These are not necessarily the best cars in the segment and not necessarily what i would buy, but these spring to mind the First.
Basic/Barebones : Alto/800
Entry level : Santro/Zen (I know they're discontinued)
Premium Hatch: Swift
C Segment : HONDA CITY (It takes me a few minutes to realise why someone would think of another car here)
D segment : Corolla/Civic?Octavia
Compact SUV : Ecosport
Proper Reasonably priced SUV: Safari
Taxi: Qualis/Innova
Full size sedans: Accord/Camry
Full size SUV: Land Cruiser
Sportscar: 911
Supercar: Lamborghini Murcielago
For Luxury, its Mercs All the way, C,E,S class.
And Rolls Royce(Does it even matter which one?) for Ultra Luxury
I know these choices are totally cliche and some are not even available now, but my 90's brain is stuck on these is likely to be for years to come.
And Btw, Great Idea for a thread
The cars which come to mind on first thinking about a segment are:
A segment- Maruti Alto K10

D2 segment- Skoda Superb
MPV- Toyota Innova
SUV- Ford Endeavour
Entry level luxury- BMW 3 series
Mid level luxury- BMW 5 series
High luxury- Mercedes Benz S class
Luxury SUV- Audi Q7
My choices:
- Entry level hatchback - Alto
- Mid level Hatchback - Tiago
- Premium Hatchback - Elite I 20
- Performance Hatchbacks - Polo GT
- Van - Omni
- Sub 4M sedan - Zest
- Above 4M sedan - Honda City

- Luxury SUV - Range Rover
- Ultra Luxury Sedans - S & S Maybach

Now this would be a slightly more interesting question - Which car regularly slips out your mind when you think of a segment? |
Forget about car slipping out of mind in a segment, we seem to have missed a segment completely here (except for one poster). Which segment do the Safari and Scorpio fit in? No mention of either here.
My problem is that I just do not recognize which car belongs in which segment. For example if someone were to refer to C1 segment cars I would have no clue if that person is referring to the Ameo, Xcent, Ciaz, City, Jetta, or Superb.
Will someone be kind enough to highlight the differences of the segments? Or point to the thread which does so?
Another thought, if I were to talk of the Mini Cooper S, which segment does this fall in? Is segmentation done basis price or body type or both or a combination of something else? I have no clue.

Haha. Exactly what I was thinking. I can go about rattling names of a 100 cars that come to my mind, but if you ask me what segment they belong to, then I've no clue. Especially since we have so many permutations and combinations of cars made just for our country (The CS segment for instance).
Anyway to do justice to the thread, here are the cars that come to mind as per me. Please excuse the segmentation classification
Entry - Alto
Premium - Elite i20]
CS - Indigo CS
Performance hatch - GT TSI
Sedan (please don't ask me the segmentation here) - Honda City followed closely by the Octavia.
Luxury - Mercs in their respective luxury segments stupid:
Super car - The Porsche 911
Super SUV - Porsche Cayenne
Ultra Super Luxury - The one and only Phantom. Nothing even comes close to the presence this beauty has.

I wonder if a Poll/Questionnaire could be made out of this.
We could have data for every segment if that could be done. |
I actually wanted to put up a poll but that would be very difficult until we create a separate poll for each segment. Having said that, these days there are so many segments and so many cross-segment vehicles that it becomes difficult to put options in different boxes. I also thought of using price brackets to define segments but then there are overlaps over here too. 5 - 10 lakh rupee segment being the messiest in that case. It has cars from different body types and different segments (if I can use this word) ranging from Tiago to the entry level Creta to the mid-level trim of City.
