Looks lovely, agile and a head-turner on the road - no doubt about that. It would be an optical feast in Arizona blue, Metallic Black, Electric Blue or Berry Red and with fiercer alloys.

Spotted one on Pune-Mum express way. Size is very much comparable to XUV. The Fortuner is clearly a size or two bigger. Front appears busy just like XUV. Rear is where the Harrier looks upmarket. From distance the Harrier appeared to have better fit and finish. At the end of the day I would say Harriers fit and finish Vs XUV's AT/AWD/Features/extra power. At this point, things look pretty even with price being the deciding factor.

There isn't a vacuum assisted bonnet? That was very helpful in Safari and would be surprised if its omitted in Harrier!

Nope, no gas struts. I guess the Harrier is built to a cost. Which is why you'll find things like that, realised so when I saw they're sticking to 16" & 17" tyres (cost less to replace), non-machine cut alloys, high NVH within cabin is because of lack of insulating material, single exhaust tailpipe, etc

Notice that the variant distribution is such that the top end (high margin) model will get numerous good features whereas even the XT variant misses out on many necessary features.

Anyway, my only grouse is the lack of AT & that TATA haven't mentioned anywhere that it is BS6 ready, making it harder to compare it with XUV.

It certainly looks like that and given our market this might be a good strategy too. I dont think anybody except the owners noticed such niceties. But then again if the Harrier is a hit and they get some room in the pricing department it might make a comeback at some point in time.

I noticed as my friends' 2012 Duster has a gas strut. Even Aria/Hexa has 2 gas struts for the bonnet. It's really good to have, otherwise one feels lazy opening the bonnet & tends to ignore checking the engine bay and thereby the oil & fluid levels.

Someone I know in Fiat group installed a pair of them for as little as ~ ₹2000/- for his Linea's bonnet. Should cost a fraction of that at manufacturer levels.

re: Tata H5X Concept @ Auto Expo 2018. Named Tata Harrier! EDIT: Launched @ Rs. 12.69 lakhs

Checked it out in the flesh, at Cyberhub.

Initial impressions:

The vehicle is "quite" long in nature. Though not as tall (as the XUV), but it will / should have road presence. The currently clad tires look superb and add muscle to the car. The orange color looks just eye-catching (and the crowd was going berserk) and pleasing. Makes you want to have it. A thought came to my mind: How will this look in India's favorite vehicle color. White. Not sure, if it will be able to carry off the persona like the Endeavor's and Fortuners do in white. Let us see.

The finish and format of the parts look good, and the metal sheets seems to be aligned well. Machining speaks volumes of what the manufacturer has invested for this application. Doors are chunky (but close soft), the L/R ORVMs are H.U.G.E. I could not believe it. Again this adds beef to the car -- and makes it look larger. Subtle put planned!

Honestly the car looks more appealing from a side profile vs. upfront. The large honeycomb (ie: honeycombs are large) did not cut it for me. Seemed they have been placed, since all companies are doing so. Was quite surprised to see this reaction from myself. What is shocking: the rear of the vehicle. All the online images I saw, the "black" strip (sorry could not click an image) looked quite crass and garish. In reality, it is well crafted and adds a superb accent to the backside rather then the usual chrome slapped on. But the chrome accent (or garnish) stuck behind the 'c' pillar was a total no-no for me. Totally ruined the aesthetic and even flow of the vehicle. It stops the eye moving left to right when sizing up the vehicle.

The interiors were a 50/50 for me. I loved the shifter and terrain selector, but hated the non-molded screen. What an eye-sore. Loved the brown wooden accents, but totally disliked the steering. Somehow the steering seemed out of place in the car. Does not go with the theme and the brand "T" is way to large, it should have been integrated a bit better. I did not inspect the other gizmos. Sorry. The driver display (in front) is inset quite deep. Looks good.

The car has a decent amount of space. Seating is comfortable, and the back seats have significant gap to the front ones. Should not feel claustrophobic in this car. I found it more comfortable getting in/out compared to a Creta I just picked up. Almost felt like getting into a hatch. Maybe because it was placed on a wooden platform and was an artificial environment. Somehow the car had figments of the DISCOVERY SUV. I just felt that. Even the way, HARRIER is written on the back.

I think TATA has a winner on their hands. Now to market and price it well. Oh yes, and the post delivery service. Congratulations!

Thanks for the inputs. Since you just picked up the Creta, how did you find the interior & exterior build quality in comparison? And did you feel this vehicle belongs to Creta's class at all as was initially speculated in this thread?

I am yet to see it in flesh but somehow felt comparison of Harrier to Creta was like comparing Creta to Ecosport.

Nice review there, and some nice points about the Harrier. Somethings like the low-rpm driveability: the engine at 1400 rpm @ 80kph ! That will be music to people who will be looking for FE on those long distance drives.

And one comment I liked: that It's like a baby Safari ! Me a Storme owner, would like to see how good my Storme's are .

Yes, the design is definitely pleasing. I like it, but my Storme's at 69k is just coming into it's own. May be a new gen Sumo or a Sierra by the time I am ready ?

re: Tata H5X Concept @ Auto Expo 2018. Named Tata Harrier! EDIT: Launched @ Rs. 12.69 lakhs

Saw the car in CyberHub today. It was an amazing experience and left me wanting the car more. Here are my inputs:

1. Car looks amazing, including the front. In reviews and pics, the front looks weird but in reality it fits quite proportionally and with those glossy cladding around the headlight area - it did not look overdone at all to me.

2. The clutch is super light and gear change is quite smooth. After starting the car, I could see some vibrations on gear lever - but salesman said that its standing on a wooden platform, plus its a pre-production model.

3. Car is really big - its huge and will definitely have road presence. The 17 inch tires do not look small and look good enough to me.

4. Heard the music system, it sounded good. However, I could only hear FM and with doors open cannot really judge the sound quality.

5. Interiors look classy. They are really well laid out and gives you feeling that you are in a premium car.

6. I tried to adjust seat to my height but felt a little shorter than I had expected. Might be first time thing and only can judge after a test drive.

7. ORVMs are really big and definitely create a blind-spot.

There was a lot of buzz around and a lot of people were looking at it. There was this one couple who had booked their Harrier and were checking every small detail of it. In the end they inquired about the pricing and found 21-22 lakh to be too much. Salesman tried to justify with better looks and features as compared to Creta (sadly he did not mention that it is a bigger and more capable car). But the couple were comparing it to Jeep and saying that its "Jeep brand". Salesman said that we offer more features as compared to similarly prices Jeep variant, plus we have better service network and lower maintenance cost. I was really irritated by them - they seemed to just not want to appreciate the product.

Two interesting things:

1) Salesman said that Automatic will come in next 6 months
2) On-road price might fall around 19-20 lakhs.

In all, it was a great experience. I am compiling a Vlog and will link it here soon.

re: Tata H5X Concept @ Auto Expo 2018. Named Tata Harrier! EDIT: Launched @ Rs. 12.69 lakhs

Checked out the Harrier Today @ CyberHub, Gurugram.

FIRST IMPRESSION: I just can't imagine coming across a HARRIER with Number Plates that would just read, "G-U-J-J-A-R", "J-A-A-T" or "Y-O-G-I" on them. i.e. the owners blatantly flouting the laws.
  • The Harrier is just too Sophisticated, Suave & Metro-sexual in attitude
  • Doesn't come across as a "Tough Guy" in terms of personality
  • Its Long and Wide, but it's NOT a Tall Car (the reason why it doesn't come across as a Tough Guy)

Regardless of the pricing, in my opinion:

The Brand Manager of the Mahindra XUV 500 can breathe easy since the XUV 500 has the Macho appeal

But the Harrier would definitely attract the potential Creta customers as it definitely has much a more sophisticated appeal.
