Hi Guys, here is now the second part update that I had promised a while ago, which is largely to do with
an accident that I had with my Seltos on the 3rd of October, exactly 4th day of taking the delivery
Firstly, I was the one driving with my wife and 3 yr old daughter buckled in the rear-bench.
We all were absolutely fine without a scratch. My daughter who was busy with her cartoons, never even realised that the accident had happened.
We were driving towards Jaipur from Ranthambore after completing the afternoon Safari (no we didn't see any tigers) and were suggested to take the route via Tonk by multiple people. So after finishing the Safari at 6:30PM, we started towards Jaipur a 180km drive.
The highway from Ranthambore to Tonk, is newly made and WIP, which has
no traffic, no streetlights, no peripheral markings or boundary, but new freshly paved roads in parts with reflectors. Within 5km leaving the city, I realised the state of the road, insisted that the daughter to be strapped in the baby seat and wife to give her company at the rear until she sleeps.
I have never seen so many cows, buffalos on a highway not going anywhere just sitting on the road (which I am assuming not too long ago was their field, and in the absence of boundaries or any traffic,
'they had the right of the way'). With no street lights and pitch black surroundings I had decided to take it slow and was progressing with extreme caution. I was having to weave through these herds regularly through all 6-lanes (3 each side), and many times honking my way through.
The all LED setup along with Fogs were all doing a good job illuminating and were responsible in allowing me to continue forward, when suddenly I managed to discern the buffalo herd, against the pitch black road just a few Metres before. I managed to brake sharply and steer right, but still hit the standing -
Mr. Buffalo The III.
The impact wasn't nasty as the car just pushed the hefty bovine forward, it fell, rolled over and got on its feet again. The car to me honestly also felt fine, other than I could see that the bonnet had folded a bit from the impact. The headlights were all working fine and the car was running without any fuss. Given it was completely deserted and I was with my family I pushed on immediately, without getting out.
My wife was quite shook-up (she was a split second quicker than me to spot them), my daughter completely unaware and me counting each mile and worried sick of the damage on the new car. At this point we were at 40km/180km and had a long way to go and the next few miles were spent me trying to ascertain if everything was working fine from the driver's seat, without stopping.
UVO: I immediately pressed the RSA button on the IRVM (no point pushing the SOS as I was still driving), and after about 2km, the cell network connected and the call was answered by KIA's call centre,
who I must add was re-assuring to have, but completely useless in finding out the service stations near my destination in Jaipur. So after 15minutes of speaking with him and assuring him that I do not need a RSA(I had no intention of waiting in the middle of nowhere with not a person around), I told him I do not think he can help me in anyway and that I would just google a KIA workshop once I reach the hotel the next day.
So the system works and had I been in a complete soup, it could have helped, but for my situation it was useless (I hope I don't have to use it again).
Long story short, I managed mid-way to stop and check the damage partially, but I could really gauge the damage only in day-light the next morning. I had informed the GIC and told them since the vehicle was running fine, I will only take it to the workshop in Delhi on the 6th, which I did.
Completing another 350km of local Jaipur sightseeing and journey back home. The car had no mechanical issues, no electrical issues, no sensor issues, no noise, hanging parts, but a completely banged up face. I am certain that even a brand new Seltos wouldn't have captured as many eyes (and Photos), as my banged up car on temp plates did. But, we did it all visiting Forts, Palaces, 5-stars, Chokhi Dhani and what not.
The car got inspected on the 7th and I was told that the number of parts which were
hit, slightly hit or had small chip or damage made-up almost of the entire front -
both headlamps, RH Fog, Bumper, Bonnet, RH fender, RH Light bar, Grill, Grill Garnish, Hinges, Air Filter Assy. etc.
Since the car was only days old, the claim was authorised and then began the arduous journey of trying to find parts and trained mechanics in the middle of Navratri season.
FYR, I had taken a fully comprehensive Zero Dep + RTI + Consumables+ many more on my own, and given the car is only 1500cc (I saved a 1k+ on file charges, because of the 1.6 downsizing to 1.5 ) paid less than 1.5k for the entire ordeal. The bill to the insurance company was north of 1.2lakh as just the different lights were 60k(28k+28k+7k+7k).
The car was finally delivered to me yesterday night on 17th (after 10days), and therefore I decided to write about it today. First service was also done given 1200+km were already done.
While if I could go back and avoid the accident by doing somethings differently, I would do so in a heart-beat. But, I am equally glad that everyone escaped unscathed and no material damage happened to the car as well. We were also able to complete our trip, as intended (although, understandably I was a bit sad the remaining days).
I can assure that Seltos is quite solidly built and tightly packaged. I know had it been any of our common Jap cars, things would have been quite different. However, as is the case in the modern cars, the engine pay is an origami of tightly packed parts, which meant that even when only 3 parts (RH Headlight, Bonnet, Bumper) were directly hit, everything else became collateral damage, resulting in quite a handsome bill.
I am enjoying my Kia again now (I have had it for 8 out of 19days now) and will keep updating on the ownership experience here. Hopefully from hereon, time at A.S.S. will be minimal.
Thank you for reading and your concerns in advance. Have a nice weekend!
