Next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series may debut later in 2020

ACI reports that the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series will most likely debut later this year

Quote:
The Toyota Land Cruiser has been around in its current iteration (J200 series) ever since its debuted back in 2007. Hence, the Japanese carmaker has been working on its replacement for some time now. As per reports, this replacement will come in the form of the next-gen, 300 series model, which will most likely make its international debut in August 2020.

In terms of design, the new Land Cruiser will feature refreshed styling, though it won’t stray too far from the iconic Land Cruiser shape. Toyota is also expected to equip the SUV with a new ladder-frame chassis, which should open up some additional cabin space for rear-seat occupants, when compared to the current model.

Another big change for the Land Cruiser will be the replacement of the trademark petrol V8 with a hybrid powertrain. Toyota, in all probability, will offer the SUV with a 3.5-litre, V6 petrol-hybrid engine from the Lexus LS 500h luxury sedan. In the LS 500h, the powertrain produces a combined 359hp and 350Nm or torque. In the new Land Cruiser, the engine will likely come paired to a 10-speed automatic gearbox with permanent four-wheel drive. There is no news regarding Toyota’s plans to upgrade the 4.5-litre, V8 turbo-diesel engine, but we expect the company to offer a diesel unit on the next-gen Land Cruiser for some markets.

Closer to home, it is worth noting that Toyota has stopped offering the current-gen Land Cruiser in India but the petrol powered Lexus LX is still available for the time being.
ACI uses this source but it’s in Japanese (I guess) - anyone having the time and resources to translate it would reveal more information. I guess it will be close to ₹2 crore+ if and when launched in India

This looks more like a Nissan Armada/Patrol. Nevertheless, looks really good for an SUV. I would love to see them come up with a new V8 or a modern V6 that can return respectable fuel efficiency. The current V8 they run in the US is unmatched on reliability, but feels a little underpowered and less efficient for the age.

Whoa, that looks real badass. A rare new Toyota design that most people will like and an important one too. After all, this is Toyota's flagship car, but one that lost its charm due to Toyota dragging it for way too long. The 200-Series has been on sale for 13 years now.

This has better up the ante as the landscape has changed. All the Germans now offer multiple king-size SUV options (wasn't the case in 2007). While those who need a Land Cruiser will buy only a Land Cruiser (e.g. UN), the alternatives are plentiful in the profitable urban segment.

Re: Next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series may debut later in 2020

Such renderers are doing rounds for few years now. I don't think apart from the drivetrain anyone knows how the new one is going to look like. One thing appears to be sure, there will not be a new 8 Cylinder Diesel. Most likely, we should see a V6 with hybrid, like the one on the RX. But, it's very hard to say with Toyota. LC carries such a heritage of the go-anywhere vehicle. This article mentions CVT transmission, don't know how far will it be successful for the intended off-road usage.
I expect something totally different from what's being shown here.

It's been a similar life cycle for most of the LC Series. Guess regardless of the Range Rovers, X5s, Discoveries, etc, There is always takers for the LCs.

Next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series may debut later in 2020-landcruiser-300-first-spy.jpg

The first Spy picture of the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series has been snapped in Japan. The vehicle, a heavily camouflaged left hand drive sample, was spotted on a highway.

The Landcruiser 300 is set to Debut in April 2021. Toyota has indicated that the existing V8 engines will be replaced by turbo charged V6 powerplants for both Petrol and Diesel models. Hybrid technology will also be added to the choice of powerplants after the model has debuted.

The Landcruiser 300 will be based on Toyota's new TNGA-F platform. This platform will also be the base for the next generation Prado that will debut in 2022 as well as the North American market Toyota Tundra and Tecoma pick up trucks. It will also be the platform on which the next generation Hilux will be developed.

Re: Next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series may debut later in 2020

Look like the new 3.3L turbo-diesel Toyota is developing is not a V6 but a 4 cylinder turbo diesel. From a V8 the Land Crusier will move to a 4-cylinder! I don’t know how this will bode with customers.

Quote:
The power unit will be equipped with a V-type 6-cylinder 3.5L gasoline turbo and a 4-cylinder 3.3L diesel turbo instead of the current V-type 8-cylinder 4.6L gasoline NA engine. The transmission will be 6AT and the drive system will be full-time 4WD.

Re: Next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series may debut later in 2020

I would take the suggestion that the diesel will be a 4 cylinder unit with a pinch of salt.

I doubt Toyota would not be cognizant of the fact that such a move would have a negative impact amongst their loyal followers. I would place my bets on the diesel being a 6 cylinder unit.

Two of their biggest markets are the Middle East and Australia and a move to a 4 cylinder unit would see sales affected in both these markets for very different reasons.

The Landcruiser and broadly speaking, all body on frame SUV's are generally losing market share to less capable monocoque SUV's and Toyota can't afford to step their game down.

Already having indicated that the 300 will grow marginally in dimensions, it is expected that any new engine must offer increased power and Torque outputs as compared to the existing V8. Additionally, one of the hallmarks of Landcruiser engines is their ability to easily do 250 000km with just routine servicing. By using a 4 cylinder turbo to produce outputs greater than the current V8, one of the compromises would be to reduce the trouble-free life span of the engine and I DO NOT SEE Toyota doing that.

I feel that they might have a 4 cylinder diesel unit as an engine option on the base / utilitarian models but it will not be the only diesel on offer.

The Australian website also suggests that the next Prado will be a mild evolution of the current design. This is also interesting and I would take it too with a pinch of salt.

So far, all reports have stated that the Prado redesign will be radical. I would go with that. Toyota has very little leeway with a radical redesign for the halo 300 model. The Prado on the other hand is perfect for them to try out a completely different approach in aesthetics. It also competes mostly with the aforementioned softer SUV's that are dominating driveways these days. The Prado would have to offer more than just the pedigree of the Landcruiser name in an increasing competitive market segment. They won't do away with the ladder on frame mechanics, so where they can be adventurous is the design. I believe we will see a radically different Prado.

Re: Next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series may debut later in 2020

Next Gen Land Cruiser: Land Cruiser 300 Series.

- Current line up is rumored to be discontinued on March 30th

- The new car ditches V8 engines, relying on six-cylinder gas engines and even a 3.3-liter six-cylinder diesel.

- One of these V6s is expected to be a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter, while another is expected to be a hybrid version of that engine.

Quote:
that's three sixes, one a diesel that could make up quite a big chunk of all sales, keeping in mind the Land Cruiser has been a much bigger deal overseas in the past decade than in North America. And diesel is still the way to roll in many countries that need Land Cruisers in order to cruise the land.
Quote:
The 300 Series is expected to stay roughly the same size as the outgoing model because Toyota has smaller SUVs below it.

Re: Next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series may debut later in 2020

Wow! This is indeed a breakthrough. Toyota have been very secretive about this one and there have hardly been any real pics coming through!

I can't wait to see the final product. The Landcruiser is a phenomenal product with a pedigree and reputation that very few can match!

I guess in the coming weeks we can expect to see more revealing pics and further information.

Fascinating to read that the Start button will have fingerprint recognition technology that will enable saving all preferred settings for the driver.
