April 2017: Whopping price cut on Land Rover SUVs in India

Folks,

Came across this News Item at Autocar India:

http://www.autocarindia.com/auto-new...ia-404703.aspx

Price Cut Ranges from Rs. 3 Lakhs for Range Rover Evoque to hefty Rs. 50 Lakhs for Range Rover Vogue, as per above article.

Look who is benefiting from BREXIT and Weaker Pound!

MODS: I searched and could not find an appropriate thread, please merge with an already existing one, if available.

Fabulous discounts indeed.
Great for new buyers!

But just how will the chaps who bought these cars just a tad earlier feel about these price cuts, I wonder...

If a person who bought the Vogue last month commits suicide tonight, would JLR be held as accountable?

On a serious note, this kind of circus will only erode the brand value and nothing else. This is something like the Dhirubai Ambani Pioneer offer; remember the Reliance telecom offer way back 2004? A LG handset with blue backlit screen that came with bundled talktime priced at tens of thousands of rupees, and two months later available everywhere for just Rs 499?

Haven't even looked at a Reliance product since then.

But then, I am one of those who benefited from the massive discounts / price-cut for the S-Cross 1.6. So yes, Its sweet for those who benefit and bitter for those who missed out. That is the reality of life

And I agree, like you said, it erodes the confidence on the company and in the future, people will be really skeptical in buying their products - who knows, there might be a 30% discount just round the corner. At the same time, we need to appreciate Tata-JLR for passing on benefits from Pound's fall to the customers.

Tatas should be appreciated for passing on the benefits of the economy/market conditions to the customer.

Agree that the customers who paid higher for the same car earlier will feel cheated and frustrated. This will be a temporary phenomenon and Tata can take a step like what Maruti did to the S-Cross customers. Hopefully the price revision not a temporary circus/marketing gimmick.

Correction of the Luxury segment car prices is a step in the right direction.
The luxury segment car is way overpriced and in the name of "unreal" status and brand value, the prices have been alarmingly going north-bound in recent years.

The Govt can continue to impose higher duty on the CBD car imports to protect and encourage local Make-in-India manufacturing.
However Luxury car manufacturers who choose to localize the manufacturing in India should pass on the benefits of cost reduction to the customer and not continue to flog the Indian customer with unrealistic price tags.

I'm glad to hear this. JLR cars were priced far, far higher than their competition. Look at Range Rover Vogue prices how they increased with the new generation. This price cut should bring down the prices to more sensible numbers. Also no brand value is being eroded. JLR doesn't have any higher brand value than any of the German manufacturers, so why were their products priced a segment higher?

Yes, this remains to be seen that what JLR would do for existing customers. Even if they are not able to match the Monetary benefits (paying back to customers), they can dole out some other goodies, in terms of warranty, service, repairs or even a paid holiday package!

By the way, story is covered in detail on Carwale.

Quote:
The biggest change can be seen in the high-value imports where the drop in the value of the pound has led to a doubled impact thanks to the price-based import duty structure. The Range Rover Sports that used to begin at Rs 1.18 crores, now carries a price tag of Rs 86.8 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi. The top-spec 3.0-litre diesel RR Sport Autobiography comes in at Rs 1.48 crore while the 4.4-litre V8 diesel Autobiography comes in at Rs 1.58 crore. The top-of-the-line Range Rover Sport SVR that costed Rs 2.08 crore ex-Delhi, will now cost you just Rs 1.78 crore, Rs 30 lakh less.
The huge price cuts will enable the Range Rover Sports to compete with the likes of the Mercedes GLS, Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90 if the buyer wants exclusivity. Also, the Range Rover has now become an alternative that is worth considering for those who might want to go for the Porsche Cayenne, the Jeep Grand Cherokee or the Lexus RX.
The Range Rover, Land Rover’s most luxurious flagship SUV, used to carry a price tag beginning at Rs 2.12 crore for the 3.0-litre petrol as well as the diesel. These cars will now cost Rs 1.57 crore, ex-Delhi. Range Rover has also introduced a new LWB variant with a 3.0-litre V6 engine and that comes in at Rs 1.7 crore. The top-spec diesel LWB Rangie will now go for Rs 3.35 crore, more than Rs 50 lakh lower than the previous pricing. The flagship 5.0-litre supercharged petrol Rangie SV Autobiography also comes in at Rs 3.47 crore, ex-Delhi instead of the Rs 3.98 crore tag.

A typical Vogue buyer will not commit suicide over loss of few lakhs. That much will be pocket change for him. Now, when they overcharge we complain and now when there is price correction we complain. Would you support them if they pocket the savings and not pass on to customers? I'm surprised by this comment. So, according to you, there should never be any price reduction or correction. Brexit, Pound devaluation, lower import duties. No matter what the manufacturer should just continue to pocket it, right?

Great move by JLR in passing on the exchange rate benefit to customers.
People thinking it dilutes brand value should instead be happy.
Looking at this, the other manufacturers will also fall in line.

Comparing the basic RR sport to the fully loaded GLS and XC90 wont be too fair. Purely because the base RR sport is TOOOO basic! Fully loaded ones are still super expensive!!

I dont think devaluation is the total reason for the price cut. JLR must have become more realistic and also need to stimulate growth in emerging markets

Re: April 2017: Whopping price cut on Land Rover SUVs in India

Are there any details on which trims for each of these models are undergoing the price cut?
The vogue seems to range from 2 - 4 Cr, so is the 50L cut standard across?

Good for the customers – Brexit, weaker Pound all sounds good as a reason, much better than saying we are doing a price cut to stay in the competition.

Not really a surprise though; JLR is already equipped with some good models and a good pricing strategy coupled with stronger after sales support can really get them going in the growing luxury market.

Back in May 2016, the pound was around 95, now it at 81!
The cars may have been brought into India when the rates were much higher leaving little room for price adjustments.
I doubt JLR will initiate refund of cars already purchased by buyers at higher rate.
