The trustworthy family car thread - share your experience

Hey guys,

I was recently writing a long term ownership review of my Dzire in which I had mentioned our previous "family car" the maruti 1000. Now this made me think that a car when remains with a family for a long time creates emotional value for the same. Hence I decided that there needs to be a thread in which BHPian's can share their memories about their family cars which served them for a long time.

Our Maruti 1000
The 1000, it was the most expensive car launched by maruti at that time and it had a long waiting list. My dad purchased the car for 3.5 Lakhs(IIRC) in 1994 in dark blue colour when I was born, it was his first car. The car created a kind of different status for us among our friends and relatives, it was one of the few cars in that price bracket which were equipped with A/c in those days.It was equipped with a 970cc 4 cylinder carburetor engine developing 45BHP. My dad had driven it down all the way from west bengal since he was able to get it early from there compared to ahmedabad. The car was his most prized possesion, when I think of it he was so attached to it that we had the car for 15 years. Wouldn't have sold it even after that but the body and chassis had started giving way which created a safety issue, plus the mileage was what an Accord V6 might give today.

In those 15 years the car was driven for4 Lakh Kms in which the engine was overhauled thrice and the car colour was changed from dark blue to white. The car strangely only broke down in places where help is readily available for example the crankshaft broke in 2002 right in the parking lot of dads office where conveyance is easily available. The car was with us for every situation and never did it give up. In its last days when the engine had again become weak and the connecting rod used to make noise when the car went above 40 we had decided we would not drive it much. But one day there was an emergency, mom was not well and had to be rushed to the hospital. Dad drove the car like mad that day with headlights on(it was morning time) and hazard lights flashing. I remember having many close calls and the speedo meter reading nearly 120 Kms the connecting rod made so much noise that I was afraid it might break but it didn't, it kept on going. The day it finally broke down was its last day, the day of the Dzire's delivery and what failed was not the engine but the brakes(again failed where help(Dzire) is readily available.)

In the end I would say that if it was not for the car I might not have been on Team BHP. It was the main reason for my interest in cars since I used to visit the garage with my dad when the engine work used to be done. I have no regret in saying that I literally cried the day when the car was sold.

Would like everyone to share their experiences of their trustworthy family cars and the fond memories that are attached with them.

I can see your connect with the M-1000 in this post.
Same would be the case with me but the car would be a Fiat 1100 Delight. The car was with us for about 15 years. As it was bought used, the engine was overhauled immediately and all pistons, rods, crankshaft etc. were replaced. The engine was made new. Then later, we, as a family traveled to a lot of places in this car and the engine would never give us any problems. However, some other issues kept on cropping now & then like battery charge failing again and again, issues with low ground clearance, etc. but rarely it broke down on road leaving us stranded. I guess once when we were going to Patna from Ranchi and a CV joint or a ball joint gave up. Had to get a mechanic from the closest city.

But due to these problems cropping up at regular intervals, I learnt a lot about cars. Accompanying my father to garage only helped this cause and I developed great interest in cars during this phase only. I would watch the mechanics working in my car and other cars in the garage too and tried to grasp as much as I can. Later, I could easily carry out many DIY jobs in the car like carb cleaning, some electrical works, tuning and much more.

We sold this car as there was not much use after we got our new Zen and we could not see it rusting away due to no use. We kept both cars for about 2 years but finally sold it away, though for a pittance. But I am sure that I would not have learnt about cars if the Zen was our first car as it really never breaks down! All it requires is routine service. That's good in a sense but frankly speaking, if it would have been my first car, I would not have known as much as whatever I do now. Apart from that, there are so many great memories attached with our 1100D. BTW, I learnt driving on this car when I was 11!

Regards,
Saket

The new cars are totally different from the cars of those days. Now everything is computerised like MPFI or MJD engines which doesn't let the owners learn anything new or do a DIY on their cars. The cars now are what some may call over protective.

The "I sold my car/bike" thread

Hello Bhpians,

I am sure everyone around here has sold their car/bike sometime in the past. So I thought we all could share our experiences on the forum.

Primary reason behind starting this thread would be to understand the general trend people follow while upgrading their cars/bikes.

Other reasons would be to understand the emotional connect people have with their cars/bikes.

Lets share our experiences in the following format:
1. Make/Model/Variant:
2. What you upgraded to:
3. Reason for selling:
4. Overall experience:

Let me be the first one to start

1. Make/Model/Variant: RE Thunderbird TBTS
2. What you upgraded to: Nothing, no time to ride the bike. Only drive my car to work these days.
3. Reason for selling: Did not ride much and I was not doing justice to my bike, got a good deal too.
4. Overall experience: I still miss my thunderbird. Had some really wonderful rides. Selling the bike made me a little sad, but I guess it was good for my bike. The new owner would ride it and maintain it regularly

1. Make/Model/Variant: Maruti Suzuki Alto Lx
2. What you upgraded to: Maruti Suzuki Ritz Vxi
3. Reason for selling: Alto was 80,000 kms old and I desperately needed more room and comfort
4. Overall experience: It was a very practical decision. Alto had no power steering, no power windows and was very less on space for a 6 footer like me.

Note: Mods, could not find a similar thread. Please merge this thread if something similar exists.

Re: The "I sold my car/bike" thread

I recently sold my Minni with a very heavy heart. I am already missing her two much. Hope the New owner takes good care of her.

1. Make/Model/Variant: Hindustan Contessa 1.8gl with 2.4l G1 Heart Transplant.
2. What you upgraded to: W124 1998 E220
3. Reason for selling: Wife saw her like as a piece of metal ruining her house front view.
4. Overall experience:Was very happy with her but after getting the engine change she had become less reliable.
5. Would you Buy same model again : definatley ( will someone lend me a parking space).
