BTW he also mentioned that opinions are embargoed till 9pm.
I am assuming that this is the Convertible version. Note that they mentioned Fixed Soft Top, Convertible and Hard Top version, hence I am guessing that the Convertible version will be a soft top one.

If we look closely, this model's soft top looks removable and hence there might not be a removable Hard top version

I’m impressed with the overall package, except for the grill, which looks straight up lame, just like the presenters of the event. However, the after-market will come to the rescue. This is the first time I’m seeing a petrol engine having more torque than its diesel counterpart. I think the hard top comes with two configurations. One that’s permanently fixed and one where we can remove the front and back panels of the roof as shown in the pictures. Mahindra should have demonstrated that in event, it would have been cool. Eagerly waiting for Team-BHP’s report.
Mechanical locking diff. Is there for LX as per their website.

This grill makes the Thar look like a handsome bodybuilder without teeth.

Wow the car looks fantastic. Finally the never ending complaints regarding the safety interior and overall appeal has been solved by mahindra. And the grill , yes it looks out of place but come on , even the mahindra knows that 100s of excellent looking aftermarket grills will be available in no time.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

WOW!! Looks like Mahindra has another winner on their hands. Looks like they followed the success story of Hyundai and Kia, offering people what they want. Diesel and Petrol variants, AT and MT options, ST and HT options. They did their research well!
I went through all the previous posts, spec sheets and I must say I'm thoroughly impressed the way Mahindra pulled it off in style. I thought petrol variant (mStallion) would be under powered but they were able to tune it to match and surpass the diesel variant, again they studied the market well. (with more people moving to petrols and the price difference of both fuels is negligible).

Just like everyone, I too hated the new grill, may be they made a last minute change based on their ordeal with FCA and Roxor in the U.S. But hey, this beast can be extremely mod friendly, the mesh grill changed front look of the car for good. Just imagine, the mesh grill and these auxillary LED light bars mounted on the front bumper. It will change the front end looks of the car for good.

And I'm sure there will be many Jeep Rubicon Angry bird style grills available in the market in coming days.

Does that wide spacing between the vertical slats mean a insect net is compulsory immediately after buying? I see no net/ mesh guarding the radiator.

Even this grille looks way better and premium.

Rear seats are too cramped.Let alone forget the comfort in seating. Also why didnt they think of reducing the hump on the tyre which is coming inside? With absolute no boot space I dont think this will appeal to masses as Mahindra feels.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

The grill seems to be a detachable piece and should be easily replaceable. I guess they will introduce a wider touchscreen in a later version. This one seems a wee bit tiny when compared to the dash.
In all likelihood this will be priced at a premium over the current gen vehicle. I need not remind you all that the door pad in the old Thar was a flat slab of plastic with holes cut in.

Loved it! However, wonder how many units per month can it do in really. 600-700 probably? Still happy to see Mahindra putting all the effort and wish them all the very best.

What a wonderful stance Thar has. It sure looks well screwed together.

Expect aftermarket read (Karol Bagh) gearing up to the gills, for this one.

God bless DB Sir's soul, for doing the 1st Gen.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

I am getting nostalgic here for 2 reasons.
1. My Dad had the Armada, facia design of which is carried forward in this Thar. I learned driving in that car.
2. I was part of a small team that was responsible for building first proto of a then concept Thar based on Invader platform. That proto was what later turned into last generation Thar.
If priced well, I might think of giving away my comfy Jetta and getting a bit adventurous here.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Love the design of entire vehicle. Thar has evolved according to the wishes of the modern consumers. No doubt there will be a huge demand for Thar if they get the pricing right.

Thar has been a cult classic and has been on the wishlist of a lot of folks. This rebirth would ensure that it gets added to the shopping cart and checked out. I am one of those.

Kudos to M&M Engineering.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Darn

I was looking at the AX Opt, Petrol, Manual with a Hard Top, reading the fine print tells me, idiots at Mahindra only are offering the Manual Petrol with either a Fixed ST or Manual convertible top, Hard Top is not an option.

Can someone get us more insight on what the manual convertible top would look like and what it exactly means.

This is really really

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Looks great inside out! Couple of observations.

  • Mechanical locking differential(s)? Do they mean a MLD on both diffs? No mention of these on the LX (lifestyle line). Maybe omitted, given the long list of other features.

  • No Petrol Manual option in LX. Only an autobox. Wonder why?

  • Remote locking - available only on the hardtop? Not an option with the convertible top?

  • The soft top fit could be better. Compared to the last iteration, all the creases make it look "unfinished".The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86-20200815_101945.jpg

  • Door handles are still the flap type. They could have used the Scorpio's pull type when the door itself is completely redesigned.
The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86-20200815_102138.jpg

  • Boot space is negligible

Now the wait starts for 02-Oct.
