Going against the D-Segment with 158 HP? A Fortuner somewhere must be listening to the advertisement and screaming out loud, "Am I a joke to you Mahindra? Bring it on!"

It makes absolutely no sense to take the Fortuner head-on with the new Scorpio (and Mahindra knows this, of course), but there is a huge white space out there for a rugged, ladder frame, proper 4wd (yes, low range is what I'm talking about) SUV with reasonable creature comforts (unlike the Thar or Gurkha) and costing a realistic amount of money (unlike the Fortuner). Essentially the void left behind by previous generation of Safari (including Storm) and 4wd Scorpio. THAT is the market being targeted by Mahindra with the Scorpio. I won't be surprised if its pricing overlaps with that of XUV 7OO to a large extent as the customer base for both these will be quite different. I am quite excited by what I've seen of the new Scorpio so far. Wishing Mahindra all the best!!

And meanwhile, Anand Mahindra tweets on the launch date rl:

I am guessing, we should see the new Scorpio in flesh in the coming weeks.

Mod Note: Guys, please stop discussions on how / if it will be placed above the XUV700 or comparisons to the Fortuner. Firstly, it doesn't seem to make sense. Second, it's derailing the thread. No posts on this, until (if & when) we have some concrete information.

Thanks for the support & understanding :thumbs up

Which means a value for money C segment gaadi taking the fight to D segment = which is what usually Mahindra does ! They build a product that competes with higher segment at a lower price point.

Yep, Just the features and not the price. As per an earlier interview with Mr Velu, XUV is offering features from premium German cars and for Scorpio its going to be GM , Ford, Toyota etc.

Scorpio is the reason why Toyota has not wiped off Mahindra from our market, else Qualis would have opened the door for Toyota to dominate the UV market.

Heard from M&M sources that the Current gen Scorpio is going to continue to be on sale while the Z101 is going to be launched under a different name (with or without scorpio suffix is still a big mystery)

After seeing it in person in Manali, I can vouch that it looks more modern and bigger. The interiors have been upgraded from the current Scorpio and if this is under 20L for the top variant (Manual or Automatic), I might book it.
It feels nice to see home-grown brands like Tata and Mahindra giving great products one after the other.

The Big Daddy of SUVs continues to be spotted testing

At least in Uttar Pradesh, nearly all the Scorpios are picked up by the small time 'netas', windows plastered with oversized stickers of their political party and designation. In a nutshell, such scorpio drivers are by default out there to overspeed and aggressively make way on the roads. A negative image in our mindsets.

Perhaps with this new model, they wish to position and price it such where even a doctor would like to be seen driving one. This will cover for the exit of the Alturas G4, and open up a whole new space in the existing Scorpio's domain to develop and launch a new model right next to the Bolero.

1.) The Z101 does not look nearly as big as it would have been if it was going to be positioned against the Fortuner.

2.) Members who are in the hopes that the Z101 will take the place (supposedly) left behind by the Alturas G4 have clearly never experienced the Alturas. Going by how the 7OO feels, I don't see Mahindra attaining the sheer finesse which the Alturas exudes anytime soon.

3.) The Alturas is bigger than the Fortuner. Until recently, it was more powerful and faster than the Fortuner too and still has wayyy better interiors and is 10-15L cheaper. Despite all of this, it rarely sold in the 3 digits (forget about competing with the Fortuner which sells in thousands every month).

4.) Where I live, the Scorpio has (and always will be) been considered a vehicle purchased by someone who could not afford a Fortuner. Its place in the social hierarchy is much much lower than the Fortuner. These perceptions matter a lot at the end of the day.

Do you guys think that Mahindra would ever commit the blunder of positioning a smaller, slower, less-premium vehicle with way less brand recall against the Fortuner in terms of pricing?

NO!

IMHO, this discussion (Z101 being anywhere near the Fortuner) is just plain silly and defies any conventional logic/thinking.

AFAIK Mahindra has not mentioned Scorpio name in any of the teaser or tweet, all they say is the Big Daddy of SUVs!

Probably this one gets a new name as is placed in the D segment against Fortuner and Scorpio is continued as such. This might also explain its testing along with Endeavour (as a benchmark).

Indeed. And Mahindra might be copying Land Rover, as they re-invented the Defender into a very different car than it was before.

However I think they would be using the Scorpio, as prefix or suffix nomatter the price point they launch Z101 in as the guy used the tagline of Scorpio: Nothing else will do!

This advertisement mentions "Nothing else will do" which is Scorpio trademark.
