Re: Hyundai Elantra now gets BS6 diesel trims; Prices to be announced post lockdown

I am really keen to understand from Hyundai, what exactly defines a D-segment sedan from their perspective. If you are giving an Elantra the Diesel engine meant for the Verna, what are you trying to achieve exactly ? This has to be among the most lame engine choices ever. 112 BHP in a 24 lac car ? This is the Altis Diesel story all over again.

If this is accompanied by a 3L rupeee price price correction, we are all for it. Otherwise, well, it’s just an exercise is keeping the marketing people from sitting idle. Man, even the insipid diesel Civic is more powerful.

Hyundai has made the 1.5 diesel available as well in BS 6. Has the same engine as the verna BS6.

The Elantra petrol was BS6 compliant at launch in October last year. This sounds as if it was updated recently.

Come on Hyundai! Put in that amazing 2.0l diesel from the Tucson, and watch the Elantra steal customers from Skoda & Honda! Don't give us the same diesel engine that you will also put in the next generation Hyundai i20.

This could be a hit in the cut price executive taxi segment vacated by the Toyota Corolla D4D - that car had only 90 HP and used the same engine from the Etios! Most 3-Star hotels which could not afford luxury German hotel taxis used to go for Corollas purchased at deep discounts direct from Toyota - a barebones version with only a 2 DIN Music system and an AC. This Elantra could actually be an upgrade for them, with 115HP instead of 90! But the segment is very price sensitive so Hyundai would have to offer this version around the 12 lakh ex-showroom price point.

re: Hyundai Elantra gets 1.5L BS6 diesel engine!

Hyundai is now in Suzuki situation. 1.5L mill is now available from Venue all the way till Elantra. Once new gen i20 is launched, it too is expected to come with same diesel engine. Suzuki did same with DDiS.

Not sure why but the Elantra doesn’t get the 2.0L Diesel in any of the markets it’s sold in. I find that strange.

On the other hand, atleast put in the (D4FD) 1.7CRDI. That thing puts out 140hp and 340Nm of torque. This would make Elantra a good proposition for those buying in this segment.

re: Hyundai Elantra gets 1.5L BS6 diesel engine!

It's sad to see that manufacturers are shying away from diesel and plonking the same engine in cars belonging to completely different segments, also shows lack of commitment. It's not that these big conglomerate don't have the BS6 tech for bigger engines, they just don't want to go adventurous. They should at least offer a deserving engine for the class of the car. There are a lot of enthusiasts out there who still prefer big torquey engines over their petrol counterparts. I just can't put my money on a 2 million rupee car with a 113 BHP diesel (let's not even think of Toyota here, I'm glad that 1.4 Corolla died now), thankfully I picked a Rapid DSG before the BS6 saga, I'm sure it will keep me happy for coming years until I put my hands on some exciting hybrid or ev genre. It's also disheartening to see VAG going all petrol only. Hope the sanity kicks in and they bring back the lovely 2L diesels.

P.S. Hyundai if you are listening, Elantra deserves the lovely 2L from Tuscon

Re: Hyundai Elantra gets 1.5L BS6 diesel engine!

Even the first gen Elantra in India had the same 1.6 diesel as the Verna, this is not a new exercise to Hyundai

Re: Hyundai Elantra gets 1.5L BS6 diesel engine!

A 1.5L engine in a sedan costing well over 20 lakh rupees And just 250 Nm torque. A VW Vento offered that torque a decade ago. Back of the envelope calculations show a power-to-weight ratio of merely 84 BHP / ton (guesstimating kerb weight @ 1350 kg). A humble Ciaz has a superior rating.

What the heck is happening to the D-segment sedan? First the under-powered Corolla 1.4D, then the under-powered Civic, recently VW / Skoda discontinued the 2.0 diesel and now this blasphemy!

If you own an Octavia / Jetta 2.0 TDI, go get it remapped and then on the open road. No one else has it as good today!

This right here is the reason why the D1 segment has lost favour with buyers. The cars simply no longer offer value. One one hand, we have genuinely capable and exciting products like the Harrier, Compass, Hexa and the old but still game XUV500. Manufacturers are innovating, trying new things to make their mark. In the sedan space, well, it seems product managers want to get fired.

Re: Hyundai Elantra gets 1.5L BS6 diesel engine!

Is this because the 2.0L diesel is not BS6 ready? I think they will launch 2.0L variant once it is BS6 compliant .
