Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Tata Punch production plans:

1. Plans to produce 8,000 Punch cars (or Punches) in October.
2. Intends to manufacture 35,000 to 37,000 cars in total in October, highest in Tata's history
3.Punch's production will necessitate the start of a 3rd shift at the Pune plant, something that has not happened in a decade.
4. Punch will allow the Tata domestic PV business to breakeven.
5. Tata aims for a regular 35,000 sales per month from now onwards.

This means that they are expecting around 6000 to 7000 units per month from the Punch. For this, it really needs to be priced aggressively. They have introduced it with just a single engine option which itself is mediocre at best. Without aggressive pricing, this number does not seem achievable.

Easter egg in GTO’s smile for members to crack says a lot of things before the review goes LIVE.

Hope the car packs a punch and makes way to this thread - cars punch above their weight thread later on

5 to 6k is quite achievable for Punch. This particular Team-BHP thread itself has got ~1.2 million views. It clearly shows the interest this product has generated in the market.

Factors favouring Punch:
1. Tata aggressively marketing Punch as capable SUV
2. Feature loaded
3. 90 degree opening doors, Cruise control and availability of AMT at launch.
4. Flat central tunnel which ensures this can be easy five seater.
5. Traction control - will wait for Team-BHP review
6. Compact and overall good package.

Cons:
1. Mediocre engine - Will wait for Team-BHP review for its drivability.
2. Recent acts from Tata management are not confidence inspiring
3. No proper AT
4. Service centers - Big gamble

There might be any number of reason Tata had decided not to use a diesel in Punch, and a lay and distant observer like I may not be right in suggesting diesel.

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

0-100 timings are bad but this will be primarily used as a city car which can handle bad roads marginally better than the hatchbacks. It may take it's sweet time to reach 100 but whats more important is how refined or comfortable it is at cruising speeds of 100-120. Also the way Tata motors are highlighting it's off road capabilities, it will do well in rural areas as well.

I have always felt Tata comes up with such promising products but are let down by incompetent service centers and QC teams.

That view - visible hood from the inside - will alone add 1000 + monthly sales to the Punch. Many people want that SUV look and this actually looks like a SUV (looking at you Kiger, Kwid and Spresso )

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Hyundai Casper is expected to launch in Jan 22, it will come with a 4 cylinder and probably steal this segment.
Small 3 cylinder NA, with bad performance, in this day is just not acceptable.
Punch can have all the safety rating, but people will not buy it with a sluggish engine. Very disappointed with Tata.
I hope they put a electric power train in it soon, that could br a sucess this car.

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Unsurprisingly there are a lot of comments about the low power of the engine. However, as someone pointed out there are a large number of Tiagos' and Altrozs' being sold with the same engine. Most people seem to want reliability, a strong and safe car and good customer service. Unfortunately, good customer service seems difficult to get consistently from the Tata dealers. The other two i.e. reliability and strong safe car seem to have been delivered.

The Tiago was geared for fuel efficiency. The fifth gear had a ratio of 1:0.75. The second gear also gave lower torque than was required for comfortable driving requiring too many gear changes in the city. Hopefully they had adjusted the gear ratios to provide for more torque in lower gears and more convenience in city driving.

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

I think people are judging and reading too much before having a first hand physical review of the car. The Punch is undergoing a PUNCH NAMA right now by media houses and including our GTO sir.

Tata are always late in joining the party and are deaf ears to customer suggestion or demands. But does that mean we bash them regardless that they are trying to create a new persona , new designs that are competent enough and world class bought safety ratings into us Indians mindset at affordable prices.Which the so called pioneers never achieved.

I am not a Tata fanboy or Bhakt if that be the right word. But there can't be two parameters for different companies.I see people getting Huge Joy by seeing a CEO reply on Twitter but that doesn't mean the cars will run error free .

Customer service is a Hit or Miss for many OEMs but then we live with them trying to adjust .

So let's await the official reviews and price which is a prime factor to be disclosed. And till they enjoy the festive season.

Thanks for sharing teaser (like TML did before launch).

Location looks to be Pune-Mumbai expressway.

And this appears to be one of the most awaited Official reviews from Team-BHP, judging by the number of posts in this thread!

May be not. Hyundai is not going to price the Casper aggressively, given their latest pricing strategy. Tata will play the VFM game. Look at the Venue vs Nexon battle - Of late, Tata has consistently outsold the Hyundai.

First off, Casper won't be launched in India. It was confirmed by Powerdrift that Hyundai has no plans to introduce that car in India. It is smaller than Santro, can't be a competitor of Punch.

Secondly, yes, the engine is not that good in performance in Altroz and Tiago. But you are forgetting that 75% of Altroz sold are 1.2L NA petrol. Tiago also sells 6000+ units per month with the same engine. Overall, 85% of Tata's sales come from the 1.2L petrol engine! Yes, enthusiasts don't like that engine at all. But it's competely opposite in the market. It's a big success in terms of sales. People are already buying the sluggish engine. Maybe what they want is a safe car with decent kit and good mileage figures which Tata offers?

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

This car have potential and I am sure this will pull a lot of the crowd towards the TATA showroom and convert a large number into sales. Considering the fact there will be no more Freestyle or similar kind, this will be a good time and product for TATA. Moreover, people now have high expectations about TATA products and I must say most of their products are keeping up that level too.

Hope this will not be a beta product like Harrier/Kushaq.

Regardless, this looks like a well-executed and capable machine coupled with good looks and the SUV look, which most of the customers prefer. Good job TATA

The only downside as of now shall be the weak engine. Since I had a Tiago in the past, I can confidently say that engine will be good enough but certainly not for someone who looks for performance or 0-100 numbers. It certainly get the job done with a good fuel economy.

The fact is this product can compete with a lot of cars from various segments. Like Espresso, Kwid, Freestyle (non-existent though), Magnite, Kiger, and even Nexon.

If TATA was able to introduce the 1.2 TC Petrol Engine with an auto box or the 1.5 Diesel on the Altroz then it should have shoot up the sales like no other. But with the possibility of falling Nexon sales. But I believe it will be okay and they can give some exclusivity to Nexon by giving a higher tune engine and eliminating the AMT by introducing a proper AT to Nexon.

Whatever it is, Punch seems like a WINNER
