Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

This is such a good news for a brand which inspite of all the flaws has given quite a few firsts. Notwithstanding the potentials to improve this is a great journey and proud of you Tata. The big sea change we can see in all "what car" threads is that in most segments a Tata car is part of the list almost always.
Tata's have also reaped a lot of benefit from the never ending waiting list of better perceived products like XUV700 by managing their inventories better.
Ofcourse it's still a long journey for them but kudos to what they have achieved. Hope they can maintain the momentum.

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

Dear Tata-please enter into the segment dominated by Ertiga and XL6. You have the diesel engines. You are capable of finding a suitable gearbox for it. You have all the capabilities and the chassis modifications knowhow.
The ones who buy your Punch and Tiago today will be the ones who would need your “Ertiga competitor” 5 years from now.
Thank you.

More options are always good for the consumer and its fabulous that TATA is stepping up the game with some great products! Kudos to TAMO .
This is a great learning where no amount of rebranding and marketing will work till one backs it up with functional and utility value products.

The numbers show, that while the rest of the industry is affected by semiconductor shortages, Tata is simply going pedal to the metal minting cars ! While others are struggling with long waiting periods and reduced dispatches Tata has pounced upon this opportunity and literally struck gold.

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

There are several factors internal and external driving Tata's growth.

1. An increasingly settled line-up or genuinly good products. Each word in that sentence is important - none more than settled given that confidence in their new product tends to be low, the new platforms are now maturing with multiple products coming through. This can and will only get better.

2. Their outstanding legacy of Pratap Bose's design language - which they can ride for a few years to come by siply doing incremental changes.

3. Service impression while still ordinary, is improving ever so gradually.

4. The competitive landscape - frankly only Hyundai's line-up seems anywhere close to challenging the Tatas on value and over all product. And TaMo is outdoing Hyundai on significant aspects too - price (less so, but still), design and most critically safety where Hyundai has taken sever beating off late.

5. Maruti is looking at a ticking bomb. Not apparent yet, but its coming.

6. Relative priceiness and apathy of other foreign players. VW is trying but seems to be like a brilliant driver who's been drunk for a while. Renault-Nissan have one foot outta door. Jeep's out in the jungle somewhere, no clue of reality.

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

The EV count is a result of 1st move by TATA in this EV space, by the time other players match up to market expectations TATA would have gained significant experience in this space. If they are consistent then they will be able to sustain the lead and gain profits likewise...

Powertrains are Tata biggest weakness. Frankly the current family of diesel and petrol engines and gearbox are either unrefined, weak or outsourced.

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

TATA's pitch of more car per car including a safe car is reaping benefits. Of course, this is the result of everyone's work at TATA Motors but if we have to credit one more person for TM's turnaround, it would be the late Karl Slym.

I sincerely wish they sort out Harrier/Safari niggles soon and make them mature products.

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

Tata motors maintained the sales momentum and grew over 51% on a relatively larger base. Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai the top players declined in January.

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

Kudos to all in TML this is a beginning of a new chapter and hope they can go from strength to strength.
IMHO few things that Tata had with them was
1. Nexon: this car hit all the right notes and was lapped up

2. EV: Tata came out of the door fast and furious on this and was bang on with their car positioning and the numbers speaks for themself

3. In India For Indians By Indians: This is what tail wind Tata wanted and they were there to exploit it to the hilt, Tata through various PR's reminded Indians that Make In India is the way forward and Tata (Mahindra also) are the future of India

Everything said, Tata should aim for the 2nd position now and long term strategy should be to overtake MSIL, with right car mix of EVs, petrol and CNG Tata can do it. MSIL with backing of Toyota will be a tough to be dethrone but then "No motor company has the birth right to be number 1 for ever"

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

These are great numbers. Kudos to Tata.

While it is great to see Tata closing the gap between Tata and Hyundai, I feel, there is a lot of difference in the cars made by Hyundai and Tata. Without the safety aspect, I would always pick or recommend a Hyundai. Tata has come a long way. It is commendable. But just the sales count or the mocking tweets by Tata can not make Tata better than Hyundai. If Hyundai decides to make their cars safer, I am pretty sure they can do a better job than Tata. But Tata simply cannot match up to the Hyundai sales and service experience, and the overall ownership experience. Tata needs to make reliable cars and improve it's service experience. Only then can Tata really be the second best car company in India.

Also, in the long term, for Tata to remain in the top two best selling brands, Tata needs to have a car in their port folio for a long time. The oldest car on offer is the Tiago. Someone who bought a zest in 2020 Q1 has only two years of ownership but is already driving a car that's not on sale anymore. Look at Maruti and Hyundai, they have multiple cars that span close to a decade and some cars even more. Tata needs to stop axing cars.

Le't give credit to where it is due. For a manufacturer who was selling 8-10K cars per month, this jump of 300% is very impressive. And that too when the market is very gloomy.

And why is "reliability" and "service experience" a deciding factor here, while safety is not?

Again, All those "old cars" from Maruti and Hyundai exist only in names. They have changed the models comprehensively in every 5 -6 years. If your example of Zest is correct, then the statement like "someone who bought an Elite i20 in 2019 has only 1 year of ownership but is already driving a car that's not on sale anymore" will also be correct.

Of course safety is a deciding factor. That's why i own an Altroz diesel instead of an i20. I am merely pointing out the areas of improvement. Safety aspect is covered by Tata already. (look at the number of 5 star cars).

What i meant was, even if the name has been altered, it would still count as an i20 and the owner can sell the car and there would be takers. Since the car is being sold now, it is not a long forgotten car. To give you an example: would i buy an used Hyundai Accent or Maruti Esteem today? No. But i can consider buying a verna or a dZire, since they are still relevant(I mean, there would be more takers for these cars). The model should live. Even after facelifts and generation changes, the car will not forgotten. We need such Tata cars.

Also, i am not mocking Tata. I am in fact very happy and proud for this achievement.

Re: Tata Motors aims for a top 3 spot in PV sales!

Amazing feat by Tata Motors.

While most of the Tata sales is driven by the products (Tiago, Altroz, Nexon, Harrier Safari, Hexa), their VFM proposition in their respective segments and some very aggressive sales and marketing strategies, the showroom and service center experience still leaves a lot to be desired. Wish them luck and strength.
