Why not. Just because the older one was priced at certain price point, doesn't really mean the new one should continue from there on. With present market conditions, pandemic around, tight pockets, low sales.. they would not want to start off with a wrong foot. Note the price slash of XUV300 recently. They would certainly put it all together when pricing. And setting the starting price just below 10L (like 9.99L..) would create a mindset of it being a budget vehicle.

Highly doubtful for this to be true. Lot of inconsistencies.

Re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Here's an update to my earlier homework (The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86) - revised to incorporate some changes in the M&M Thar website, as well as including some of the common specs that I had left out -

(Click on the image to open the actual size)

The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86-thar-1.png

The Thar website has removed the AX 2-Seater non-AC variant, and so have I. Also, this site does not list Black in the LX Hardtop Diesel Automatic - While this might be a miss, I am going by what they say for now.

With that, here is the feature differences between the variants -

The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86-thar-2.png

The base AX 6-Seater AC variant priced at 9.99 Lakhs is still plausible, considering the base Scorpio is 12.58 Lakhs - for a bigger and more feature-rich SUV. Yes, Thar is 4x4, while Scorpio is not - but that is the only +ve for Thar AX vs. Scorpio base.

So my take on the pricing prediction game stands revised as follows -
  • AX AC Manual - 9.74 Lakhs
  • AX Opt Hardtop - 9.99 Lakhs
  • AX Opt Convertible - 9.99 Lakhs
  • VX Manual Hardtop - 12.74 Lakhs
  • VX Auto Hardtop - 13.74 Lakhs
  • VX Auto Convertible - 13.74 Lakhs
I am going to bet that both Diesel and Petrol variants are going to priced closer to each other - the mStallion is a modern Turbo GDI engine, and the usual premium that a Diesel engine will have over comparable Petrol engines will not apply. I won't be surprised if Petrol variants are pricier than equivalent Diesels!

New Mahindra Thar AX Soft Top Petrol with new grille and steel wheels.

As per Qadir, who shared these images on his Instagram account, this was the first private preview of new Thar. Another thing to note here is that this test mule is wearing a different front grille. It is featuring the classic Jeep inspired grille, and not the new grille which was seen on the debut car, that was unveiled last month by Mahindra. Mahindra planning to offer different grille options with the new Thar as optional extras.

The website doesnt show the Diesel MT LX with a convertible top.

Wasnt it supposed to have that option? I'm confused now.

MT Convertible was always in AX, both Petrol and Diesel - LX only had automatic convertibles (both fuel types again). At least that is what it looks like going by the files I have saved as a part of my "homework" from 15th Aug

Interesting new AD from Jeep India. Claims "There is only one".

Start of a battle against the new Thar?

Re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

A bit of a misleading ad by Jeep. The vehicle shown here is not a Willys overland prototype, this one has 9 slat grill which is a ford design. The entire vehicle itself was designed by three companies at this point and production started in 1941. Willys did not get the trademark till 1950.

They should have instead shown the CJ2A Universal Jeep which has the 7 slat grill but then they would have lost the 'War' credentials.

Does anyone have any clue if the new Thar will be launched with A/T or H/T tires? I am hoping the new amount of Thar owners with their 18 inch wheels will drive up demand of 18 in A/T tires in the aftermarket space.

IIRC I read somewhere that M&M had commissioned Ceat to make these AT’s specifically for the Thar. Also, someone here commented a while ago that there’s not many 18” options available on the Indian market (of which am not very familiar with).

LX Manual Hardtop at 12.74 lacs ex showroom for Bangalore would translate to almost 16 lacs plus on road. That's where the problem starts for first time buyers wanting to get Thar as the sole vehicle in the garage. I presume LX will be targeted to people wanting luxury to some extent and hence presumably very little to no offroading.
At this price you are in the Harrier territory (XE costs 17.53 lacs on road). So unless you do atleast 10 % proper offroading (I mean offroading, not dirt trails), what's the point in buying the Thar. Seems this is going to be a very difficult proposition for people like me who were ready to live with the shortcomings of Thar as a sole car in the garage. Huh, why don't I have Aladdin's chirag!
