Hyundai Nexo fuel cell-powered SUV showcased in India

Hyundai showcased the Nexo - a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) at the India-Korea Business Summit held in Delhi.

The Nexo FCEV was revealed at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in January. It is set to replace the Tucson FCEV in the global market. The Nexo measures 4,670 mm in overall length, 1,860 mm in width and 1,630 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,790 mm and a 52.2 litre fuel tank.

The crossover has a large V-shaped grille in the front. Like the Kona, it features a stacked headlamp and LED DRL setup with the main headlight placed in a separate, triangular pod below the V-shaped LED DRLs. The Nexo sports a coupe-like roofline and has retractable door handles, while the wheel arches are lined by plastic cladding. In the rear, the car features a raked windshield with an integrated spoiler on top and triangular tail lights.

The Hyundai Nexo is equipped with a 95 kW hydrogen fuel cell and a 40 kW battery pack that power an electric motor producing 161 BHP and 395 Nm of torque. Hyundai claims that the Nexo can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 9.2 seconds, while its top speed is 179 km/h. The Nexo has an estimated range of 800 km (New European Driving Cycle) / 609 km (Korean certificate basis).

The Nexo comes loaded with driver assistance systems and semi-autonomous features like lane-following assist, highway-driving assist, remote park-assist and blind spot monitoring system among others. In addition to the Nexo, Hyundai also showcased the Ioniq at the event.

According to the company, the Nexo is scheduled to arrive in Europe by mid-2018. The car is part of the company’s eco-strategy to introduce at least 15 new low-emission vehicles by 2020.

A welcome step from Hyundai, indicating firm intent to keep its hat in the ring of sustainable/renewable energy applications. I hope TML & M&M can follow suit, since the technology is still nascent (the actual FC patents being closely held by a just a couple of firms world-wide) and firms with deep pockets can certainly produce prototype examples.

Currently hydrogen filling station networks are relatively non-existent, but it is just a matter of time. In the interim hydrogen extraction from bio-waste/alcohol is one area where work is going on. From there to portable hydrogen generators maybe a huge leap of faith at present. And till fossil-fuel availability (and its related economics of diminishing returns!) reaches its last gasp, the do-or-die pressure - on industry & research - to change to alternative energy will not come.

Best wishes to Hyundai and anyone else who considers the FCV route. Hydrogen could be an interesting option if there's a concern regarding the increased load, due to an influx of EVs, on our barely-sufficient power grid.

The obvious advantage of the FCV over plug-in EVs is difficult to ignore: 10 minutes at a "hydrogen pump" against the hours spent charging from a wall-outlet, and a superior range to boot. And a greater emission cut compared to pure EVs, if the hydrogen is obtained from a renewable source.

There are many though, including Elon Musk, who have criticised FCVs like the Toyota Mirai and the Honda Clarity for lugging along the fuel-cell for generating electricity on-board rather than plugging into the grid for charging. Just a decade ago, Hydrogen cars were called "one of the least efficient, most expensive ways to reduce greenhouse gases", and one wonders how much progress has been made since. The fuel cells are still quite expensive, but it could turn out to be the ideal solution for our country, provided the economics are sorted out briskly. Perhaps if we manage to manufacture the fuel-cells ourselves?

Building the required Hydrogen infrastructure, while a challenge, could be a whole new job-generating industry, and an indigenous one too, with the added incentive of stemming the flow of our forex reserves. Also, the hydrogen-production could be achieved in an efficient, non-polluting way when the biohydrogen option eventually gets past the laboratory stage. Long way to go for all that though, sadly.

Nonetheless, intriguing times lie ahead, especially the next 2-3 decades. Wish I was recently born..
