5. Nexon (2 airbags)
6. Ecosport (2 airbags)
7. Venue/Sonet (2 airbags)
Good analysis.

One correction though - The top variant of XUV300 comes with 7 (not 6) airbags.

Buddy, this is pure speculation. Let's look at some facts.
In a crash, for a car to be safe it needs:

1. Structural Integrity eg. crumple zones etc.
2. Bodyshell Stability - unstable bodyshell would rollover.
3. Add on safety features eg. Airbags, seatbelts etc.

When it comes to kids child seats are crucial.
It wouldn't matter if you had 6 airbags if the child was not in a child seat. Airbags can soften the impact, but they won't hold the child in place which the child seat+Isofix will do. Yes, the extra airbag will cushion the impact, but that's about it, what about the return impact?

Also weight of a car does not play a huge part in terms of safety - eg. Why do people die during Bus crashes? Or even during train mishaps. Yes a Nexon might not rollover as easily as a S-Presso, but keep in mind the high centre of gravity also plays a part & the design of the car.

I agree with your list, but not entirely, here's my take.
1. XUV300 6 airbags
2. XUV300 2 airbags
3. Nexon
4. Ecosport 6 airbags
5. Venue/Sonet 6 airbags

Now isn't it commendable that the XUV300 has scored 5 stars for adult & 4 stars on child safety with only 2 airbags?

Has the highest ground clearance and biggest boot amongst the competitors! 392L is very close to the first gen Creta’s 402L. They could have compromised a little on the boot size and increased the rear seat legroom( a deterrent for many)

Why is there a difference in engine output for the diesel manual and automatic variants?

Are we getting a VGT CRDi in Sonet just for the TC gearbox?

392 liter of boot!!
It's highly impossible unless Kia has given a second row bench same as third row bench of Datsun Go+.
Length being sub 4 mtr and wheelbase being nearly same as other competitors, having a boot of 392 ltr doesn't quite add up to overall math.

Plus don't forget the credibility of the source.. the infamous RL guys, who has messed up many such articles in recent past.

So hold your horses till official figures are released.

With class leading ground clearance and boot space specs are definately on Sonet's side. Add to this the first in class features like ventilated seats, subwoofer and IMT, competitor get more vulnerable.
Now only thing pending is, price of the car. Price the car attractively, and you have month long waiting period ready even in this time of corona..

Re: A Close Look : Kia Sonet

No proper MT with 1.0 turbo petrol? The venue has this combo. I think Kia will lose out on a sizeable part of the market. This distribution of manual works between seltos and creta but at the price of 10L manual is lot more important than in a 20L car.

Re: A Close Look : Kia Sonet

392L of boot space, 211mm of GC and diesel in Seltos state of tune with automatic! Things look quite interesting!
But I'm doubtful of the authenticity of this data as there are a lot of spelling mistakes and it shows that the automatic is only available with the lower HTK+ trim among the tech line variants which is stupid.

You can read more about it if you like here

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/road-...cap-tests.html (Hyundai Venue gets 4 stars in ANCAP tests)
Thanks for pointing this out! It's a bit worrying as I was so sure I wanted to go for the Sonet . Now I have more questions :

1. The post you mentioned refers to an NDTV article as proof of the Venue platform and a Wiki source which in turn refers to a Forbes article as proof of the US Venue sharing the Accent platform. Is there an official source?
2. How much do these platforms share? It's so frustrating that there seems to be no transparency from the manufacturers regarding this.
On the one hand, the Forbes article mentions that the wheelbases of the Accent and Venue are different, on the other hand - the official website mentions "SANTRO comes with the High strength steel with 63% AHSS 25HSS." and does not mention the percentage for Venue, however there are many articles that mention Venue has "69% Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) + High Strength Steel (HSS)"
There is also a US article that mentions the use of AHSS and HSS.

The Santro's 2 star rating at GNCAP is surely discouraging. However, given that Venue has some more AHSS+HSS, I'm hoping Sonet with 6 airbags is a much safer vehicle.

Re: A Close Look : Kia Sonet

Spotted the Sonet today doing decent speeds on the KMP near Sohna. The car looks great and bigger than the Brezza! Loved it and on my radar now for a purchase - hope they get the suspension tuning right - I found the Seltos to be a bit stiff.

All in all though, a visually stunning package

Took some pics from the rear but not able to upload. Will try again later.

This is too good by Kia if true. They are offering the same 115 ps diesel engine as Seltos/Creta in the diesel automatic variants.

I totally agree with the fact that the build quality/structural stability is most important and child car seats are crucial for kids. My point was that 6 airbags are also important. The Nexon marketing team would like everyone to believe that side-airbags don't really matter. They sound like they have achieved perfection in safety with a 5-star GNCAP rating. However, M&M felt that they should have 5 more airbags in the top spec XUV300 in spite of scoring higher than Nexon with just 2 airbags. That says something, and is indeed commendable.

Also, the weight of the car is in fact a pretty important factor for safety. You can check out what the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has to say about the significance of the vehicle's size and weight. In the interest of time here's a snippet from the article -
Quote:
"Weight is important when two vehicles collide. The bigger vehicle will push the lighter one backward during the impact. That puts less force on the people inside the heavier vehicle and more on the people in the lighter vehicle.

IIHS demonstrated the role of size and weight in a series of crash tests in 2019, pairing a midsize SUV and small car made by Kia and a large car and minicar made by Toyota in collisions with each other. Both of the smaller vehicles, the 2018 Kia Forte and 2018 Toyota Yaris iA, had good ratings in the five IIHS tests relevant to driver protection, but they performed poorly in collisions with the larger vehicles.

Improvements in crash protection have made vehicles of all sizes safer, but bigger vehicles are still safer than smaller ones even with those improvements. As the chart below illustrates, crash deaths decline as vehicle size increases. A similar chart using weight instead of size would look almost the same."
Here's a short youtube video from them which provides a good illustration:

Yes I understand what you're implying here and it is truly a good initiative by M&M.

Also thanks for sharing this informative link & video.
