Re: Tata Motors, Mahindra top spenders on R&D in 2016-17

Not surprised with Tata & Mahindra topping the charts as their expenditure also includes commercial vehicles, tractors (Mahindra), EV tech etc. And Tata's new cars sure show that the development money has been well spent.

But am disappointed with Maruti. Heck, Hero spends more on its cheap 2-wheelers! But then, Maruti has Suzuki on one hand and Toyota on the other for tech. Whatever apprehensions they had about losing out on future tech are put to rest thanks to the big T.

In fact, Tata also has Jaguar-Land Rover from which it can borrow electric tech. Mahindra though should be more worried. Yeah, I know they bought Reva, but the company isn't exactly at the forefront internationally.

Well, Maruti paid Rs. 2,500 cr as royalty payment to Suzuki. I guess we can call royalty payments as amortized R&D expenses. Anyway, India's contribution to R&D will go up with time once Rs. 4,000 cr Rohtak R&D facility goes online in March 2019

Honda India spending Rs. 550 cr on R&D is an unusually high number for a subsidiary. Where did the money go?

Agree with you on all the points, except that Mahindra has a Formula E team, and they will definitely use the learnings from there to improve their electric tech on the road going EVs.
I'm quite sure that's the same reason all the biggies (Including Jaguar) are joining Formula E

Cheers
