Rumour: Maruti exploring leasing option to revive sales

According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki is said to be evaluating the possibility of offering leasing options to its customers.

It has been reported that leasing options could provide dealers with an additional revenue stream at a time when sales are expected to tank due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier, Maruti had started offering leasing options to corporates. It could now be extended to individual customers who are likely to prefer to lease a vehicle over purchasing it outright.

Rivals Hyundai and Mahindra already offer leasing options to their customers.

In our market where people hold on to their cars for long, leasing is bound to be an expensive proposition.IMO it will not work in India.
But with covid, times are changing and leasing gives people a stress free approach to buy and use a car without financial liability associated with loans.

With car loans getting cheaper, it will be interesting to see how Maruti markets this.

Leasing is cheaper when the residual value aka resale value is high. Leases in india should be cheaper than abroad where depreciation is high and residual values are low.
