Have a look at Iran numbers. Country with issues with others and victim of sanctions has made 14.2 Lakhs cars in 2017 (Population of 8 Crores) at CAGR 0of 10% between 2001-2017. Impressive.

Let me state the obvious - a proud moment for India and our auto industry. Maruti in 1984, the first wave of foreign manufacturers started assembly in ~1996 and today number four in the world by units. The nay sayers will say, 'oh its only units not value' to which the response is Rome was not built in a day nor is an economy or industry. It goes to show that when we release ourselves from the bureaucracy of the license raj what can be achieved in less than a generation. When I started my working life in the early 1980s with a leading truck manufacturer I could never ever have thought such a day would come for our industry. For folks today it is not possible to conceive how stiffling the business environment was then - not so long ago guys - I still manage without a walking stick. So while a gazillion challenges remain to be solved in India from the inspector raj to our zero traffic discipline let's pause for a while and celebrate our wins. Jai Hind.
