China-based Great Wall Motors to enter India by 2021-22. EDIT: Quits even before starting

According to a media report, China-based Great Wall Motors is planning to enter the Indian market around 2021-22.

The car maker has reportedly started hiring for its local automotive business. Reports suggest that the company has hired Kaushik Ganguly, who was previously part of the product planning department at Maruti Suzuki.

Great Wall Motors has four brands under its umbrella - Great Wall, Haval, Wey and ORA. In China, Great Wall offers sedans, SUVs and pick-up trucks, while the Haval brand focuses primarily on SUVs. Wey caters to the luxury segment. Earlier this year, Great Wall launched an electric vehicle (EV) brand called ORA. The ORA iQ5 is an electric sedan powered by a 59 BHP electric motor, having a maximum range of 350 km. A compact EV called R1 is planned for 2019.

MG Motors, a subsidiary of the China-based SAIC Motor Corporation will also be launching its first SUV in the Indian market sometime next year. The carmaker has also confirmed an electric SUV for India.

I hope they do not bring in models like the Sail twins and Enjoy - essentially Chinese cars that contributed to Chevrolet's crash.

Great Wall sells quite well in Australia - competes with Holden (GM) in almost every segment.

To me - the term 'Chinese' triggers rather unflattering thoughts about the quality of the final product.

re: China-based Great Wall Motors to enter India by 2021-22. EDIT: Quits even before starting

Their Brand Equity is quite questionable. Only God knows as to whether the buyers will readily accept unknown brands like Great Wall, Haval, Wey and ORA in our market.

We Indians buy international MNC brands with the "Made in China" tags, which are manufactured there due to the lower overheads. A majority of the electronic brands have manufacturing bases in China since the late 1970's and early 1980's, when the Chinese economy opened up and welcomed foreign investment and foreign players. The arrangement has worked coolly for nearly three and a half to four decades. The quality control (QC) that these MNC's maintain conforms to the international standards and these MNC goods have successfully penetrated the toughest developed markets.

But now coming to the ingenious Chinese products, SAIL had a tough time in marketing even an international brand like Chevrolet with the plasticky Chinese cars and has eventually had to wind up. So it's anybody's guess as to how these local Chinese brands will fare here in our markets.

And given the credits of multi-starrers like Dokalam and other Chinese heroic deeds on the territorial front here, there is some suspicion on the mind of every patriotic Indian. In this backdrop, it would be quite interesting to watch these Chinese brands crawl into our markets ! Maybe, our Management Institutes will closely watch this new 2018 Chinese game from the "marketing" side of the story !

I think Chinese success brands success depends on what type of cars they are bringing to Indian market. New, unknown brands find it difficult in automobile industry. I don't think they will be successful with traditional petrol/diesel cars as we already have many options (Indian and foreign) at all price points. If they price them too cheap, people worry about quality and safety.

On the other hand, if they bring in electric vehicles and reasonable prices, I believe they will be very successful. None of the Indian car makers have any EVs in the pipeline and at most some of them are converting existing cars to electric. Foreign brands like Hyundai will bring in EVs but they will cost a lot.

Reports suggest that Great Wall Motors is investing Rs. 7,000-8,000 crore in India. The company will be setting up a manufacturing unit in Gujarat, while its R&D team has already been setup in Bangalore. It was reported that Kaushik Ganguly - a former employee of Maruti Suzuki who was part of the product planning department, had joined Great Wall Motors.

Well, there's news of Great Wall testing the Haval H6 SUV for launch maybe in 2020-21.

The thing is, in the SUV segment , everything is about perception. That's the reason MG piggybacked a British brand-name and hid its Chinese ownership and reaped dividends, the reason Force Motors hasn't tasted success. Perception.

How Great Wall deals with that, will decide it's fate in the Indian market.

re: China-based Great Wall Motors to enter India by 2021-22. EDIT: Quits even before starting

China’s Great Wall forms India unit; may invest Rs 7,000 crore.

China's largest SUV maker, Great Wall Motors, has registered an Indian subsidiary and is planning to invest close to Rs 7,000 crore in the country, even as the market is going through one of its worst slowdowns.

The Indian subsidiary, Haval Motor India with its office in Gurgaon, was registered before October, which means it won’t be eligible for the low corporate tax rate of 15% (17.01% with surcharge) for new manufacturing units in India announced by the government last month. The company, therefore, is considering setting up another corporate entity here under the name of Great Wall, a person in the know told ET.

The company has written to the Prime Minister’s Office, seeking an appointment for its chairman Wei Jianjun with Narendra Modi in the first week of next month, the people said.

A formal announcement of the India plans may come after this meeting, this person said.

The silhouette looks good. However, I see part Mazda CX-9, part Toyota Highlander influence, though they are 7 seaters.

Haval ‘vision2025’ electric SUV concept to be unveiled at Auto Expo.

China-based Great Wall Motors to enter India by 2021-22. EDIT: Quits even before starting-havalvision2025conceptrearyoutubescreenshot.jpg

Quote:
The company says the vision2025 SUV is fitted with a transparent display like from Iron Man’s helmet on the floating display of the dashboard. The concept car has an augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD) system and brings real application of AR technology to the front windscreen to mix navigation, instruments, entertainment and communication with the road and display the entire virtual guide line on the windshield in real time, to ensure the driver keeps his eyes on the road while getting his information.
Quote:
Two of the other features on the vision2025 worth noting are the photoelectric technology replacing conventional mirrors of the car. This helps improve the field of vision 3 times compared to traditional rear-view mirrors, reducing blind spots. Lastly the car comes with a 3D car location function that turns the driver’s mobile into a car-searching equipment to locate the vehicle in a large parking

Chinese are really flooding the market. Ultimately the product will decide their future. If they can give value for money products like Hector and prove their reliability in the long run, it is very good for the consumers. The design of the SUV definitely looks promising.

I had apprehensions when Xiaomi, OP etc started flooding the market. Look where they are now. The mighty Samsung is having to launch models lower down the order at competitive prices to sustain their market. I anticipate the same thing happening in the mobile phone market. The ones who will dethrone Suzuki and Hyundai could very well be our not-so-friendly neighbors and not the Indian origin manufacturers.
