A brochure of our good old Amby with the Stride Engine.

Back in those days, I used to work in an ad agency in Trivandrum which used to handle Marikar Motors who then were the only dealers for HM products. That's how I got this .

Just correct me if I am wrong. The stride engine was slightly low on power and brought out to make a difference in fuel efficiency?

They should re-launch the Amby with modern engine, Electricals, steering and suspension. The in seat comfort of the Amby was unparalleled. The classic retro look of the Amby will find many takers.

I doubt if the sales will ever make it up to the investment required to get the project into working. It can never replace the Dzire as a sedan cab seeing the latter’s reliability and massive compatibility with CNG. The only hope is that it could make a comeback as an official government vehicle as a part of the ‘Make In India’ program replacing the Ciaz. And the private car market has matured a lot over this period of time.

But nonetheless, I’d rather hope that HMIL would launch the Contessa with a basic 1.8 petrol engine with some basic amenities like a good AC and PS. It would make it a good appeal to petrol heads as restoring a rusty Contessa is an expensive deal, forget about modding it. And once popular as an IAS level government vehicle it might become a part of ‘Make in India!’

Enough of the fantasies, none of it is happening.
