re: Scoop: Honda Civic spotted testing in India! Edit: Launched @ 17.69 lakhs

Reasonably nice looks of a sporty nature and like a big hatchback. Unsure how that will go down with 'executive' buyers in India. Also that curving rear roofline will make rear seat ingress/egress a major headache especially for taller and/or older people.

Did not think the day would come that the punchline for a Honda Civic petrol would be fuel efficiency :-(

The side indicators seem to be extremely vulnerable to breaking. That part of the fender is prone to minor scratches/ hits. ORVM mounted ones would have been ideal.

If at all I am to buy a sedan, this would be it. Car comes wit decent kit and looks great. W.r.to performance, only the Octavia beats the civic, rest are comparable.Only fly in the ointment to me is -Pricing, knowing Honda this won't come cheap! I would not be surprised if this ends up costing as much(or even more) as the Octavia.

re: Scoop: Honda Civic spotted testing in India! Edit: Launched @ 17.69 lakhs

The new Civic looks HOT, especially on Indian roads. This is a rare Honda in which the chrome grille doesn't look garish. I absolutely love the styling.

But, the engines are a major disappointment. At the least, they should've given us the 2.0 NA instead of the 1.8, and the diesel with an A/T.

The irony is, this is the same company which once upon a time, launched the City with a 118 bhp engine while the others were stuck at 90-100 bhp. Disappointing, to say the least.

That said, I agree with PrideRed above. Only the Octavia beats it in performance, and though it's a fantastic car, it comes with its own share of worries. The Corolla and Elantra are as good, or worse.

They better price it well, though I'm not too optimistic. They better undercut the Octavia by a decent margin, else it's not going anywhere.

Some other random thoughts -
- Internationally the next-gen Civic is only a year or two away. Honda has never been one to sell outdated models in India. I think it the next-gen Civic will come to India within a year of its international launch, which means this car is only going to be on sale for two years or so.

- The next gen City and Corolla are scheduled for a 2020 launch. Is the Civic gonna get hammered from both ends, much like the previous gen did back in 2009?

- A note to Honda - A Civic 1.5 Turbo at 23-24 lakhs ex-showroom would've been a success. Why? Because premium customers are willing to pay more to get more.

re: Scoop: Honda Civic spotted testing in India! Edit: Launched @ 17.69 lakhs

If the Civic is priced even a spitting distance within the Octavia, it will die a slow death. 120 bhp doesn't befit the CR-V or the Civic. I bet the Civic will be close to ₹ 35 L otr and that would be would be a pity as it won't sell, just like the new hybrid Accord which was priced prohibitively and is hardly seen on the roads: I haven't seen one. Octavia rules this segment: it's aspirational, has the show and go and compared to Toyota and Honda and is priced rather sensibly given the kit. Times have changed choices are many and Germans are here.

That actually might not be the case! When the Ecosport was launched, lot of the customer bought 1.5L Petrol over the 1.0L Ecoboost, simply because they felt 1.0L engine are for entry level hatchback. With 1.5L Turbo Honda won't win battle with the TSi. Hence Honda is taking a safe route here.

The ultimate irony will be if Skoda phases out the 1.8 TSI and replaces it with the 1.5 or 1.4! Maybe Honda has built that into their strategy :-)

The EcoSport operates in a relatively price-conscious segment, which isn't the case with the Civic. Also, the 1.5 Turbo can easily take on the 1.8 TSI. IMO Honda should've brought both engines, just like the Octavia that gets 2 petrol options.

Another disappointment from Honda. I was waiting to change my Verna for a sub 20 L Sedan and I thought Civic might be good.

Diesel and no AT !

The pricing almost I can sense would be ridiculous.

They surely are smoking something exotic as someone said previously. What a joke.

I for one am more upset with the lack of the manual version on the petrol. The misery of having the 1.8 (as opposed to the 2.0) is compounded by the lack of a manual gearbox.

No idea what Honda's strategy is here!?! They could have so easily had a well priced entry variant with the 1.8 manual.

If that's the cluster, here's the start-up sequence:

Looks pretty cool. Can't say the same about the performance figures though.

Couple of observations

1) Theres that awful reset stalk that is also probably used for trip, reset etc.
2. That particular engine is idling around 1500rpm. And its a petrol going by the tachometer markings. I understand the startup rpm is a little high. But 1500rpm?

Cold startup. Temperature gauge isn't even showing one bar even after the needles settle down.
