CIAZ is indeed >4m(Dezire is <4m) and with 1.6L MJD the duty would be 27% whereas with 1.5L that would be 24%. That's the reason VW and HONDA downsized their 1.6TDI/iDtec engines to 1.5 to avail the 3% excise benefit.

Edit : If the 1.5 diesel indeed comes and is standard across all variants of CIAZ, I believe we might see the same in S-Cross as well? Or will it be lower variants(affordable) continue to have the DDiS200 and the RS/top end variants powered with the 1.5?

Agree. The Indicas sold around 15K units per month at a time when there was no other small Diesel engines, and Maruti was desperately looking for one. Fiat would have drawn the line at that time.

Now the situation is different. Maruti is atleast able to spread a message that a new 1.5L Diesel engine is under development, and that makes Fiat to desperately try to sell a new 1.5L engine to Maruti. Even if the new Suzuki engine is not under development / not good enough to use in their cars, Maruti can bargain hard.

Why it makes sense for Maruti to look outside for such an engine even when the development by Suzuki is complete / in advanced stages? It may be after considering the royalty to be given to the Japanese Suzuki and profit for Maruti, the Fiat offer may turn out to be a better deal for Maruti.

Now the question: Is a Fiat 1.5L Diesel engine already available? If not, how much time will it take for them to downsize the 1.6 and test it?

re: The Maruti Ciaz Facelift. EDIT: Now launched at ₹ 8.19 lakhs

A reliable source tells me that some new and extensive training is scheduled to begin from 26th of this month. The New Ciaz maybe?? Can't think of any other new launch. I'll get more details by 20th.

Shashi

There's also the fact that they don't seem to be able to make a decent diesel engine. We all know about the Celerio Diesel, which was their idea of a sub 1L passenger car engine

Even Honda has trouble getting the NVH under control in their Earth dreams engine. Getting a diesel engine right takes time and effort and experience. Considering their recent tie-up with Toyota, Suzuki could try to get the 1.4-D4D engine for their cars.

But the one factor in favour of going with Fiat is the extensive experience and training that Suzuki service centres have already put in place for maintaining the Multijet engines. Going with the same series engine will save crores in training, tooling and R&D expenses.

Actually the article states that Fiat is pushing its 1.6 as an 1.5 to replace all existing 1.3 Multijet engines and not just the motor in the Ciaz. The only question is, how far ahead are Suzuki in the development of their indigenous Diesel engine? As most of us know, Diesel engine development requires substantial amount of capital and time,
So if Suzuki has already spent money and time, why would they abandon it now without even launching it? And for Suzuki, India would be still one of the biggest diesel markets, so if they cannot launch it here then they cannot do make sense of the investment anywhere else.

And lastly, Fiat does not produce the 1.6 locally at all. Reportedly, They have already bagged contracts from Tata and Suzuki too on the 2.0 Diesel engines, which is already being used in the Jeep Compass and may be used in the H5X and H7X. And also in the Grand Vitara when it comes here. So for Fiat to produce this 1.6 now it will take a lot of capital and time.

Hence not sure if this whole report is accurate.

re: The Maruti Ciaz Facelift. EDIT: Now launched at ₹ 8.19 lakhs

2018 Maruti Ciaz Facelift To Get SHVS With New Petrol Engine; Launch by August.

Quote:
the 2018 Ciaz (facelift) will get a 1.5-litre petrol engine that will replace the existing 1.4-litre K14B unit. But that’s not all on the engine front. The 1.5-litre petrol engine will also get the SHVS (mild hybrid) tech which would make the Ciaz the first petrol car in Maruti’s portfolio to be equipped with one.
Quote:
the K15B (the 1.5-litre petrol engine that the Ciaz is expected to get) just made its debut on the second-gen Ertiga, it will most likely be the first instance (on the Ciaz facelift) that this engine is hybridised

re: The Maruti Ciaz Facelift. EDIT: Now launched at ₹ 8.19 lakhs

I hope the new Ciaz comes with a more strengthened chassis like they did with the Baleno RS. The RS is more heavier it seems than the regular Baleno. Since the Ciaz will also see a bump in the power output I hope they improve the chassis to accommodate the larger engine thus enhancing the safety of the vehicle. Any idea if it will offer all wheel disc brakes to match the Yaris.

What I've come to know from my sources is that there are some issues with the 1.5D being developed by Suzuki so it's been delayed further. So the new Ciaz may not come with 1.5D as of now or maybe there might not be any diesel variant at launch. It may be launched after few months.

I am reading that same transmission options will be continued ? With a flat sedan market, i feel a good AT option is a must for Maruti to continue to lead this segment. City is selling only because of the Petrol and AT differentiator. While the new Petrol can now compete with Yaris/City, AT is what Maruti needs to convert this segment like that seen with Dzire.

re: The Maruti Ciaz Facelift. EDIT: Now launched at ₹ 8.19 lakhs

Maruti Suzuki is speculated to be in the final phases of testing the Ciaz with the New petrol engine.

New Diesel engine will first arrive in the Ertiga and later in the Ciaz.

Quote:
The new engine is codenamed ‘K15B’ that will be used by Maruti in many other cars across its portfolio. The new four-cylinder 1,462cc engine produces around 104 Bhp and 139 Nm.
Quote:
Reports the new petrol engine is extremely silent and was idling at almost zero noise.
Quote:
The new engine has been caught testing with the current version of the Ciaz. The car on the test can be seen with the Suzuki Solio, which is reportedly testing a new platform, but it will not come to India.

re: The Maruti Ciaz Facelift. EDIT: Now launched at ₹ 8.19 lakhs

Maruti Suzuki's 'face-lift' Ciaz to launch in August, bookings to start in end July. Presumably Suzuki's 1.5l diesel engine is not yet ready and will debut at a later date inline with the emission time-frame.

New 1.5L M15 petrol engine will get the hybrid variant, while the diesel engine will remain with Fiat's 1.3 engine. Interiors are expected to be carried over from the existing car, the exteriors design will get cosmetic changes.

Quote:
Maruti Suzuki had earlier planned to replace the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre diesel engine in the Ciaz with an in-house Suzuki-developed, more powerful 1.5-litre diesel engine. But the company finally decided to stick with the tried and tested Fiat powertrain.

More speculations of the power train (Petrol Variant,

Confirms an August launch.

Quote:
Expect the new petrol engine to have a maximum power of 100 hp and around 144 Nm of torque. 2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz's new petrol engine will be mated to a 6-Speed Manual Gearbox and will also get the optional 6-Speed AT.
