West Bengal: Issues with paying Road Tax online

My '14 Grand i10's road tax permit is due this month.
I was trying to pay the road-tax beforehand using the parivahan.gov.in site.

However, upon entering the car details, I am getting an error :

"Alert!Vehicle registration status found active in more than one RTO/ State, Please contact respective RTO for de-activation of vehicle registration as per your requirement."

Is there any way to resolve it, without having to physically enter the RTO premises?

To Mods : I had posted the above as a comment on Aug'18 in a Road Tax thread, but that thread is dead and there is no post after that. Hence attaching the ORIGINAL POST (Annual Road Tax) . Please move this to an active appropriate thread, if deemed necessary.

First of all, I am sorry for being slightly OT here.

This particular message appears normally during transfer of record from one RTO to another, such as during an ownership transfer. Have you purchased the vehicle in per-owned way? If yes, the ownership details have been transferred and updated correctly in RTO database? This is just a head up on the possible reason for the error, I am sorry I might not be of any further help to you on this as I am not from WB.

No. It's a first hand purchase from the Hyundai dealer itself. This is what is confusing me.

The 2 locations were my car is allegedly registered is Beltala RTO -PVD Kolkata and ARTO- Behala Office.

The Beltala RTO is correct, as my tax token is from there only.

I cannot find any information or contact number of the Behala ARTO for de-listing my vehicle anywhere on the internet. Moreover, West Bengal, being at loggerheads with technology or BJP is one of the very few states which has not digitized any of its RTO processes. Bribery is open and rampant.

Few of my friends in kolkata tried to pay the road tax online too, but they never succeeded. At the end they had to go to the RTO and pay physically and few of them opted for agents.

If you need any contact number of an agent in Beltala do let me know, i will PM you the contact.

I think you won't be able to sort this mess without going to the RTO physically(or through some agents).

AFAIK Beltala PVD is for Kolkata jurisdiction and Behala ARTO is for South 24 Pgs - so it looks very odd that the same car got registered with two district RTOs.

I had renewed the road tax of one of my cars through the central government Paivahan website last June and was quite a smooth process. I was a bit sceptical at first to do the payment as I was unaware whether that process had been launched for West Bengal or not but finally I went ahead and successfully did it. There was only one option to renew for 5 years though.

I contacted the Beltala RTO through the helpline number, and kindof suprisingly, someone picked up, and has guided me to meet an officer on 2nd floor.

Even though, I'm planning to get this issue sorted on my own for a change. I would appreciate if you share a contact of the agent. They can always come in handy.

What I heard is it is a fairly simple process, you will just need to make an application. It normally takes about a month but you can contact the officer in charge to speed up the process.

However, do let us know about your experience.

Hope I am not hijacking this thread.

I also tried for renewal of road tax of my personal vehicle for next 5 years, however the option is showing for commercial vehicle only. Otherwise steps are simple. Can you please suggest?

Thanks

Hi,

Apologies for replying late.

I noticed that it is saying pay commercial vehicles tax on the website but I can't remember if it used to display that earlier or not and it might have been limited to only yellow number plate vehicles now.

When I had done the online road tax payment, I went to the Parivahan website and under the online services tab, selected vehicle-related service. I was asked to provide the registration number and subsequently a mobile number for the OTP. After successfully logging in using the OTP, I was able to provide the additional details required like chassis number, registration date, insurance details, etc and had to pay around 40 rupees extra in lieu of service charges.

I had thought of posting a step-by-procedure with screenshots while I was doing the payment earlier but I got too busy with arrangements for my international travel and couldn't make it.

Regards,
Debrup.

Re: West Bengal: Issues with paying Road Tax online

What does your rc book say as to which number of owner you are? If a duplicate record exists in two RTOs that is the usual reason.

The process to clear an entry (NOC from one RTO to another) is straightforward and took within a day at least for me.

Re: West Bengal: Issues with paying Road Tax online

I recently paid road tax on 5th March for my grand i10 for which expiry was on 10th March. The process is more or less simple, although not as simple as shopping online. They don't allow payment by credit card.
There was only one confusion - The tooltip that pop up when you hover the mouse over "Pay your Tax" says "Pay commercial Vehicles Monthly/Quarterly/Yearly MV tax online using internet banking, debit card".

I called up mPariVahan helpesk @ 0120 2459168. They were also not sure whether tax for private cars are allowed online.
However I proceeded and and paid the Tax online. It saved me the time to visit RTO.
However I am skeptical whether the same is valid. I have taken print out of the receipt and laminated it.

I also received a copy of challan for the payment.

It will be some relief if some one can clear my doubt whether it is valid.
Thanks in advance !!

Yes this should be valid. Nowadays vehicle dealers also submit the road taxes online thru Parivahan website and provide a similar receipt.

If anyone deposits road tax at concerned RTO in person, they also issue similar receipt. Earlier Kolkata RTO used to issue road tax copy on pre-printed format.

Re: West Bengal: Issues with paying Road Tax online

I believe the problem faced by the OP is because I think some RTO office in Kolkata had split into two in around 2013 or 2014 (Kasba PVD??) and hence the records were transferred to a new location. This is why the parivahan site showed multiple RTO error.

Kolkata BHPians may confirm the above.

Saket

That is actually the case.

If there's no problem with split RTOs etc, I have helped 2-3 people in my office to pay road tax online via parivahan site.
