Vehicles registered in Ladakh will get ‘LA’ plates, not JK anymore

Vehicles registered in Ladakh will get ‘LA’ plates, not JK anymore-ladakhlicenseplate.jpg

The Government of India has officially updated a section of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 that specifies the registration designation carried by vehicles of every state and union territory in the country. The license plate of every road-legal vehicle registered in the newly formed union territory of Ladakh will begin with ‘LA’.

Officially in effect from November 25, 2019, this law will help to further demarcate cars, scooters and other vehicles from those registered in what was previously the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The recent Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which came into effect on October 31, 2019, saw the state become two separate Union Territories: J&K and Ladakh.

It seems that cars registered in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will continue to carry their original 'JK' designation.

Well, this move will definitely make it easier for the taxi mafia to know whom to target
(Related thread: https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/stree...axi-mafia.html (Car convoy attacked in Ladakh by taxi mafia!) )

Lighter vein comments aside, is there a change in the registration charges, etc. Or will it continue to remain to be the same?

Re: Vehicles registered in Ladakh will get ‘LA’ plates, not JK anymore

So, How exactly they implement this? Does it apply to the new vehicles or all the existing vehicle's registration plates will be changed?

How did they do it in Telangana & Andhra Pradesh?

It applies to the new vehicles only, no changes to the existing ones.

In Andhra & Telangana, they did it as said above.

And recently in Andhra Pradesh all the new registrations throughout the state were being given AP 39, no separate registrations for different RTOs, it's AP 39 throughout the state.

I think it's good move by government. Both union territories have their own identity and to differentiate both change in RTO name was bound to happen. But govt. should ensure the safety of tourists who drove down to this magnificent place in their own vehicles from those so called Taxi mafia. Last year or before that these taxi mafia created nuisance for the tourists who forced them to leave their cars and hire taxis.

Common registration for whole state with single RTO. Don't you think it will be over burden on single RTO. Also how the vehicle will be identified from which district it has been registered. Am I missing something?

Saw this pic posted by Cyrus Dhabhar. Somehow had missed this thread, so the LA plate really caught my attention.

Looks like registrations have started -

Yes a few months back. I have already seen a couple of LA registered vehicles in NCR. During a recent trip to Uttrakhand, I saw a LA registered Fortuner as well.

BHPians, I had seen LA registered XUV300 way back in November 2020 on the way to Sonmarg. This isn’t a new implementation.

Since Ladakh has two districts presently, the RTOs have been divided as:-
1) LA01 - Leh.
2) LA02 - Kargil.
