I am closely watching this car as a potential buy. Hope they don't get too adventurous with the design as they have in the past If they come up with a design which looks contemporary enough and load the car with features which work well without glitches, they will have a winner. No need to be really innovative in mundane things like a door handle or a parking brake (if they do 're-invent' them, better be really good compared to the tried and tested designs). Also no need to be quirky just to stand out from the crowd.

My wish list for the upcoming XUV500. 7speed auto, better NVH in low speeds, interiors similar to the Alturas and better suspension. I hope they don't load it up with sensors/tech which we are not yet ready for.

I see you are an owner of the XUV AT. Is there anything extra you are expecting out of the 7th cog? As far as I experienced the sixth gear in the current AT is already pretty tall. So do you prefer a taller 7th gear or more closer ratios?

Better suspension is must.

I currently own a 2019 W7 MT, I am still hasn't got used to the low speed ride. I felt the issue with it more so as I graduated to it from a Nissan Terrano.

A sneak peek of the 2nd-Gen XUV5OO's digital instrument panel. We can see a partial, blurry image of how the layout is going to be like.

Since Mahindra has decided to go for a full digital instrument panel, I hope they use a crisp/high resolution display, keep the fonts classy and do full justice to the screen by giving different layout options, specially a layout with a large map/navigation view at the centre, which most people find really convenient.
I hope I'm not expecting a bit too much here.

Other than sharing this vehicle with Ford India, I wonder how much of an influence FoMoCo has had in this vehicle's development.
Mahindra could use partner Ford's help when it comes to digital dash because they have some pretty nice ones. Here's the Mustang and Explorer's digital instrument cluster for reference:

Well, why bother when they have in-house help

Ssangyong, especially the Korando (which I naively thought would be the basis for the next gen XUV500, a la XUV300-Tivoli) has a full digital, configurable instrument cluster.
Weirdly, resembling the Explorer instrument cluster shown above.

as for my experience, i usually cruise at 90-110 and the car keeps juggling between 5th & 6th gear due to the rpm which gets quite annoying. Maybe shorter GR upto 120 and keep the 7th for 120kmph & above.

Re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

Today while returning from my morning Ride met an XUV5OO test mule, Parked on the NICE Rd ( between Tumkur Rd and Magadi Rd) and driver finishing his snacks break.
Parked my bike. Asked him if I can take a look. He agreed, but requested for no pics. I obliged.

Had a good chat with him and here are my observations.

1) Electric Parking Brake
2) Interiors are great, colour palette used is more towards white and makes the interior look airy.
3) Nice chunky Steering Wheel
4) The console resembles the elongated design of Seltos.

The Pop out Handles is funky and functional but looks flimsy. I hope they are testing it well.
The 3rd row continues to be strict for short folks.
The fake wood finish looks funny with the whitish and dark shade.

The car was on its way to MRV(Mahindra Research Valley, Chennai) from Mumbai for Suspension Tune Up.

The Wheels were 235/60 R18 from MRF and sported a new 5 spoke alloys.

As per the driver it's expected to get LED headlights.

The rear Dickey door sported lots of creases and might have a busy look.

As per the driver.. it uses a 6 Speed TC AT ( I would guess it's the same Aisin) and he has been informed of an April 2021 Launch.

Hope this helps those seeking more insight to 2nd Gen XUV5OO. Anything else feel free to ask and would try to respond from what I observed.

Thanks for the insights I have few questions:
  1. Does second row have slide and recline feature?
  2. Does the AT have either paddle-shifters or conventional tiptronic manual override (current AT has small buttons on the stick!)
  3. Are the seats more upright/van-like or is it like in other crossovers?
  4. Is the floor high like the current SUV
  5. Is the floor flat near the doors or is the door sill slightly raised (as on many other crossovers. It is flat on SUVs like the Fortuner)
  6. Is the boot-space with the last seat 'up' better than the current car?
  7. Lastly, are there any glaring 'quirks'?

BTW, does anyone else also feel that the taillamp is very similar to what they have on the current car?

My responses are in line with your queries.

  2. Does the AT has either paddle-shifters or conventional tiptronic type manual override (current AT has small buttons on the stick!) No paddle shifters, regular tiptronic (like the new Thar)
  3. Are the seats more upright/van-like or is it like in other crossovers? Just like any other cross over
  4. Is the floor high like the current SUV.. It appeared to be similar
  5. Is the floor flat near the doors or the door sill is slightly raised (as on many other crossovers. It is flat on SUVs like the Fortuner). It's slightly raised
  6. Is the boot-space with the last seat 'up' better than the current car? Very much similar, the boot was loaded with carton boxes couldn't check in detail.
  7. Lastly, are there any glaring 'quirks'? Oh yes.. The fake wood color.. It's a mix of white and black.

BTW, does anyone else also feel that the taillamp is very similar to what they have on the current car?

Re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

It would be interesting to see how XUV500 2021 will be priced as compared to upcoming Tata Gravitas, MG Hector Diesel automatic and Jeep Compass facelift 2021.

If reports are to be believed (Link), the current gen XUV500 is being tested with more powerful 2.2 Litre 4-Cylinder mHawk diesel engine and same engine will be used in XUV500 2021 facelift also. [Although the image used in article is old image when XUV500 2018 facelift was being tested (Source)]

Current top spec XUV500 W11(O) FWD Automatic is priced at 19.3 Lacs Ex-Showroom (Delhi). Even if we expect minor price bump due to high tuned engine then it might be price around 19.5 to 19.8 Lacs Ex-Showroom.

Since XUV500 2021 expected to equipped with EPB, Mercedes like connected screens, Level 1 autonomous driving tech (such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist), AWD/4WD, it will command significant premium over current gen (at least 1.5-2 lacs). The petrol variant can be priced lower to keep pricing in check.

Pricing comparison with competitors (Ex-Showroom Delhi):
XUV500 (current Gen): 13.57 to 19.30 Lacs
Tata Harrier - 13.84 to 20 Lacs
Tata Gravitas - 15 to 21 Lacs (expected)
Jeep Compass - 16.49 to 27.60 Lacs for current gen (expect slight increase with facelift 2021) - Only SUV offering 4x4
MG Hector - 12.83 to 17.90 (expect 1-1.25 lacs premium for Diesel automatic once launched)
MG Hector Plus - 15.69 to 18.69 Lacs (expect 1-1.25 lacs premium for Diesel automatic once launched)

We had earlier reported that the new XUV500 and Scorpio may be sold alongside their older models.

Whether this update is cosmetic, mechanical or both is yet to be seen. The image shows the side and rear quarter profile of the test mule which is very much similar to the current model on sale. It gets the same headlight and taillight units as visible while pillars are blacked-out too. Even the alloy wheel designs are the same as the current model. In our opinion, the new model is staring at an update on its mechanical side.

This means that the 2.2-litre 4-cylinder mHawk diesel engine will see an upgrade and will be offered in a more powerful state of tune. Currently, it returns an output of 153 bhp and 360 Nm of peak torque.

It is unlikely to get a new 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol engine which is reserved for the new-gen model but you never know what Mahindra might think. Transmission options will continue to remain same in the form of either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.

Reconfiguring the powertrain might also require reworking the SUV’s on road dynamics like the chassis, suspension and brakes. This would also require the company to test the car on roads rigorously. The SUV segment has been finding a huge number of takers in the past few years with Mahindra XUV500 being a prominent one of those.
