Car discounts provided by the OEMs to their employees

Thanks to the Team-BHP fan (he prefers to remain anonymous) who sent these images in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this page!

The Team-BHP fan works in the R&D department of a carmaker and has sourced information from his friends who work in different OEMs.

Car discounts provided by the OEMs to their employees-oem-employee-discounts-vehicles.jpg

The list includes regular discounts, special discounts as well as other benefits to employees offered by various carmakers like Renault-Nissan, Maruti, Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra, and Ford. Two-wheeler manufacturers like TVS, Yamaha, and Royal Enfield have also been listed.

Maruti is offering 8-12% discount based on the car model, while Tata is offering 5-10% based on the model and Mahindra is offering 6-12% based on the model and variant. Mahindra employees have to choose between employee discount and dealer discount. Renault-Nissan is offering 4% discount on ex-showroom price for all models and Hyundai's discount varies according to the number of years of experience with the company.

TVS and Yamaha are offering 3-5% discount depending on the model and Royal Enfield offers 25% discount once in two years and additional 25% discount on riding gear and accessories.

A friend working in TCS Bhubaneswar once said that there is always some special discount for all Tata group employees. He was offered around Rs. 40K off a Zest around a few months back as an additional discount for being a TCS employee. I am not sure of the logic behind the amount and if it varies from company to company inside the Tata Group.

I work in a Tata Group company, I dont think there is any discount on any model for Tata group employees. I had been considering buying a Harrier in the pre Covid era, but have not been offered any discount. Although there is some discount for Tata Motors employees I have heard.

I regularly get emails on discounts. Just today got a mail announcing some online booking platform for cars alongwith discounts.

Discounts always vary with the type of car. Currently saw least discount on Nexon, Harrier totaling 40k discount. As far as I remember, have even seen discount of 1.2 lakhs on Hexa. Probably was some festive season.

Probably they see potential in some group companies, or maybe it depends on how active the HR of the respective companies are

I got Rs. 10000 discount for Harrier BS6. I see that the offer is still active.

Re: Car discounts provided by the OEMs to their employees

I bought my Chevrolet Spark back in 2009 through employee purchase scheme. Discount was offered to employee's relatives as well. I had to get a form filled by dealer and submit to my relative in GM. He got it approved by his HR and sent it to the plant. I waited 1 month for the delivery of the car as these orders were processed separately. Normal OTR price was 3.9x Lakhs and I paid 3.6x Lakhs (discount of around 30k). It was a very good offer. I got top variant for the price of mid variant.

Someone known to me bought a Beat (40k discount) and Chevrolet Cruze (1.5 L discount) around the same time. He paid just ~14 Lakhs for top end diesel automatic LTZ variant.

Re: Car discounts provided by the OEMs to their employees

Having worked with 3 OEMs in the past, and in their headquarters, i have a fair bit idea on how such employee discounts are formulated. Common takeaways would be:

a) Mostly all automakers offer discounts to their employees. The percentage generally varies depending on the seniority level, years of service, model / variant, stock situation and what not.

b) Employees from group companies also receive these discounts a lot of times. The percentage may vary depending on how active the HR policies are and how the negotiations have been done.

c) OEMs with captive finance companies generally offer interest subvention as well. A very common practice, i would say.

d) Marginal players like Nissan, VW etc. offer much better deals to their employees to liquidate their unsold inventory. There is a concept of 'stock quality' under which you monitor your inventory ageing. Anything over 6 months old (from the date of production) or from a previous production year, needs a lot of effort to liquidate. In such cases, these automakers create the so called 'employee schemes' and offer the ageing inventory at mouth watering prices.

e) A lot of OEMs keep these employee schemes open for their key vendors as well. Many-a-times, large vendors are also given a target (of say 20 cars) to liquidate these cars to their employees

f) Since the vehicle booking and delivery is handled through the dealers only, they also contribute to these schemes by letting go a percentage of their margin. A lot of times, such cars are not calculated in their monthly / quarterly targets.

g) The corporate sales teams of OEMs also benefit from such discounts. They are the ones who generally strike bigger deals. A classic example would be the Gujarat based diamond merchant who gifted some 1000+ cars to its employees.

Re: Car discounts provided by the OEMs to their employees

I know of Ford employees getting a regular list of all used, un-registered cars, test mules, company owned/leased vehicles, etc., with substantial discounts to purchase for themselves. They might be abused but also well maintained at a Ford service center as it is paid in full by the company!

Re: Car discounts provided by the OEMs to their employees

Working in the auto industry & getting massive discounts = some guys have all the luck . Must say, some of those deals are terrific. Maruti's discount + that dealer margin they mention should equate to 15 - 17%, but Hyundai & Royal Enfield are at another level with up to 25%. Wow.

But this is common across multiple sectors. I bought a flagship Samsung phone 2 years back with the help of a BHPian who works in Samsung at a significantly lower price than what was offered elsewhere. Similarly have picked up a couple of watches from a friend who works in Rado at around 45% off the market price. So employees do get benefits everywhere I believe.

Re: Car discounts provided by the OEMs to their employees

Some OEM's also extend discounts to their suppliers. The mouth watering discounts are usually on old stock and will be at a particular dealer. The most recent deals were on the Nissan line up and it made the Kicks super value for money.

I had secured an additional 15k (over and above the dealer discounts) for my Figo as part of a supplier benefit. Last year we got 10k off on dad's WRV through a similar supplier discount over and above the 50k the dealer was already providing.

Ford also has a 'friends & family' scheme where you can get some additional discount if you know anyone who works at Ford.

I did not know Hyundai offers upto 25% off !! That's a really good deal.

Re: Car discounts provided by the OEMs to their employees

Volkswagen and Skoda India provides flat 10% discount on ex-showroom price to their employees. Audi provides flat 15% of the ex-showroom too(Excluding ongoing dealer offer). Also people in blood relation with the employee can avail this benefit.
