Volvo has announced that it has recalled over 7,00,000 cars produced globally between November 2018 and March 2020 due to a problem with the automatic emergency brake system.

The automatic emergency brake (AEB) system in the affected cars may not always engage, which could increase the risk of collision and injury. Volvo will be updating the Active Safety Domain Master (ASDM) software free of charge as a remedy. The affected cars include the XC40, XC60 and XC90 SUVs, S60 and S90 sedans, V60 and V60 Cross Country, V90 and V90 Cross Country estates.

Owners of recalled vehicles will be notified by Volvo from May 1, 2020. Volvo Cars has not yet announced a recall for its cars in India.

Volvo Car India has issued a recall for 1,891 units in India owing to a suspected issue in the automatic emergency braking. The affected models are XC40, XC60, XC90, V90 Cross Country and the S90 sedan.

The cars affected by this are MY19 and MY20 models. Cars with automatic emergency braking system have sensors which can detect obstructions and motorists ahead of the car and a special software can identify pedestrians and cyclists separately and deploy the brakes independently before the driver of the car, in order to avoid collision. Now the problem arising is that under certain temperature conditions, the AEB can detect the objects and will warn the driver of an impending collision but is failing to deploy the brakes automatically.

What could be the replacement costs per car for Volvo ? This I guess would be penalized against the OEM supplier. Volvo, true to its tradition of safe cars, has not shied away from this recall.

The modern day sensors in cars and aircrafts has become such a critical component that any malfunction or failure can have catastrophic consequences as we've seen in the case of grounding Boeing 737 Max fleet.

It's just a software update, so the costs should be very minimal.
