Fire at Tata Motors' vendor park (Sanand)

A huge fire broke out today at Tata Motors' plant in Sanand, located in the state of Gujarat. An official statement released by the manufacturer suggests that the fire originated in the manufacturing facility of M/s Supreme Treves. This particular vendor is responsible for supplying trim parts for the Nano. No casualties have been recorded, and the capital loss is yet to be evaluated. Around 12 fire tenders were rushed to the site in order to douse the fire.

The Sanand manufacturing facility of Tata Motors was inaugurated in 2010, exclusively for manufacturing the Nano. Currently, the company also manufactures the newly launched Tiago hatchback in the same campus. It remains to be seen whether production of the Tiago will be affected by the fire or not.

The Sanand-based manufacturing plant is spread over an area of 725 acres, and is adjacent to a 375 acres vendor park that houses all major component vendors for the Tiago and Nano.

That's bad. I'm glad there are no casualties due to this incident.

On the other hand, I wonder how many more hurdles does Tata has to cross before making a success out of the Tiago? Zika virus outbreak, the resulting renaming of Zica to Tiago, launch delays, demand shift from diesel to petrol and what not? Geez, I feel sorry for Tata Motors!

That's bad. Ever since they planned to materialize the Tata Nano idea, it always had a bumpy ride. Worse, the sales never caught with the pre-launch enthusiasm. Tiago has been doing 3K+ sales. This plus the reviews must have brought smiles to all the stakeholders of Tata. Hope they keep on having productions on par with the demand.

It seems that the fire caught at the vendor's area. Tata assembly line perhaps has not been affected. Hope, the supply of Tiago will not be affected.

Just a general question: Why are so many fires breaking out in plants? Are procedures not being followed properly? We've seen two major ones in the last two weeks. One at Maruti's vendor and now- one at Tata's vendor.

I guess the title of the thread can be corrected so people don't think the whole plant caught fire.

AFAIK Tata works by the DuPont Safety Standards, it's very hard to believe that some procedural lapse triggered this.

Hope they've insured themselves, anyway Nano isn't doing well in the market.

I think Tata have been through a lot of travail. i hope their luck improves. The current set of cars is at par with the competition in all fields.

One common takeaway is that fire incidents are more common in plastics processing units. The level of sensitivity among local suppliers regarding fire safety norms, rarely extends beyond lip service. Stranger is the fact that even if someone has invested in a proper automatic fire fighting system, ususally only the sensors are kept activated. The pump is switched on manually only after the fire is detected. The whole process of someone running to the control panel to switch on the pump, and the pump itself priming the whole pipeline takes several very valuable minutes! In this time, the small spark would turn into a blazing inferno in a plastics unit, specially if a hot and dry wind is blowing.

All this laxity, to save on operating costs!

This is just a general trend observed, no specific pointers to anyone.

As mentioned, the fire broke out in the Vendor Park and not in Tata Motor's plant premises.
No loss to any employees. Except some machinery and raw material at the Supplier location.
For sure there are some disruptions to the production schedules at Tata Motors.

Mod: seems the subject is a little miss-leading. Can we change to " Fire at Tata Motor's Vendor park"..
