Hyundai begins feasibility study for fuel-cell cars in India

The announcement comes right after the South Korean auto manufacturer has revealed Strategy 2025 roadmap in its bid for the transition into smart mobility solution provider from just a vehicle manufacturer.
Quote:
New Delhi: Hyundai has announced the commencement of feasibility study for fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) in India.

According to the strategy, Hyundai's goal is to electrify most new models by 2030 in key markets like South Korea, US, China, and Europe, while emerging markets like India and Brazil will follow suit by 2035.

Hyundai currently has FCEVs like Nexo and ix35 in its global lineup. In India, the company has already launched the Kona Electric. Besides that, it is also planning to launch the Ioniq here.

Hyundai said that it will address vehicle electrification by first targeting younger demographics and enterprise customers with affordable BEVs to achieve economies of scale.

The answer to that feasibility study is very simple. Its not feasible on multiple levels. The pure EVs are going to take off in a big way in the coming few years and nobody will even remember FCV passenger vehicles existed for a brief period of time.

Well said! And I totally agree. Fuel-cell / hydrogen cars cannot happen without the wholehearted support of the government. Now, India has infrastructure issues for potable water & lavatories, so investing big-time in a supposed future tech with a BIG question mark won't exactly be on the government's list of priorities. Plus, they have more or less made it clear that they will support electric cars in whatever way they can.

Fuel cell hasn't even taken off in the USA, despite strong efforts,

Viable FCEV might come after electric cars. If seen in comparison a FC+BUFF can mitigate the need of batteries and hydrogen has to be taken out much more efficiently only then will they be viable.
