I tend to disagree here. Fiat was a marketing disaster, the products were excellent. They entered at the right time and products had a clear differentiator. Perhaps it was lack of a disciplined approach that brought them down. Customers were going hoarse telling them to better the service experience, spares were never stocked up (as per an owner). Polo might be selling, but a newly styled product could do much better numbers as the design feels like it has 'really' been around!

VW products have a certain finesse to them which FIAT (India) lack. Punto was an already failing platform in its sunset phase. Whereas something like a Polo is still continuing to sell more cars per month than what number of Puntos/ Lineas Fiat managed in six months. Great move, about time we get some goodies!

The first batch of VRs in Mumbai was 27.xx ex showroom - the later increase was not too much, the Polo GTI after discounts was in cowboy bargaining territory here - 21 lacs on-road. At these prices, both offered great value.

At 40 lacs, the first set of "bakras" will buy. The rest of us have to wait for a year for the real pricing to begin. I hope they import 1000+ and suffer with a prediction overload - discounts will then make it <30 lac on road!

I think we're all forgetting that Skoda India is running VW India now. So there will be no more of the typical VW India typical fiascos.

Going by Skoda India's business decisons on automotive products launched in India over the last few years which should now apply to VW India any new product will be launched at a price point where it can sell reasonably well.

So if the Golf GTI is to be launched in India it will be done at a price point where customers will buy

The Golf GTI will not be launched and some other product from the VW stable will take its place - maybe even the Polo GTI again.

UTTER IDIOCY which was the hallmark of VW India will henceforth witness a slight decline.

Regrettably so for us enthusiasts who now eagerly await the next VW blunder to go bargain hunting.

Speculated 40 lakhs price tag may look quite high, but the way Octavia RS was received probably made the VAG folks think that our market is finally ready. And it’s a proper spacious car.

Same here! And a GTI at 40 lakhs is a sporty and sensible choice compared to a regular A3 or A-Class.

From a pure performance perspective, Golf GTI at 40 lakhs paired with APR performance parts for ~10 lakhs will yield you a hatch that will put SUVs and Sedans from double the price point to shame. Obviously this appeals only to a niche customer base.

A commendable move by VW India.

Given the backdrop of back to back failure of premium hatchbacks such as FIAT 500, Volkswagen Beetle, etc., VW coming back with another expensive small car for India, is noteworthy.

I sincerely hope that the Golf cracks the shell and carves out another story of success for VW in India.

The new golf comes looks classic inside and out. But the basic design kept as it is. Inside lot of physical buttons are replaced with touch sensitive buttons.

The engine options are 90 PS 1.0L TSI, 110 PS 1.0L TSI, 130 PS 1.5L TSI (with ACT) and 150 PS 1.5L TSI (with ACT) will be the conventional petrol engine options initially. The diesel engines have been developed for the all-new compact Volkswagen from scratch. They’re 115 PS 2.0L TDI and 150 PS 2.0L TDI units. The TGI engine will be a 1.5L unit.

The latest Golf will be the first Volkswagen to be sold with no less than five hybrid drives, two eTSI and two eHybrid. This is the brand’s first model with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. The engines available with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology will be the 110 PS, 130 PS and 150 PS TSI units. The maximum system output of the two plug-in hybrid systems will be 204 PS and 245 PS respectively. Both the plug-in hybrid variants will use a new 13 kWh Lithium-ion battery.

The EA888 turbocharged 2.0-liter offered in the current Mk VII Golf GTI will be retained. The mill will have two outputs – 255 horsepower (190 kilowatts) and 295 hp (219 kW). The more potent mill is reserved for the GTI TCR, which will replace the GTI Performance trim. Gearbox choices stay the same – either a six-speed manual or seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic.

I love the Golf GTi. In fact I love all VW Golfs.

I sincerely wish such a super hot hatch will come into India and give the enthusiasts one more option.

I also do hope that it is priced in a fair and equitable manner.

They would also do well to reintroduce the Polo GTi as a more economical option.

the new Golf GTI will be offered in two states of tune: a base model with around 245 HP and the more powerful version with around 290 HP. In both cases, power will go to the front wheels exclusively and customers will get to choose between a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
