Not something that car manufactures can't retool their factories for. In fact while these sorts of ventilators might not be as effective or efficient as compared to some of the top tier products out there but they are still something and much better than nothing.

One should forget about what other people are doing and focus on what one as a individual can do to combat this situation .

Mahindra went ahead with two pronged approach:
  • Mahindra along with two large PSUs is working with an existing high spec ventilator manufacturer to design, simplify, and scale up capacity.
  • M&M hopes to ready the prototype within three days for approval. Once approved, the design will be made available to all other manufacturers.
  • Mahindra is also working on an automated version of the Bag Valve Mask ventilator (commonly known as Ambu bag). It may cost around Rs 7500.

It looks like the prototype is ready! If you ask me, at least the effort should be appreciated. As they say, something is better than nothing (in the not-so-unlikely event of the country needing a lot of these).

This is what Dyson has come out with.

Frankly, a lame effort by Mahindra, putting linear actuators to pump the balloon. Next will be what - an Air compressor

Re: Covid-19: Mahindra Group to start manufacturing ventilators, offer their resorts for patient car

I am still skeptical about this approach of car companies. I will trust a ventilator only of it is made by real tech companies.

(will you trust a ventilator made my Maruti or Mahindra? FYI its controlled by electronic part or ECU )

Re: Covid-19: Mahindra Group to start manufacturing ventilators, offer their resorts for patient car

Guys, The ambu bag is a life saver. In small government hospitals and medical colleges where there is lack of ventilators or there are more patients than available ventilators then it is used to maintain oxygenation. There are a lot of complications that can arise out of improper use of ambu-bags but it is anyday better than having no ventilation support. Is it ideal? No. Do we want to use it? No. Do we need it? Yes.

Let us appreciate the effort people are putting in to fight this pandemic.

It would be a great combination if the the auto majors with a high production capacity, flexible manufacturing systems an a knack for scaling up tie up with the Biotech/Biomedical Research departments at premier institutes such as the IITs and IIScs. I am pretty confident that together they can come up with frugal and repeatable designs for ventilators.

Maruti just announced partnership with a ventilator company to help them scale up and via financial help where required. I believe this is the right approach. Let specialists do their jobs

Mahindra's in-house ventilator enters testing phase

According to Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra, the company has started testing its ventilator before it is sent for approvals.

A video shared by Dr. Goenka, shows a working model of the ventilator. While the packaging is yet to be done it looks way less crude than the first prototype that was revealed last week.

https://twitter.com/GoenkaPk/status/1244584784321368066

The machine has a motorised pressuring operation and the air pumping rate can be controlled with the help of a speed control switch. A potentiometer controls the rpm of the motor. It can be adjusted using a rotary knob. The machine can provide 0-30 breathes per minute. It also has two settings to control the volume of air being pumped and an emergency stop button.

The ventilator has an additional handheld device for the patient with an emergency stop switch and a doctor's call button.

Mahindra is also looking for a name for its affordable respiratory device.

Sir, the fact is when the hospitals get filled with infected patients, you will not even get a choice of hospital forget choice of equipment.

Irrespective of marketing strategy, these companies products could definitely act as lifesaver to many.

My cousin who works at one of Italy's hospital says, many old patients are simple ignored and not attended simple due to shortage of equipment. Hopefully we don't get into that stage.

These devices should not be called ventilators , these are mechanized ambu bags.
