Maruti reveals its EV plans and more.


Indicaties that the first EV from Maruti might actually be on one of the more expensive products from their existing portfolio

more mass-market vehicles will soon be available once a sustainable ecosystem exists.

1. Maruti clarified that this isn't the end of the line for the internal combustion engine. India is going to have a transition. The goal is for 40 per cent of private vehicles to be electric and all the fleet vehicles.

2. Literally millions of non-electric cars will be sold before the whole market flips to all-electric. Some kinds of engines or vehicles won't make it, the difference between a small diesel hybrid and an equivalent petrol hybrid balloon to unrealistic levels with BSVI levels of emissions.

3. The future is electric vehicles and then fuel cell vehicles but the day of the petrol engine is far from over

2. Maruti will execute but tech will come from Suzuki and Toyota.

Maruti will release its first electric vehicle in 2020.

Maruti will be the executor, as it were. - it will make, sell, service and recycle these vehicles, it didn't intend to reinvent technology that "the parents" Suzuki and Toyota already had

Maruti has no real electric vehicle technologies. But Suzuki does. Toyota has even more than Suzuki. Together the two manufacturers have the technology required to make, use and recycle batteries as well as to build the infrastructure needed. He also added that being Maruti, localisation will be done as fast as possible. High import content had never been Maruti's philosophy and that policy will not change for electric vehicles.

3. Maruti will sell its first EV in India in 2020 and Suzuki will start making batteries at its new Gujarat plant also in 2020.

4. Toyota-Suzuki arrangement does have a framework but whether Maruti will exclusively be making electric vehicles or not isn't known just yet.

The first step- a market survey:
It's only after the survey finishes – sometime in February 2018 - Maruti have an "authentic basis" to answer electric vehicle questions.

2020 will hopefully witness the tide shifting to EV in affordable segment

I think it's time to consider a dedicated thread that reviews technical potentials of EV. Some of them are unique to this technology. Instant torque is one example. Some of them are cool. Tesla and Honda are thinking of concepts like sharing electricity between cars. If you car's battery is already full, but the grid is in need to more power than it's currently generating, your car (along with others) can sell some back. Someone climbing uphill is powered by one moving downhill .

By the way, 2030 target communicated earlier by Mr. Goyal was 100% EV. Appears to be a big gap between Government's target and SIAM's estimate all-electric possible only by 2047 .

That partnership with Toyota has just ensured Maruti's market-share is going to stay dominant in the mid-term. The only way their strong position could have been threatened was if someone else brought game-changing technology, but Toyota has saved Maruti.

The only reason for Toyota to have Maruti as a partner is to not to end up with unsold batteries and EVs. As per the reports, Maruti is not an investing partner but they will buy batteries, electric motors from them. Out of all the major automakers, only Japanese companies (Toyota, Honda, Mazda, etc...) are stubborn and this may hurt them in future. Toyota bet on the wrong horse (Hydrogen fuel cell) and is hoping for it to win the race. But the pace at which EV world is growing, Toyota will end up losing before even joining the race.

Toyota is somehow in a hurry to get an affordable (and a good quality) EV out there. They did a JV with Mazda recently too. Toyota will have a lot to gain from technology partnership with Suzuki, because Maruti will provide the unprecedented scale and Toyota's technology will be at the forefront.

It will be interesting to see what the framework of "Toyota-Suzuki arrangement" will be, considering Suzuki has started to build a battery plant in Gujarat, and batteries are a big contributor to the cost of an EV.

Maruti, Delhi government to develop automated driving test tracks

The Delhi government will sign a pact with Maruti Suzuki India today for developing 12 automated driving test tracks in different parts of the city

The tracks equipped with cameras and sensors will cost around Rs 1 crore each and will be spread, on an average, across one acre land, the minister said.

Maruti to start manufacturing budget electric vehicle on its own ahead of products developed in partnership with Toyota.

The Japanese carmaker will not rely solely on its partner Toyota's expertise to build EVs from the ground up.

Maruti Suzuki executives said its first EVs will be based on Suzuki's own technology. EVs from the collaboration with Toyota will come in after that.

The company and its parent are focusing on in-house capabilities but are also looking for partners to put in place the ecosystem for electric vehicles

Maruti Suzuki is likely to have an electric vehicle with a power output of 25 to 35 kilowatts per hour, suitable for the compact car segment, and possibly priced below Rs 10 lakh

The company will continue to refine its internal combustion engines as well to make them more fuel-efficient and environment-friendly. In the best-case scenario, as many as 40% of new personal vehicles sold in the local market could be pure electrics by 2030.

Suzuki will make electric vehicles for the Indian market and supply some to Toyota, as part of their pact. Toyota will provide technical support to the venture. They will also examine the establishment of charging infrastructure, training of after-sales service personnel and systems for appropriate treatment of end-of-life batteries.

One thing Maruti Suzuki is well-known for is the pocket-friendly pricing of its cars,

But just like with every other EVs, Maruti too has to compromise on competitive pricing.

But that’s probably not going to be the case for its EVs.

Kenichi Ayukawa, MD & CEO, MSIL, said: “Affordability is a concern, and we can’t seem to find answers.” Asked about considering the pricing of EVs in the price range of INR 5-6 lakh, Mr. Ayukawa said: “It’s very difficult… practically impossible, I think so.”

Maruti Suzuki is still figuring out whether to introduce electrified variants of existing models or launch dedicated models. The planning has just begun. The company was going to start conducting a consumer survey this month.

In a rush to curb fuel imports, the Indian government has decided to not gradually move to fully electrified cars and directly push for EVs, but automakers are still banking on hybrids (More practical) to create a market for EVs later. Maruti Suzuki is one of them, and it may go for offering hybrid powertrains across the range by 2030. Just like Toyota and Honda.

Correct me if I'm converting this incorrectly, but wouldn't that be 33-46 mechanical horsepower?

I'm all for the Maruti Tesla, but those power figures would make an absurdly slow car.

Verito EV is of 30.5 kW (41 hp), and is such a slouch as per the reviews. But Maruti EV may be almost 60-70% of the weight of Verito assuming it will be a hatchback and their expertise in weight reduction. Yes, battery weight can't go below a particular limit but when they say they are launching their first EV without the help from Toyota, they might have something strong in their mind. So, let's wait and see.

My expectation: A Swift EV starting at around 7Lakh! After all, there is no engine, gearbox and other mechanicals, right? Heard earlier that an EV has just 10% of the moving parts of a Petrol car!

Suzuki develops EV motor and improves cost competitiveness through in-house production.

It became clear that Suzuki started developing the driving motor for electric vehicle (EV). The company intends to install the motor internally, by 2020, in EV aiming to introduce to India and Japan.

Increase competitiveness in terms of performance and cost of EV by in-house manufacture of motor which is an important part of EV.

Suzuki set up EV business divisions in Japan.

Effective April 1, 2018, and as part of a new R&D re-organisation program, it is setting up an Electric Vehicle Division and Advanced Technology Division.

Specifically, Suzuki is to produce EVs for the Indian market and will supply some to Toyota, while Toyota is to provide technical support. Additionally, Toyota and Suzuki intend to conduct a comprehensive study of activities for the widespread acceptance and popular use of EVs in India. Such activities encompass the establishment of charging stations, human resources development that includes training for after-service technicians employed throughout sales networks, and systems for the appropriate treatment of end-of-life batteries.
