Re: Next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series may debut later in 2020

The design looks absolutely regal and I am happy to see them retain physical dials. But will 6 ratios enough? Since they stopped the nice V8 due to all the environmentalism going around, why not make it more efficient by mating a 7 or 8 speed gearbox?

The reason is why fix something that ain’t broken, it has already proven it’s reliability since it will be the same gearbox used currently. Also Toyota doesn’t have any 7 or 8 speed torque converters, they have 8 or 10 step CVTs like in the Lexus LS500h or LC500. A CVT would be the last thing anyone would want in a Land Crusier!

The 10-speed experience could be a mega-miser, its progress punctuated by a road-train-like constant swapping of cogs – or, the changes will be so smooth it’ll just feel like a CVT (without the wide-open-throttle drone). https://www.whichcar.com.au/features...uto-geek-speak

No, they already use 8 speed on the Lexus variant for LC - LX570.

In all probability, we are going to see a V6 Petrol in the beginning. They may offer hybrid as an option. For some markets like Australia, they can even continue with V8 if we go by the recent comments from Toyota Australia. But these V8s will be offered only where there are not many Environmental challenges.

For market like ours, they may offer V6 with hybrid as standard. The outgoing one was priced around 1,50 ex-showroom when they stopped selling. I am expecting new one to costs around 1,65-1,80 Cr.

Pretty much irrelevant for most folks despite interests. State governments with zero GST and customs will be the target audiences besides the politicians and HNI/ Actors, as with the past generation.

The 1GR is still there!! ??
I thought a NA version of the new 3.5l V6 would be the base engine.
The 1GR is no doubt a reliable honest engine. Guess they kept it to keep the base price low specifically for the GCC market and to keep the racer-boys happy, maybe with even a manual in the base variant.

The mainstay engine of the next generation.
Expected a NA version, but guess that role has been filled by the old 1GR 4.0l V6.
Twin turbo and also hybrid versions expected.

The engine option that had the most vague rumours floating around.
From a rebored 3.3l version of the 2.8 GD engine.
To a brand new 3.3l V6 diesel.
To even a return to inline-6 with the help of Mazda. (Though Toyota-Mazda will surely work together for various projects, using a JV tech engine for Toyota's flagship would have been blasphemous. Though I really wish it got an inline-6 instead of a V6)

A 3.3l V6 diesel makes sense. As Toyota could use it for more varied applications.
Landcruiser Prado, Fortuner, Hilux, maybe the USDM trucks or even the new Hiace.
Whereas a V8 or inline-6 diesel would have had limited applications. Can't wait for the half crore next gen Fortuner to have a V6

The only chance of the Landcruiser 300 to get a V8 maybe through a special edition with the under development 4.0l V8 of Lexus, in select markets like the GCC nations.

Rumours abound, but most likely the 300 series won't come with the V8 diesel. The 6 cylinder diesel would come to the Australian market. The V8 diesel will continue to be sold in the LC70 since Australia has lax norms.

IMO, it would be the diesel that would come to India.
Though with more hybrid push, Toyota could use their flagship as a hybrid flag bearer.

The diesel will be indeed the 3.3l straight six turbo diesel that is being developed by MAZDA for the next gen. Mazda6 and CX-50.

Absolutely droolworthy renders IMHO. One does not associate such styling with the Landcruiser usually and thats what makes it so appealing ! I hope this is close the actual final product !

Re: Next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series may debut later in 2020

I will take both of the above with a pinch of salt. The later one looks like a spruced highlander and the one above is too similar to existing with some changes to head and tail lamps. Most likely both are artist’s impressions based on the leaks.

Looking for something different from Toyota after 12 years. Am sure they will do better.
