Re: The cleverest & most innovative features you've seen in mainstream cars

Interesting thread.

Though I don't own this car (yet), I find this feature completely mind blowing:

Rolling the AC controls, parking lights, music controls all into one is this 17" giant tablet:

And replacing the analog speedometer along with the MID is this gorgeous screen:

There's also the falcon wing doors which take up the least amount of space while opening or closing and the Autopilot features. You can't talk about innovative features without mentioning Tesla

Re: The cleverest & most innovative features you've seen in mainstream cars

Dear All,

I have a habit of driving with parking and fog lights on irrespective of weather or time.

I have a Grand i10. It has a battery saver feature. It switches off all lights as soon as one switch off the engine and opens the driver door. So, my headlight stalk always stays in parking light on position. I don't have to worry about the battery.

The feature that is already mentioned in this thread earlier for cabin light that it will switch off automatically once you lock the car irrespective of the switch position is also there in my car.

One of the doors is not closed properly and you try to lock the car then the car will lock but the lights will not blink indicating one of the doors is open.

I believe this debuted on the first gen Hyundai Verna.

I find the phone holder in the new Ford Figo and the small cutouts at the back for stowing away the seatbelt buckles to prevent rattling to be quite nifty features indeed.

Chevy Beat had this since it's launch. Very useful feature.

Re: The cleverest & most innovative features you've seen in mainstream cars

Not sure how many of these have been mentioned before.
In the Figo
  • The phone dock - one of the most useful ways to pop a phone up for navigation and music.
  • When using wipers on intermittent setting, increasing the wipe frequency will immediately start with a wipe. Presumably the driver increased the frequency because the windshield was getting more wet. So why wait. Nifty!
  • Something I experienced. At low speeds when I disengage the clutch, the ECU holds the revs for a while anticipating that the clutch will be released soon after a gear change.
  • Anti-stall: The ECU increases the revs by a slight amount when clutch is released without throttle input to prevent the engine from stalling. This 'feature' is really convenient in stop-go traffic.

Re: The cleverest & most innovative features you've seen in mainstream cars

Last year, I was moving homes. While the big stuff was to be taken care by the "packers n movers", me and wife decided to move clothes, personal items and the sundry items by car, using the big suitcases we already had.
So one evening, doing my third trip to the new home, I loaded the boot of my car to the brim, then place my personal laptop bag and closed the boot.
Immediately we hear a long Beep. I think probably the boot isn't closed properly, so I open it and the sound stops. I close it harder this time and again, the beep starts.
It is irritating, the boot of my 'new' car is giving trouble at 8PM. I check if I can drive around, ignoring the beep and once I was sure the boot wouldn't open in the middle of the road, I drove off.
Unloaded the luggage, closed the boot and there isn't any Beep. Kept the luggage at home, came back to the car, again opened the boot, closed it and no beep.
Seemed like a temporary glitch so let it go.

About a month later, I was emptying my laptop bag and the car's second key appears. My wife had put all the keys in that bag.
Ahhhhhaaaa !!
That night, the car was telling me the boot is not locked as I have placed the key in the boot. How nice !
If only the owner was as smart as the machine.

Re: The cleverest & most innovative features you've seen in mainstream cars

Back in when Fiat was seriously considering of making cars for India, I remember the Italian seniors using Alfa Romeo and Fiat Bravo's as their primary cars as they had to frequently travel from Mumbai to Pune. One of my cousin was closely working with them, I had a chance of driving the Fiat Bravo it was a 1.9 Multijet. It had a unique button on the dash "City". Once you click this the steering gets so light that you can operate it using your little finger. Best part is when you are on the highway you can turn it off again. Heard it is a common thing in Fiat cars since last few years, wonder why India did not get anything as such.

I tried searching a lot for the video of it but couldn't find. Here's a click from the official Fiat website from Italy.

It made its debut even before that. I've used it first in the Toyota Qualis. The mode is called "Full" and its a button placed next to "AC" button. Turning it on the front passengers turn into icicles while the people seated in the rear keep their cool.

Now some one else will come and say it debuted even further into the past

The windows on our Elite i20 can be operated even after switching off the power. Once you open the doors, they stop working. It is useful if you forget to roll up the windows or you want to roll them down for ventilation.

Re: The cleverest & most innovative features you've seen in mainstream cars

In the Honda Brio, if you quickly tap the wiper stalk upwards, the wiper swipe is very fast. If you tap the stalk upwards gently (slowly), the wiper will swipe slowly. Helps when you are at a signal and dont want to swipe it so fast that the water splashes on the vehicle/person standing next to your car, but if you are on a highway and want one sudden swipe (e.g. exiting a leaking tunnel on Express way) you can just tap it upwards quickly. This is not similar to Fiat where a single swipe is always at the fastest speed.

One useful feature on the Fiat Linea is that it displays all electrical faults when you start the car. E.g. Currently our cars' tail light and number plate light is gone, so is one of the glow plugs in the engine. It displays all three messages with a beep and one LED in the dash will be on constantly showing there is a fault somewhere.

One of the cleverer feature I find in hatchback cars is the split seats. You can access the boot without opening it, say you want to keep your laptop or your gym bag in tight parking lots. Or if you want to access the spare wheel with luggage on top of it, you can just drop the seats and push it inwards without the need to take it out of the car.

Re: The cleverest & most innovative features you've seen in mainstream cars

My Top 5 features I view as MUST HAVE's for Indian roads.

1) Ventilated Front Seats (especially with perforated leather) - The single most important feature for sweaty, chauffeur driven India. Featured in many Hyundai cars.

2) Ventilated Steering Wheel - Same as above.

3) Magic seats - Made famous by Honda, these fold away seats transform hatchbacks and SUVs into carnivorous loading areas

4) Cornering Headlamps - Very useful when driving outside of the Metro areas and you can see around corners, saving you precious seconds of reaction time.

5) Air purification - Toyota's partnership to launch Sharp's plasma cluster air ionization purification in their cars is admirable. Very hard to place a price on breathing in germ free, particulate free air in the most polluted country in the world.

Re: The cleverest & most innovative features you've seen in mainstream cars

The boot in the linea is opened on struts and hinges placed on the lip.
They do not intrude on interior space.

I just like the cleanliness and yes there are times when I have filled up the boot.
A few manufacturers offer this. (Tata Tigor, Fiat,)

The latest Verna, Yaris do not.

Its a compromise between whether you want a wide opening for the boot (easy to load airport luggage) or intrusion into the boot (avoid the surprise 'oh no, i cant close it because there is no space for the mechanism to go in')

  1. The Smart Entertainment system of Octavia keep playing music/ songs, AC working as it is, and MID still showing information even after turning car off but as soon as you open door to get out, everything fades and message flashes "remember to take your phone along" before turning everything off.
  2. You cannot fold outside rear view mirrors in Octavia if your car speed is above 35 km/h.
  3. Car auto brake when sudden acceleration in reverse.
