Re: Affordable 2-door coupés / hatchbacks in India: Still a distant dream?

Apart from loss of practicality,

When
1. one wiper instead of two
2. Three lug nuts instead of four
3. Single horn instead of double
Are said to be signs of cost cutting.

Then
2 doors will be observed as yet another cost cutting by Aam junta.

Re: Affordable 2-door coupés / hatchbacks in India: Still a distant dream?

I am of opinion that if a two door car is offered with a lower capacity engine like 600CC it might be more economical and can be practical for usage as a second car.

This trend is prevalent in Japan, as cars with 600 CC or lower capacity are popular there.

I wouldn't buy one, unless its a project/beater car that i drive for "fun".
Practically it doesn't make sense, I generally drive alone even then, there is the added convenience of opening the rear doors to put stuff like my backpack, groceries or any smaller luggage items.

Re: Affordable 2-door coupés / hatchbacks in India: Still a distant dream?

What does a 2-door achieve? If it is about not wasting space, most times only a single person use the car, we should have a single door car with narrow body. Many 2 door cars have 4 seats, but why? I didn't find climbing into the rear seat of a Mini a good experience the last time I tried. Only purpose for a 2 door with 4 seats is pure show off.

Re: Affordable 2-door coupés / hatchbacks in India: Still a distant dream?

2 door cars are for only two segments :

1. Smart compact car for single driver with under 600cc engine.
2. Sports car segment with a howling V8 engine.

No other car segment likes 2 doors.

I’ll gladly buy a 2-door hatchback even in today’s time. I know they’re not practical but the sheer driving pleasure in a low slung 2-door hatchback would be more than a bigger 4-door car any day.

How can we forget the magical Zen Carbon? A Zen Carbon is still a head-turner and isn’t the two-door design the reason we loved it so much

Definitely I would pick a 2 door car as my 2nd or 3rd car. I wonder why Hyundai never introduced their Veloster here in India, I guess it uses the Verna platform. Even though Veloster isn't a proper 2 door hatch, something like that would suit the Indians more.

Unless Maruti decides to take it mainstream one day

From petrols to diesels (and hoping to reverse it now), from manuals to AMTs, they have shown that they can sway the market.

Well that is its appeal. A super feel good factor. Like how we care about outer appearances in a car even though we spend the whole time sitting inside.

I have been keen on picking a Jiminy myself. Infact I am even exploring importing one directly.

Re: Affordable 2-door coupés / hatchbacks in India: Still a distant dream?

Even if they were launched, the way any average Indian consumer would perceive it as not-so-practical at first because of missing rear passenger doors

If you ever show it to your family members who aren’t much into cars, their first thought would be:

1) 2 seater car?
2) Where’s the other 2 doors?
3) How do we get in?

So, it wouldn’t have made a mark in anyone’s buying decision.

Besides, iKon in the pic shown on the opening post, looks ugly as hell

I don't see myself buying a 2 door anytime soon. UNLESS it is 4-5 years down the line and it is an electric car. Then also, it will be a backup and not the main car in the garage.

Re: Affordable 2-door coupés / hatchbacks in India: Still a distant dream?

2 door cars are impractical for long term in our country. We are living in a country where car penetration is still low. And most of the time we have 3 to 4 passengers using the car.
Also while traveling long distances, we take many unexpected breaks because passengers might need them.
It would be physically tiring for passengers to use the backseat regularly.

But I might change my mind and buy something like this as my second car if Tata decides to build one. Affordable 2-door coupés / hatchbacks in India: Still a distant dream?-images1.jpg

Re: Affordable 2-door coupés / hatchbacks in India: Still a distant dream?

I feel its not just about 2 door looks but also about a powerful motor under the hood. Secondly we should get some affordable 2 door sports cars in India like the Mazda Miata, Fiat 124, Subaru BR-Z/Toyota 86 etc.
If such cars are available under a 45L price tag, will be a good option but definitely as a second or third car in the house.

Guys...Koenigsegg already has an answer to this question, although I would prefer to not touch upon the affordability factor

Re: Affordable 2-door coupés / hatchbacks in India: Still a distant dream?

3 Door hatch was great for a time when saving the price of 2 doors was significant, I guess that wont work anymore. Even during the time of Tata Nano design they would have given it a thought and scrapped it.

Europe as well is losing the 3 door hatch. Here is a report, US as well has very few left as the market world over is shifting towards SUV.

I think the affordable cars in India are largely bought by people who needs it for their family , so 5 door is preferred over 3, those who want something for recreation can certainly afford to pay for the ~27 or so 3 door cars on sale in India is what it looks like. A search on Carwale returns the following.
