So thats why my city-bred friend who has bought Thar always says he is busy. And here I was thinking that flowers and ice cream is enough, duh!

I don't agree with this at all. If you don't need a backseat for most of the time, the thar is a very good vehicle for day to day use. It is easy to park (being near the footprint size of an i20), and is reasonably comfortable for the driver and front passenger. Trivial traffic related dents and bruises don't make much of a difference unlike in a shiny sedan or hatch. ( mine is an older model with the metal bumpers) . All of these make me pick the thar instead of my city nine out of ten times if I am going out in the evening. There are many people in this forum itself who use their thar for daily commute and are satisfied with it.
I very rarely do recreational offroading, but long highway trips are quite regular. I find it a very good mile muncher. I am grateful to the thar for taking me places where other vehicles have difficulty in going, yes I mean Sandakphu, phalut and many interior places in Arunachal.
Yes I agree about the back seat, but I have never really used it anyway. The thing I don't like about the thar is its lack of safety features, hopefully this new gen thar will be a safer car.

Unfortunately I have not been able to impress any woman with the Thar! What do I need to do? I have been owning it for almost 5 years

These are the only ones who were somewhat impressed with the modified bumper of my Thar!

You have two options brother:

1. Paint the Thar pink and put some Hello Kitty stickers on it (which I think would be an abomination).

2. Wait for the right girl who appreciates the beast and loves off-roading.

(PS- Team-BHP should take note and add a dating feature too in order to relieve the pain of such fellow BHPians)

Har, har, Durango! I won’t disagree with you totally - but only as far as the current Thar goes. In places like Lucknow, the Thars that I see are all in pristine condition and it maybe concluded that they are boulvardier’s toys & and are unlikely to go further off-road than Lucknow’s outskirts. The Sandakphu veterans using such cars (Thar, Scorpio, Bolero etc) are few and far between. They are certainly putting them to intended use. And as folks have commented, there are others using the Thar as a regular commute.

But looking at the spy shots of the 2020 Thar (BS-IV & NCAP compliant) and from the leaked data about its sinews – being based on the Scorpio platform, hopefully with matching foot-print – it doesn’t look half bad! All the comments seem to emphasize that it is a good bit larger than the current Thar with matching road presence. And if it meets all the imminent emission & safety requirements, I’m all for it!

I would like to make a small correction to the above - it should read - BS-VI & NCAP compliant..

Catching up after a long time on this thread. This if it comes along as specified would be the ideal vehicle I can swap my scoprio with. The 4x4 give me the practicality to indulge in a new hobby while still doing regular city drives and occasional highway rides to places where a regular car can't go.

Just hope the pricing is not too far off my expectations! I guess 12-15 lakhs with multiple configuration options would be a good start IMHO

Recently, 2020 Mahindra Thar has been caught testing alongside the TUV300 Plus. Taking a look on almost spy pictures of the next gen Mahidra, some of the notable changes on SUV have been observed. Firstly, the car witnesses significant modification in terms of dimensions, as seen on the spy pictures. Additionally, its design seems to be sharper and more modern. I still expect that the new-gen Mahindra Thar would offer much different look compared to the ongoing model. But the exterior retains some signature styling elements such ass boxy shape, seven-slat vertical grille, circular headlights, front direction indicators, a flat bonnet, circular halogen headlamps, hinged boot lid and rear-mounted spare wheel from the previous model.

Temporary part sharing on the test cars I guess.

Can't get four power windows when there isn't even four windows on the car.

Does that look like an Automatic gear lever? Certainly does from this angle with a shifter button below the knob

Correct. There is an automatic version also testing. Hope it does make it to production.

If you see the spy pictures, the gear knob for the manual and automatic are shaped differently.
