Re: The Kia Sonet Compact SUV, now unveiled

Seeing this below picture of instrument cluster, its looks like there is combination of digital and analog meters.

Left of mid screen looks like speedometer. And there is an analog meter (red circle) in the corner. May be its rev-counter or fuel / temperature gauge.

Overall this dashboard doesn't look very premium. Lets see how top variant dash looks like once clear pictures are available.

The plastic plate most probably will be removed and then a touch-screen will be added, IMO they have not attached it yet so that not too many features get leaked before launch. I am also saying this because if you take the case of the picture showing the 2-DIN system it is clearly integrated into the panel.

For me, more than the aesthetics of the interiors and it's quality, what's worrying is the auto car report that indicates a 1.5 torque converter diesel would be in the offing for Sonet too. That's not a great news for existing Diesel AT Seltos owners(me included). Even if it's in a lower state of tune, the bottom line is one can get the same engine at may be 60% of Seltos' price. It just brings back the memories of Altis engine being plonked in two segment lower Etios years back.

Hence the pricing and feature list game would be really interesting to watch out for and how Kia manages the Sonet pricing in a way that it doesn't overlap much with the pricing of base variants of Seltos. For people whom space isn't a big criterion, top end Sonet with all the bells and whistles would appeal more than the base variant of Seltos.

May be it's time for Kia to dial in Maruti to find out how to maneuver this tricky path .

There’ll be a number of engine and gearbox options on offer – a 1.2-litre petrol-manual; a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol with manual and dual-clutch auto options; and a 1.5-litre diesel with manual and torque-convertor automatic options. In fact, there’ll also be a clutchless manual option (iMT) with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine – this technology has debuted on the Sonet’s rival and platform-sibling, the Hyundai Venue recently

Just the Corolla and the Etios (D), the buyers for Sonet and Seltos would be different. Cross-shopping would happen but since the design, features and size of a top end Sonet and a base Seltos would be very different, the buyer set would be distinct!

Remember the old or even the new Creta and the Venue shared the diesel engines? And yet, both the models have been popular among its buyer base. Even when the Venue was absent, we had the i20 1.4D having the same engine as the base Creta. Yet the Creta E and E+ variants were very popular for someone wanting more space or a bigger car..

Hyundai has done that with the Venue and Creta combo, overlap the pricing to egg the buyer to switch between the models or upgrade. KIA will just use the same strategy. And as they did with the Seltos and Creta twins, covered every possible combination of features and driving characteristics, I believe the Sonet and Venue will become similar twins!

1. Somehow has an ignis vibe to it

2. Those look like 185 section tyres, must be lower variant

3. The greenhouse is pretty large, that is one way to mask the fact that the space inside is at a premium, and passengers don't feel claustrophobic with a lot of light coming in.

The positioning of the side turn indicators on front fenders is very awkward to say the least. It does not look good at all. Look so much like an afterthought. Agreed that this would be on the lower trims while higher ones mostly will get ORVM mounted blinkers - it doesn't mean the lower trims must look odd.

The Seltos HTE trim sports the same indicator though it is placed slightly more towards the door. IMO, it still doesn't look odd on the Sonet. However in this age where the indicators are placed on the OVRM, this could have been made standard across variants.

Kia Sonet spotted during ad shoot

The Kia Sonet has been partially revealed in an image that has been shared on social media. The image appears to have been captured during an ad shoot.

The Sonet gets Kia's signature tiger nose grille. The car seen in this image appears to be the GT Line trim. It has a dual-tone exterior with silver roof rails, black ORVMs and dual-tone alloy wheels.

Reports suggest that the Sonet GT Line could come in GTX and GTX Plus variants. The GT Line will be offered with the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that will be paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

In addition to the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, the Sonet will get a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Besides the dual-clutch automatic, the sub-4 meter SUV will get Kia's 6-speed iMT which has an automated clutch.

Thanks to the Team-BHP fan (he prefers to remain anonymous) who sent this image in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this page!

Rumour: Kia Sonet bookings to open on August 7

The Kia Sonet will make its global debut on August 7, 2020. Reports suggest that Kia dealerships will also start accepting bookings for the new sub-4 meter SUV on the same day.

The Kia Sonet Compact SUV, now unveiled-2020kiasonetsketch_0.jpg

The Kia Sonet shares its platform with the Hyundai Venue. It will also get the same powertrain options as the Venue. It is said that the top-spec GT Line trim will be offered with the 1.0-litre, turbo petrol engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The SUV will also get 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines. Kia will also debut the 6-speed iMT transmission featuring an automated clutch in the Sonet.

In terms of features, higher variants will be offered with a touchscreen infotainment head-unit, digital instrument cluster and automatic climate control. Spy images suggest that the base variant might get a 2-DIN infotainment system and manual air-conditioning.

Reports suggest that the Kia Sonet will be launched in the Indian market sometime in September 2020.

This I believe is at their manufacturing facility - main reception area inside the plant. They previously had the Seltos, Carnival and their EV on display.

A close up of what Tushark posted.

Definitely looks small and quite tame in this image compared to their adds(vampires) and teasers.

Hope it will have better character in the real world.
