The Range Rover Velar. EDIT: Now spotted in India!

Land Rover has confirmed a new model in its Range Rover line-up. Called the Velar, this new mid-size luxury SUV will slot between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.

This will mark the launch of the fourth product in the Range Rover lineup. The name Velar has been derived from the Latin word velare, which means to veil or cover. This name was first used by Land Rover in the 1960s in order to hide the true identity of the 26 pre-production Range Rover models.

The initial images released by the automaker ahead of the SUV's official unveiling indicate that the Range Rover Velar will be slightly bigger than the Evoque and will come with a large panoramic sunroof. The overall design language is similar to what is currently seen on other Range Rover models, though the Velar appears to get relatively smoother character lines.

Details about the powertrain, variants and features on offer with the Range Rover Velar will be revealed at its global premiere on March 1, 2017.

re: The Range Rover Velar. EDIT: Now spotted in India!

Why do I feel that introducing the Velar is just an excuse to raise the starting price of the Range Rover sport and evoque by spreading itself all over the segment gap.

We've seen this practice before with Audi and Mercedes when they brought in the A3 and CLA. Both cars now occupy the 30-35l price bracket that the A4 and C Class previously shared, in turn bumping them up a segment higher. The C Class is now pushing 50 lacs, which not long ago was E Class money.

Now with the Velar, the Sport will easily be priced outside the segment.

we can't be 100 per cent certain that this interior shot is from a Range Rover Velar, judging by the official image released by Land Rover on Wednesday, we're leaning towards confirming that it is.

re: The Range Rover Velar. EDIT: Now spotted in India!

Range Rover Velar revealed through a Spanish website!

The Velar’s design aesthetic is clearly derived from the Evoque’s low sleek lines, and the general idea of a stretched Evoque

The interior shows the use of flat screens in the center stack, a wide upper screen with a prominent bezel is joined by a lower screen that’s seamlessly inset into a larger glossy panel, giving the illusion that there’s physical controls embedded into a tablet-like screen.

So, is this a F Pace under RR clothing?

Here is Mat Watson with the Velar. The interior looks really slick with those twin high resolution touchscreens.

re: The Range Rover Velar. EDIT: Now spotted in India!

Land Rover has officially unveiled the Velar which is the 4th car in the Range Rover series. The original Velar was launched in 1970, and now the name has been re-introduced to fill in the gap between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport. The car will make its debut at the Geneva International Motor Show this month.

The Velar uses Land Rover's lightweight Aluminium Architecture and follows the design lines of its Range Rover siblings. It will be available as the Velar and Velar R-Dynamic range, and each of these will have 4 variants - Standard, S, SE and HSE. There is also a First Edition model which will be available worldwide for just one model year. Upfront, the car gets full LED headlamps with DRLs and a grille which is similar to the one seen on the Evoque (but this one is broader). The front bumper houses air inlets as well as a skid plate at the bottom. The Velar has a wheelbase of 2,874 mm and the pillars are blacked out which is seen throughout the Range Rover series. The rear taillights and fog lights also get LED treatment while the twin chrome exhausts are integrated into the rear bumper.

On the inside, the front seats have 20-way adjustment with heating, cooling and massage functions. The rear seats are also available with heating and electric recline options. The car has a four zone climate control system and two 10-inch touchscreens. Direct access to various functions can be personalized on both these screens. SE and above variants have a 12.3 inch MFD behind the steering wheel which shows information such as speed, turn-by-turn navigation, safety system warnings etc. It also gets a head-up display and the luggage compartment is 673 litres. In terms of safety, the Velar is equipped with 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, dynamic stability control, cornering brake control, roll stability control and emergency brake assist. Electronic air suspension allows the height to be lowered by 50 mm.

Two petrol and two diesel engines are on offer. The petrol engine is a 2.0 L, in-line 4-cylinder engine which makes 247 BHP and 365 Nm of torque. The First edition model will be available with a 3.0 L, V6 petrol engine which is capable of producing 375 BHP. The 2.0 L Ingenium diesel engine is rated at 177 BHP and 430 Nm while the 3.0 L churns out 296 BHP and 700 Nm of torque.

The Range Rover Velar will go on sale from Summer 2017 in the UK and Europe.

This looks amazing. Waiting to see this in person .

Another interesting point highlighted about the Interior in Autocar UK.

Land Rover are offering a high grade textile material in the interiors as an alternate to leather.

In the customisation page of the Range Rover Velar website, it shows as "Premium Textile and Suedecloth"

Autocar Reports:

... leather-free interior option co-developed with leading European textile manufacturer Kvadrat....

The part-wool, part-polyester blend is warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s warm. It’s hard-wearing, they promise, and you won’t regret ticking the option box at the first spillage. To my (admittedly very non-expert) eye the seats are stylish and the surfaces are eye-catching, There’s every bit as much, if not more, craftsmanship on display than on leatherwork. Sure, there’s no cost saving in ticking this option box over the leather one - but to eyes like mine, that’s fine, because it looks and feels superior. Above all, I love it because it showcases a different way of thinking.

re: The Range Rover Velar. EDIT: Now spotted in India!

This car starts at 37 lac rupees in the UK. I expect it to be nothing less than a Crore or so in India. Sadly even if it was costing 60 or 70 lacs it would find more takers. JLR really charges a premium in India.

Lovely car but dreams of buying a RR in India remain a dream for many.

I'm assuming it'll be priced pretty similarly to the F-Pace with S, SE editions with 2.0 Ingenium I-4 engines starting in the 66-69L region going up to 1cr for top end HSE Luxury / Autobiography variants. With the "R" variant of Macan available under 80L theres no way they are doing a mistake of launching it at a starting price of a crore unless they are smoking some great stuff

Looks much better than its cousin F-Pace though and undoubtedly the best looking SUV that money can buy IMO!

Isn't the dream somewhat blunted by service by Tata?

Actually, I've never been a Range Rover fan, but I do like the lines of this one.

With the proviso that all the expensive steering wheels I've seen for the past decade have been in photos... I don't like the look of this one. It looks kitsch. Thrown together, like putting a high-tech console into an old sofa.

Hey ho. Hardly matters, as I'm unlikely to get closer than a photo to this one, but I really do think they could have done better.

I'm not sure if you say that coz of the premium they charge or service or both I couldn't agree more that as aggressive as JLR getting globally after Tata takeover specially in the last couple of years they are going lazy sleepyheads in India. Making a product available after the global launch takes AGES in India, model availability and also the customisation options. OT but I'd also like to bring it to notice that around a week back they launched CKD Jaguar XF and announced the pricing to be 47.5L. Now half the part of the country (Referring to Kolkata and Lucknow) they say they have not even received the updated pricing of the car. Go to their much discussed findmeacar.in and bang! you'll find only old prices and not to mention sad equipment levels they are offering. Its been a year now, have travelled abroad and visited a lot of car dealerships and done extensive research on products available and I'll come to a conclusion that leaving the dealerships aside JLR India is probably the DULLEST management team you can ever come across. Whereas JLR globally is doing greatttt work their Indian counterpart is just lazy

Great exterior lines. This steering along with the current S Class' steering are among the worst designs.
