Datsun is reportedly working on two new variants for its entry-level hatchback offering - the redi-GO. While one of these variants is expected to come with a more powerful 1.0-litre engine, the other will get an AMT gearbox to enhance its city-friendly nature. Though the automaker hasn't revealed any official timelines yet, reports suggest that the two variants will be launched in India by June 2017.

The redi-GO is a brand reengineered sibling of the Renault Kwid. Both cars are based on the CMA platform and are offered with a 0.8-litre petrol engine as standard. The Kwid was launched with a bigger 1.0-litre engine in August last year, while it got the AMT gearbox in November. The redi-GO will now borrow these new powertrain options as well. As per speculations, Datsun will likely offer the 1.0-litre and AMT option only on the top-end S trim.

The 1.0-litre engine will be similar to the one found on the Kwid. It is expected to deliver 67 BHP and 91 Nm of torque, and will be offered with two transmission options: a 5-speed MT and an AMT. It remains to be seen whether Datsun offers the AMT gearbox with rotary controls as seen on the Kwid, or equips the car with a conventional-looking gear stick, similar to the setup found on the Alto K10 AMT.

Considering the little Datsun's waif like kerb weight, the 1.0L (combined with some intelligent gearing), will definitely make it peppy.
And a well calibrated AMT will enhance its competitiveness in the entry level hatchback space.
Hope Nissan gives it a conventional AT selector lever with tiptronic?

I recently heard that an overwhelming majority of sales for the Datsun brand are from the taxi segment. This might help them get some more numbers from individual buyers who pay a higher transaction price. Since the Kwid got these updates, it was only a matter of time before the Redi-GO does.

I'm not too happy with the Kwid's bare-bone deployment of what was already a bare-bone transmission. Won't be too hopeful. They've cut too many corners with their AMT. Related post:

Renault has stripped the AMT (an already basic automatic) of crucial features. The lack of manual mode is disappointing. These 3-cylinder 1.0s are small engines at the end of the day and there will be several situations where you need manual mode (overtaking, climbing steep inclines, engine braking down the ghats). No creep is another bummer; how can you make it harder to use an AT??? The Alto AMT provides both of these features and more. All automatics aren't equal and the Alto's is clearly the superior deployment. Plus, I like the Maruti 1.0 engine more than Renault's.

I wish Renault had just charged Rs. 10,000 extra and given it all the regular AT features.
