RavenAvi, any idea what is up for an unveil on 2nd Feb as per the following tweet by Tata?

The cat is out of the bag.

Tomorrow, i.e. February 2nd, Tata Motors will take the wraps off it's first-ever performance sub-brand called TaMo (or Tamo, short for Tata Motors).

Conceived on the same lines as Honda's Mugen sub-brand and Hyundai's N-performance brand, the first TaMo product is expected to be unveiled tomorrow (either in design or concept form) - a performance car with significantly big power/torque numbers, unlike any Tata car in the past or present.

This could be the 2-seater sports car which has been doing the rumour rounds since the past year or so.

Quote:

We also hear that Tamo’s first car has been developed with synergies from the Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC) in Coventry, UK and the Tata Engineering Research Centre (ERC) in Pune. Tata had made its intentions clear about spawning a performance sub-brand after it showcased the Bolt Sport concept a while back and the Tamo is in line with that strategy. However the new car has nothing to do with existing platforms and products. The Bolt Sport is part of an entirely different program that is still under consideration. The TaMo car is an all new platform and is expected to be built in limited numbers, specific details will follow shortly.

Tomorrow however we may simply witness a render of the actual car, since we hear Tata Motors is expected to showcase the concept if not a production ready version at the Geneva Motor show. Now the Geneva Motor Show has always held a prestigious spot in Tata Motors’ product strategies, so something as global as this first Tamo car, there couldn’t be a better platform. We aren’t sure if and when the prototype will enter production, but we expect the details to be revealed on the run-up to the motor show.

It may not be a very imaginative name for a performance sub-brand, but it does sound good! Tata Tamo sounds a bit like Nissan Nismo, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I like the idea of a performance sub-brand from Tata even more! clap:

A red-hot performance sub-brand will surely help Tata in moving away from the Indica / Indigo / Sumo / Venture image as a yellow-board favourite.

Tata must not keep the Tamo sub-brand limited to low volume performance cars like the 2-seater they're going to showcase. They can make a good beginning (in India at least) with a Tiago Sport featuring the 1.2 Revotron turbo-petrol (from the Nexon), larger wheels & tyres, better brakes (with discs at the rear) and some sporty exterior & interior bits.

This is very true! Regardless of its sales numbers, this might be better marketing and brand building for tata than maybe even a 100 cr campaign with celebrity endorsements!

It'll be a long difficult path for Tata if they have to regain mass market acceptance. But every little bit helps to eventually get foot falls and better sales for all their models!

ACI sources reveal that Tata Motors will indeed unveil the TaMo performance sub-brand tomorrow and take the wraps off it's first concept car from this all-new division - the "Futuro" (internal name) two-seater sports car.

The TaMo "Futuro" will see an official worldwide unveiling at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show later in March, and will be officially launched to go on sale by mid-2018. To be placed as a halo offering, Tata Motors is planning to give the sports car a limited run of only 250 units, while doing it's best to offer the "Futuro" at a sticker price of Rs 25 lakhs.

The Futuro’s styling is believed to be a modern interpretation of the erstwhile Opel Speedster (or Vauxhall VX220) and according to a company source will be ‘a stunning looking car for the money.’

Details of the Futuro aren’t very clear but company sources say that the Tamo sportscar will be powered by a turbocharged 1.2 Revotron engine boosted to develop 180hp. Whilst the power output in absolute terms is unimpressive, a target kerb weight of under 800kg will give the Futuro a good power-to-weight ratio and hence decent performance. Tata Motors engineers are working hard to keep weight down and will use a mixture of composite plastics and aluminium to achieve this. Cost constraints have ruled out the use of carbon-fibre or any other exotic material. The Futuro has been completely designed in-house, but, according to sources, the chassis construction is by design legend Marcello Gandini.

Tata Motors is very serious about the Futuro, which it hopes will be a key model under the Tamo brand. Tata Motors’ strategy to launch the Tamo division is part of a massive brand overhaul the company has embarked on to transform its image from a carmaker of yesteryears to one that connects with tomorrow’s car buyers.

Looks like Tata is finally making the sports car.

Thought it would be a FWD coupe/ roadster. But looks like it's a pucca sportcar. Mid engine RWD et al. Will be unveiled at the Geneva motor show.

But pray it isn't like all the other dead concepts shown by Tata for decades. Even the one shown by the Autocar is the Aria roadster shown in 2001.

A post by RavenAvi in the Nano Pelican was shown to me by my buddy, and I pointed it out too, but no one shared the enthusiasm (well, obviously)

Thought would be priced between 15-20 lakhs ( 24 yr old wish:D )

But mid engine RWD. Go on Tata. This would be enough to change your whole image.clap:

Just another filler by ACI. That design from 2001 looks more like a modded Amby than a Tata.

Search for the words tata + sports + car in TBHP and you will find quite a few threads on Sports versions of Tata cars. But nothing happening. I dont think this rumor needs a separate thread, yet.

There was an overdrive teaser as well that the brand is called Tamo (:Frustrati) and the details would be unveiled today.

Don't see any candidate other than the Tiago worthy of getting a Sport variant. Others are all too 'mota' to be given the Tamo treatment.

That is not a render, but a file photo of the Aria concept shown at the Geneva motor show, more than a decade and a half ago.
Tata motors has invited the press for some future and technological unveil today. So lets wait and see what they have got.

Tamo is not a very sporty name for the division though. They could have come up with something like T-Power or T-Line for their sports division.

Also, I was hoping they would have a Tiago Sport, in a very usable power-tune of about 120 PS and a really affordable price tag.

Man, you just stole my words. With that suspension and braking performance along with the neutral dynamics of Tiago. It can actually be a much usable car with a tinge of power.

I hope and pray this turns out to be just a rumour. This would be such a wasteful exercise given the company barely has the street cred to sell an entry level hatchback which betters the rivals on basically every measurable parameter and yet cannot outsell them.

The company has no legacy of making sports cars either. You can't have a halo product for a bargian basement brand and it is not going to help its cause either.

TaMo is the sub-brand name right? The car will be called something else and per rumours is supposed to be Bolt Sports. While Tata has no legacy, I guess it is being developed with Jaguar inputs.

BTW, who comes up with these terrible names? TaMo from Tata and Dominar from Baja?

This can be a golden brand building opportunity for TML.

A fun to drive, mid engined, 180ps, turbocharged, manual transmission sports car with gorgeous looks and a killer price tag. Reliable birdies are muttering that Marcello Gandini's services were roped in for the concept.
The vehicle against which it was benchmarked was the Vauxhall VX 220 / Opel Speedster. Compact, powerful, lighweight and fuel efficient - the VX220 ticked all the boxes in 2001 when it was launched. It received rave reviews from the hyper-critical British motoring press and even went on to win a car of the year award.

One request: and a serious request to all folks at TML. Please do not try to build the new brand yourselves. You can't. You will make a hash of it.
Please talk to your group company cousin - TITAN - head honcho's - who have had experience building a fabulous brand out of nothing and virtually monopolising the branded watch , and now the branded jewellery, market through TITAN and Tanishq.
Please engage them - even on contract - ask them to build the brand for all its worth.
TML - you please concentrate on building a great car.

please:

Tata Motors could come up with a sports car concept for Geneva auto show. But when I read reports of Tata Motors (or any other manufacturer) launching an affordable sports car in India, I immediately file it in my "Mild Comedy" folder.

Tata Motors really need a better logo/hood ornament. The current one ruins the look of any car that it is placed on.

Not a big issue for something like a Sumo, but if Tata is looking to move up the value chain they need to make a fresh start with that logo.

This is the new Tata 3D logo from Hexa and Tiago front grills. It looks nice comparing to old logo.
