Re: Legendary Mitsubishi Pajero to go out of production in 2021 Products do come and go, but it takes a lot of midnight oil to build a legend. Such products are strategically very important for a brand that wants to grow. They help you enter new markets, build brand reputation, increase brand recognition by leaps and bounds. These products contain a huge marketing potential other than just operational level profit and loss.
Had it been just P&L, Volkswagen would have never made the Veyron; but they knew that this product is a display of their engineering prowess to the world. Some products may make loss on paper, but the marketing push they give to your brand is way higher than what you lose. Pajero was the Dakar king, everyone knows it. Even today the SFX commands respect on our roads - and they killed their product. Leaving other markets aside, at least in the Indian market; the Pajero, if well updated, was the product that had the brand pull and reputation tht it could have been the second 4 digit seller after Fortuner, absolute lack of vision IMO.
I don't know if there is a product with such a deep penetration in entire Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. And they pulled the plug on it!
Companies preserve and continue these monikers only because the name itself makes the product worth a look, I am still unable to tell my mind that how this decision is more sensible than building a new Pajero grounds up. Pajero was the response of Mitsubishi to Prado, look how different is the fate of both; both have their name enlisted in the list of legendary SUVs, Toyota kept on strengthening the Prado, these guys killed their golden egg laying hen!
