Tata motors has still to commence the deliveries of the Curvv. Followed by it, Nexon CNG with Revotron turbo with AMT will raise deliveries of the Nexon range. Roxx will at the most increase deliveries to 6,000 but the 3 door Thar deliveries will drop drastically causing increase to max of 3000 cars. But Curvv with Nexon CNG will raise sales by another 7000+ cars. The dip is temporary and will boost up if deliveries commence within this week. Dealer dispatches seems to have commenced.

Just as the Roxx might cannibalize the Thar and, to some extent, even the Scorpio range, I believe the Curvv could have a similar impact on the Nexon. Given that Mahindra has already been stocking up the Roxx well before official bookings have begun, I anticipate strong initial numbers for the model. Additionally, with Mahindra having significantly ramped up production recently, I expect bookings to convert into actual orders more quickly for the entire product range. I also foresee the Roxx potentially affecting Hyundai Creta sales to some degree. Considering all these factors, I believe Mahindra has the potential to secure the second spot in the sales chart. Only time will tell.

Both Tata and Mahindra have added new models. Both will eat sales out of their own siblings. Tata Cruvv will eat into Harrier and Nexon sales. Mahindra Thar Roxx will eat into Mahindra Thar - 3 door sales. According to me, the dispatch numbers will maintain status quo.

Adding more details on how sales look vs dispatches for Aug'24 for Top 5 Manufacturers-

Tata and Mahindra are neck to neck in sales and dispatches. Hyundai, Toyota and Kia are adding huge numbers to the inventory (from percentage standpoint). Mahindra has lowest inventory addition in Aug'24. Tata and Maruti has near 10% addition.

Strong Hybrid vs EV sales for Aug'24 stood at 7023 vs 6300.

This doesn't hold much difference as tax brackets will cause lot of difference in the price range. Roxx and 3-D Thar come in the same 28+22% price bracket but Nexon and Curvv are in different tax brackets culminating in cost difference. They will not cannibalise within much except in the EV space where there is no difference in taxes. That has shown with many Nexon EV buyers shifting to Curvv EVs with the introductory pricing. Curvv will also not eat into Harrier as price range, sheer size, fuel efficiency and category perception will play the game.

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

Personally I feel that Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos will lose about 20% of their sales to Thar Roxx and Tata Curvv combined. Grand Vitara, Hyrider (non-hybrid), Jimny, Taigun and Kushaq numbers will come down and these numbers will go to Thar Roxx and Curvv. People who were looking to buy Harrier will tend to gravitate towards Thar Roxx and not towards Curvv. I expect more price "rationalisation" or discounts for the above mentioned models in the coming months. Ultimately Hyundai, Tata and Mahindra will consistently sell 45,000 - 50,000 vehicles every month till the end of this FY.

Coming to Tata vs Mahindra, Tata has now entered a purple patch where whatever they develop, will sell. Only Maruti and Hyundai have enjoyed this before. Mahindra was in a better position vis-a-vis Tata till 2020, but they ruined it with poor product positioning and quirky designs and funny sounding names (Quanto, Nuvosport, KUV100, Marazzo, Alturas G4, TUV300 Plus). Though the vehicles were mechanically sound, their quirkiness came in the way of mass appeal. Thankfully, Mahindra has matured in terms of styling in last 4-5 years. (Of course, even before someone from Tata joined them )

In the last 2-3 years, Mahindra's monthly sales has been limited by their production constraints and not because of low demand. If they re-launch Marazzo with toned down design elements, AT and a sunroof, it will bring another 4000 units sales per month easily.

Lastly, this thread is chronicling Tata's journey from the verge of failure (2016) to the number 2/3 spot. Understandably, there are Tata loyalists here who have their own reasons for liking the brand. It may be a good idea to start chronicling the progress of Mahindra in a seperate thread.

Tata Motors September dispatch numbers to hit 50k.

As per Nuvama report Tata Motors sales to be stupendous for the month of September 2024. The sales volumes to inch up by good numbers. They expect sales numbers to touch 50k to see an 11% year-on-year jump in sales. In contrast, commercial vehicles are expected to decline around 10% to 35,150 units.

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

W.O.W

An often-used term, "life turns a full circle," has become true for Mahindra. When this thread started 8 years ago, Mahindra was in 3rd position and TATA was in 5th, behind Honda. A resolute TATA began a stunning comeback, took the number 3 position and consolidated it for a few years.

40 pages and 8 years later, Just as TATA was trying to compete with Hyundai for the number 2 spot, Mahindra has staged an even more spectacular comeback to not only retake 3rd position but give a big fight to Hyundai for 2nd position.

Thrilled to see 2 homegrown OEMs giving a good fight to others as well as each other. Both need to now NOT be complacent and bring on Hybrid technology ASAP as Hyundai is not sitting quietly.

A more holistic view on how sales compared with dispatches till Sep'24.
  1. Sales for all manufacturers hit CY'24 low. Tata and Kia saw the biggest hit.
  2. All manufacturers pumped large inventory numbers in Sep'24 in anticipation of the festival month
  3. Mahindra continues to hold the lowest inventory despite bumper dispatches in Sep'24 month.
  4. Kia, Toyota and Hyundai continue to hold high inventory numbers. Their inventory is now sitting at 125% of the average monthly sales where as Maruti, Mahindra, Tata hold around 1 month of average sales as inventory.
All dealers / manufacturers must be looking forward to a very successful festive season.

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

When you see all this data, it makes you appreciate the white-collar people at MSIL. They manage to gather data from 3000 odd dealers and keep on monitoring the dispatches/sales/inventory for close to 20 models month on month. To have such low numbers of inventory pile up despite being miles ahead of everyone else in terms of numbers is absolutely praiseworthy.

Is
https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/vahan...oardview.xhtml URL correct for Vahan Dashboard which you referred to get the data?

The total registration data table widgets for September 2024 shows Mahindra's registration count as 51,641. This is more than total units dispatched by Mahindra in September 2024.
The total registration table for Tata is about (25662 + 27469 =) 53,131 units. This again is about 12k more than units dispatched by Tata in September.

Does this indicate that dealers were able to clean up lot of piled up inventory?

Overall data(which you have indicated) for Mahindra and Tata includes their Light Goods Vehicle sales as well. So we need to filter out the data for light passenger/motor vehicles

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

@kgt.v8 while your findings may be correct, I believe Tata needs to being in few more of bigger cars than sell the Tiago & Tigor.

Their small cars had limited success only & can continue to soldier on, but where Mahindra is better is it's bogger cars, that too with Petrol engines. This definitely draws significant numbers to showroom & they easily end up buying a Mahindra (even diesel one) than walking out. Plus they are too slow in launching bigger products as compared to primary competition. Mahindra definitely has a hot lineup of big cars from Thar to Thar Roxx, Bolero to Bolero N10, Scorpio to ScorpioN & XUV700 5 & & seater variants. Latter's smallest car is competition to their medium size car, which also points to flawed strategy of former in difficult times.

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

Selling cars today is not an easy business. One of my Japanese OEM counterparts explained the predicament.

Basically the CAFE norms are extremely punishing for OEMs which do not have an EV heavy or a small car heavy line up. Basically for every EV one sells, one can sell maybe 2 or 3 big SUV. If the ratio gets skewed then an OEM can end in a situation where they pay huge fines as the average emission values increase for their fleet.

Last year Hyundai had stopped sales of Santro/Eon and had very slow sales of EVs. Their skewed sales ratios resulted in big penalties in India. I remember Suzuki paying 1000+ crore fines in Europe under CAFE rules after which they launched Ignis, Swift and cut down on SUV sales to balance their emissions values. The Jimny too was stopped as a result in Europe.

In the Indian context, same may be hampering TATA. They may have the demand and capabilities to sell more but the tapering EV sales is a double whammy which is stopping them from selling more of their SUV cars. It is for their own survival TATA has to launch more EVs and not due to their worry about environment or any other altruistic reasons.
