Would the same be applicable to the new G with the new underpinnings? They are far more complex in nature with no more solid axles etc. Also would the new bodyline survive like you mentioned above?

The G looks like the earlier generations for a reason. I'm personally glad they haven't 'modernized' the design, like the new Land Rover Discovery.

Mercedes-Benz has launched a new entry-level variant of the G-Class called the G 350d. It is priced at Rs. 1.5 crore (ex-showroom, India).



The G 350d is positioned below the AMG G63. The second-generation model retains its boxy proportions. It features circular LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, flared wheel arches and LED tail lights. On the inside, the SUV comes with a digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel. Other features include electrically adjustable front seats, 3-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, cruise control, automatic headlights and rain sensing wipers.



The G 350d is powered by a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder diesel engine that produces 282 BHP @ 3,400-4,600 rpm and 600 Nm @ 1,200-3,200 rpm. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission. It has locking differentials and a low-range gearbox.

The G 350d comes equipped with a host of safety aides including 8 airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, ESC, traction control and hill-start assist.

1.5 Crores and it comes with plastic seats, that's a terrible choice. This is a good offering overall , stand out from the crowd and its economical too. I'm going to suggest this to someone evaluating the S class.

Mercedes totally messed up the pricing. This should be priced similar to the GLS at about 1 Cr. to make any sense. At this price, if one has to consider this then he will anyway want to stretch go to the G63.

Exactly. I think this is more than what the market would like to pay, even if its a niche vehicle.

And if I were in the market for the same, I'd rather buy the full fledged AMG.

However, I may be wrong as there are a lot of buyers for diesel luxury cars, price no bar.

I am happy that this practical G is available in India for people who would like to buy it w/o the hassles of importing etc.

It would be a head [LC-200] vs heart [G] decision though.

I sincerely hope, there is a media drive and Team-BHP gets an invitation.

Inspite of Lexus overpricing the LX450d at 2.32 crore, it still found few takers. This price was expected for the G350d. The G63 is whole crore more almost. And when are CBUs priced well in our country anyway? The first lot of cars is sold out already says my friend who owns a Benz dealership. Also the initial units will be pretty loaded just like the AMG, exception being the engine, something like a launch Edition. This might be 1.5 crore now but imagine a sweet used deal on a G350d say 3 years down the line for 50 lakh maybe less.

And truth be told I would be in line to buy a used example for that kind of pricing. Ive grown up surrounded by G-Wagens in the UAE and have used a G63 for a few days. The character and respect it commands on the road is unparalleled.

And its indestructible just like ajmat said. Well I'm just happy they launched it here. Id pick this over a GLS anyday.

At this price now i have to decide which one to go for. Should i go for the LC which i can keep for the rest of my life or should i go for the now practical G? Ah decisions decisions. One can fly under the radar without any fuss post debadging while the other i can pass off as a modified Bolero!
I hope the mods get their hands on both and help make a decision!

I think this is a good move as you get a practical G for those who can afford it.
Any idea if the solid axles has been maintained in the front/rear or changed go IFS/IRS ?

Evo India just came out with this sweet video of this year's classic retro SUVs head to head in the deserts of India!

I think it's great that classically styled, no compromises, hardcore, offroad vehicles are making a comeback after the last decade of neutered, bland crossovers. It's going to get even better when the Defender launches next year (although it did lose some of its original roots in that unibody construction)
