Re: GST cess on midsize sedans, SUVs & luxury cars hiked

Verna's 1.6 petrol and diesel portfolio just got a major jolt against the 1.5 P/D City and the even smaller engined Ciaz.

When will our babus ever learn to make consistent and coherent policies?

May be babus got paid really well to make non-consistent and non-coherent policies? You never know!

Re: GST cess on midsize sedans, SUVs & luxury cars hiked

From when will this be applicable? Or is it already in place?

No wonder Maruti is sticking to 1.3L, while trying to develop 1.5L diesel inhouse. Creta/Verna slipped further out of reach.

Believe this is already in place. An ordinance usually has 6 months validity. By that time it has to get parliamentary approval or it lapses

I can't fathom how is luxury analogous with engine size. Can a PIL be filed so as to make the government body make the classification according to actual luxury features and not engine size.

My first thoughts as well. This puts so many cars around the current 10-12 lakhs bracket in the "luxury" segment.

I really feel bad for Hyundai/new Verna diesel. I really loved the car & was hoping it would be segment leader for at least a year or two because of all the efforts Hyundai has put in the car.

Re: GST cess on midsize sedans, SUVs & luxury cars hiked

Read an article by NDTV auto (link) which seems to indicate that the hike to 25% is only a provision for future and that the current rate is not being hiked:

Quote:
As of now, this same taxation structure will continue to apply on cars and SUVs that fall in the 'luxury' category. The 25 per cent figure though has been thrown into the equation as a provision for future increases. This new bill though will not immediately affect any car prices as the updated GST rates have already been active since the GST council's announcement in September.

GST - Applicability of Cess likely to be extended by 2 years.

The Cesses imposed on sin goods, which includes cars, and which are taxed at 28% tax, may be continued beyond the 5 year period.

The upcoming GST Council meeting scheduled on October 5, 2020, is likely to deliberate on the amendment. The move aims at paying off the borrowed funds to compensate States.
