Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

Voted for Multiple cars given a chance, but honestly it depends on the requirements and the location too.

In India, we almost alwayshad 2 cars with overlapping ownership. Was using a Duster RXZ for my daily office runs on weekdays (100km each day) and i20 petrol for the city runs on weekends. Worked very well and made sure there was always one car at my disposal.

The same case wouldn't work in Berlin, I can't take the car to my office so needed only a weekend fun car only for outstation drives. The public transport is excellent here so there's no need of having a beater car ( a bicycle does the job perfectly). Hence having only Mini Cooper S for foreseeable future, even if we get a bigger car - Mini will be replaced first since the parking is really expensive here.

Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

Voted for multiple. For me personally, I feel 3 cars would be ideal. One, a small hatch that can be used as a beater/daily driver and maybe automatic. Second, a fast fun to drive sedan preferably a RWD like a bimmer. And third, a mid size SUV for trips and bad roads.

Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

I did not vote for anything. It depends. Both ideas have their pros and cons.

I have 2 cars and 3 bikes and every month I think to sell at least 2 bikes.
  • TVS Jupiter is most practical so do not want to sell it.
  • RE is close to my heart so can't sell it.
  • Kinetic Honda is modified and has a nostalgic feeling, so can't sell it.
  • Santro is a beater car so can't sell it.
  • XUV is highway cruiser and close to my heart so can't sell it.

It sounds very fascinating to have multiple vehicles but this also means
  • Additional parking space
  • Responsibility of cleaning them.
  • Additional insurance expenses
  • Additional maintenance expenses
  • Responsibility of rotating them.

If the above concerns are not a problem for you, then you can make a choice.

Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

Depends on the budget as what might be expensive for one may not be for another. Someone who say has a budget of 50 lacs for a car, might do well to consider getting two cheaper cars that may serve different purposes. However, for a person with a budget of says 15 lacs, doesnt have much option to get 2 decent cars with the same amount. He will have to go the pre-used route to achieve the same or get a car and a bike. Multiple vehicles would also entail additional maintainence and insurance costs.

I'll go for a very boring and bland answer.
If I have INR 35 lakhs, I'll go either for a [Seltos or Venue or Jeep] + one Honda Activa.
Keep the rest in bank FDs and use the interest to cover the fuel and servicing costs.

Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

Voted for multiple cheaper vehicles for two reasons.
1. Peace of mind if one of the car fails
2. One of the beater car can be given to friends/family when asked for emergency use. I feel sad to see my best car being driven by others. I can never sleep peacefully knowing the only car I have is not with me.

Multiple used vehicles!

I've got a Remapped Freestyle Diesel & a Speed Triple at the moment. If all goes well, in the next 4 years I would prefer to get additional car - a used VRs and upgrade my Speed to a S1000R/Streetfighter

Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

I am thinking of buying Harrier or similar SUV for around 20 Lacs in next 1-2 years. But then sometimes thinks the same way, why spend hard earned 20 big grands on single car? Current thinking is to buy Nexon Diesel for SUV'sh feeling and buy Tiago Automatic for city use. That will give me options to drive 2 different cars. Also wife will get small car which will be handy for her little usage. After seeing Rapid Rider pricing, I can have Nexon and Rapid both brand new cars together at the same time to satisfy my driving passion.

Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

Voted for multiple inexpensive cars.
In 2019, we had a Skoda Fabia, Jeep CJ3B, Honda CBR.
When dad retired in 2019, I couldn't take the open top Jeep nor CBR250 to office during monsoons. And dad needed an AWD for trips to our native place.
So, we added a used and well maintained Skoda Yeti 4x4.

Skoda Fabia - daily driver
Jeep CJ3B - weekend beach drives
Honda CBR250 - Sunday morning rides
Skoda Yeti - dad's go-anywhere car

Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

Voted for multiple cars. I currently use Polo & City as my daily drivers alternatively and have my A4 for longer/weekend drives. City was primarily driven by my father but he has almost given up driving inside delhi and for the longer drives A4 is the pick for him as well. My office is located in Karol Bagh in Delhi so I never plan to take my A4 there anytime soon regularly considering the major parking issues and finding new scratches on the parked car every month.

I do eventually plan to sell Polo & City in a couple of years and switch to probably a single car for daily use to something like T-roc/Taigun but can never have one single car for everything considering my office location.

Parking at home is not an issue as we have covered parking for 2 cars and open parking for another 2.

Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

Voted for Multiple Vehicles. Probably a good pocket rocket (Rapid TSI / A Ford Figo TDCI), One practical mover (A Jupiter), One for the occasional solo rides (A Tbird / An Avenger) or a street bike (Duke/FZ Series) depending on the ride preferences. Here are a few reasons to go with it:

1. I end up experiencing a Variety
2. My risk is spread across (Not putting all the eggs in one basket kinds)
3. Would not be easily bored! Have one for an occasion
4. The Depreciation is spread too, probably better hedged. A direct reduction in a higher cost vs smaller % reductions on a spread is better.
5. your quest for those mods can be fulfilled in one of the options and always have a stock

The availability of space / Multiple maintenance / Insurance etc is a bummer but I can live with that

Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

Voted for multiple vehicles.

Currently, there are three vehicles in our house (two own - Jazz and City, and one official- Scorpio) but we have parking space for only two of them, so the third finds a parking spot at someone else's place. As per our requirement, we shall need a third vehicle of our own soon, which means there will be a scarcity of parking place again. We are therefore, thinking of taking on rent some parking place nearby our house.

I feel this questions depends upon a lot of factors which are unique to all. In our case, we need to go to work in different directions and different timings which necessitates the presence of multiple vehicles. Before the Corona times, we had only two vehicles, since one of us would be using the occasional public transport to get to work. But now, to avoid public transport and the likes of hired cabs, we added a new member just last month. Maybe someday, when mom retires, we can go for a slightly more premium car to be used for occasional drives.

Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

Pre marriage, it was 1 car, but then it's been 2 cars (even though the other car barely runs).

Till 2011, I had an SX4. Got married and bought i10 just for kicks. Then in 2014, wanted to change both in budget of 15 lacs. Could have bought a Corolla, but went for City and Dzire. This year we had budgeted 30 but instead of going for 1 vehicle, were going to go for Seltos and Brezza / Baleno. Anyway that's pushed till next year but the same sense will continue with a refreshed budget.

Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

Voted for option B. For the one reason: one expensive car = more heart-burn, more anxiety and greater costs of maintenance when it has to also runs errands, downtown and uptown.

That odd nick, that scuff, being used as a selfie backdrop, a huge bull ramming into the door while fighting for a mate near the "subzi-mandi": ALL of these, and more, cause discomfort in me; yes, the very thought of these "possibilities".

Had it being EU, maybe one "expensive" car by Indian standards, that too if in FR or DE, not in Italy. In India : NAH!

But, it is good to see so many members voting for option A. I can only conclude that there are parts of India, that are enormously car friendly.

Re: Your ideal garage: One expensive car, versus many inexpensive cars & bikes?

Multiple Inexpensive cars. I love sedans and pseudo Suvs only for driving in Rains in Delhi/Ncr because 4 chamach baarish aur 4km ka jam is true here.

And then 1 suv which can take me to the most difficult of terrains here in India

In a 1 Cr budget - C class, Seltos top model dct, Endeavour 4*4
