Mahindra Intertrade Ltd, a unit of Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, has signed an agreement with state-run MSTC Ltd to set up India’s first auto shredding facility. The proposed facility will be equipped with fully automated end-of-life vehicle recycling equipment. This will go a long way towards efficient recycling of scrapped automobiles and the facility will help to participate in the emission targets which India has promised to fulfil via the COP 21 Emission Treaty.

A high-level meeting on 8 December 2015 at the ministry of road transport and highways proposed to allow MSTC Ltd, a company under the ministry of steel, to set up 100 vehicle-crushing units across the country.

Auto-scrapping in India is largely an unorganized activity with vehicles long past their usable life still in use, especially in rural and semi-urban India. Older vehicles are currently dismantled in an unscientific manner that’s hazardous to the environment, the company said. The extent to which a vehicle is recycled is also very minimal, with most vehicular residue making its way into landfills.

The recycling not only saves energy costs but also minimizes the need for other resources as every tonne of new steel manufactured from scrap steel saves a substantial amount of iron ore, coal and limestone.Moreover from the focus on scrapping old automobiles, it can recover significant amounts of steel scrap, aluminum scrap, plastic and rubber.

Given the new stricter norms related to road worthiness of automobiles, a huge number of vehicles are expected to come under the end-of-life category in India.

A great relief that a domestic major has taken the lead in this critical & eco-sensitive process. One hopes that M&M will stick to internationally accepted norms/standards during the complex process of vehicle scrapping.

Now this is a great news for the automobile industry in India. With the government mulling over introducing a law that will lead to scrapping of vehicles over 15 years of age, such a facility will be of tremendous help. The government also plans to give financial benefits to the people who go for scrapping of their old vehicles and purchasing new vehicles.

Such a shredding plant will give people a legal platform to carry out shredding activity and will also lead to a number of other benefits for the country namely, increased employment (100 shredding plants are expected to be constructed), increase in sales of new cars leading to growth of the automobile industry, and use of recycled material (such as steel, fabric, plastics, among others) which will lead to more efficient utilization of resources.

Come to think of it, quite a shame that India still doesn't have a car recycling facility. Hats off to Mahindra for the initiative. They'll even get steel for cheap .

Mahindra Intertrade Ltd. (a part of Mahindra group) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Metal Scrap Trading Corporation Ltd. (MSTC) to set up India's first Auto shredding facility.

The shredding facility will also be extracting huge amounts of steel, aluminium, plastic and rubber which can be recycled. These could become essential supply materials for Mahindra Intertrade which operates a wide network of steel services in the country. Also, with this plant, the company will be able to facilitate the increasing needs of steel in the car manufacturing industry.

Auto shredding in India isn't as sophisticated as in the west. Currently, vehicles which are out of use aren't disposed off in an environment-friendly manner. Mahindra says the proposed facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art, fully automated end-of-life vehicle recycling equipment.

Assuming this works well we are looking at a better environment, hopefully cheaper vehicles and much less car carcasses in scrap yards that are being disposed off in very funny ways. Full credit to Mahindra for getting into this venture

In case of dead vehicles, the scrap value of vehicle may be less than the transportation costs involved. And add to that the hassles of bargaining with scrap buyers. These are few reasons why vehicles are often left to rot. A customer friendly pick up service is must for this to succeed as environment is always secondary to convenience for most of us.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers ( SIAM) is batting for scrapping 15 year plus old cars that according to their "trumpet blowing" (to bureaucrats and politicians) are the chief polluters and need to be scrapped, after cancellation of their registrations.

This auto shredding plant is a step in that direction to get all the compulsorily retired automobiles, scrap them and earn and earn the moolah, both from the scrapped oldies and from the sales of the new ones.

Off topic : anybody who knows only basic of the automobile engine will agree that its not the age, but the efforts put in for maintenance of any engine, that contributes to the pollution.

That is completely idiotic decision though, right?

Its like any 'society', 'association' or 'tribunal' can make up any super unreasonable and unjustifiable 'law' or decision(to the general popln.) and slap some money along with it for politicians and bureacraps to pass and apply it mindlessly!!

What about the vintage and properly maintained cars!?
Will they not take a test of how much actual pollution it is making before scrapping it?? Why cancel the registration just because it is 15+ yrs old?


As you said that, its all in the maintenance, and we can prove to any 'authority' willing to accept a proper argument involving actual reasoning and brain power that, a properly maintained car(both mechanically and aesthetically) is far from causing excessive emissions!!

So called societies/authorities/governments here have taken the approach of masking the problems rather than solving them!

Hear, hear! Both perfectly valid points of view - and in a world where God is in his heaven and all is right with the world! - bureaucrats, politicians, committees/commissions appointed by them would be banned forthwith. But in the meantime, as you say, the auto shredding plant is the next best alternative.

Domestic-run metal scrap trading firm MSTC signed a joint-venture agreement with Mahindra Intertrade Ltd. to set up India’s first-of-its-kind Greenfield auto shredding and recycling capability, at a supposed cost of Rs 120 crores and having the capacity to churn out 1 lakh tonnes of steel scrap per annum.

This JV will help meet India's annual steel scrap requirement of 5-6 million tonnes, for which India is dependent heavily on imports presently. The market for this is at an estimated Rs 12,000 crores.

The Greenfield Auto Shredding Facility will commence full operations by Early 2018, once the location for the plant is finalised (either Gujarat or Maharashtra).

The joint venture agreement was signed under the aegis of the Honorable Minister of Steel and Mines,Shri Chaudhary Birender Singh. The Secretary Steel (Government of India), Dr. Aruna Sharma, graced the occasion, while senior management from the Mahindra Group - Zhooben Bhiwandiwala, Managing Partner, Mahindra Partners; Sumit Issar, Managing Director, Mahindra Intertrade Ltd. (MIL), and Shri B. B. Singh, Chairman & Managing Director, MSTC Ltd. were also present along with other dignitaries.

This first-of-its-kind in India, auto shredding facility will establish an Integrated Automotive Recycling capability for end of life vehicles - from collection, compaction, transportation, depollution, dismantling, shredding, recycling, and disposal. This JV is a significant first-step towards ensuring that end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) are recycled in a sustainably responsible manner, with the aim of 100% recycling of all materials.

Shri B. B. Singh, Chairman & Managing Director, MSTC Ltd. said, “India does not have any modern auto shredding plant as of now. MSTC-MIL will have a good partnership going ahead. We are sure of setting up a world class facility which will go a long way in recycling of ELVs and reduce dependence on mining iron ore and other resources. Apart from savings on forex as a result of import substitution of scrap, this JV would also contribute to India’s COP21 commitments.”

Secondary steelmakers in India import more than 5 million tonnes of scrap a year for recycling into finished steel. CERO (Mahindra MSTC Recycling Pvt. Ltd.) is India's First authorized recycler for motor vehicles, having received accreditation by the Delhi Government on 21st December, 2018.

CERO, a joint venture between Mahindra Accelo and MSTC (a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Steel) has established India's first organized, fully compliant, pollution free recycling facility at Greater Noida. End of Life vehicles are are collected, depolluted and dismantled at this state of the art facility. The facility embraces a Zero pollution objective, (hence the name Cero which means 'Zero' in Spanish), and the automated plant has the capacity to recycle old Trucks, Buses, Cars, Two / Three wheelers and Consumer durables.

The growing trajectory of vehicles in the market, many of which are old and unsuitable for roads, is one of the key causes of ever rising pollution levels. The National Green tribunal (NGT) had prohibited the plying of 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR, and the transport department had announced that such vehicles will be impounded if found violating the rile. Describing the pollution situation as "very critical", the Supreme Court too had directed the transport department to publish a list of such vehicles on its portal.

With plans to start operations very soon at five other locations and subsequently across the country, CERO is looking to revolutionize the vehicle recycling business and help India move towards a zero pollution nation.

One question though, what is the source or basis for this statement?

Are you saying that a well maintained, regularly serviced 2003 Maruti Alto will pollute the air 8 times more than a new 2018 model?

Please furnish some scientific evidence to support this statement.

To my mind, the mileage difference wasn't so dramatic, and hence the emissions shouldn't be dramatically different either.
