re: The Renault Captur SUV. EDIT: Launched @ Rs 9.99 lakhs

India bound Renault's crossover details trickle in. Christened as CAPTUR for the Indian market.( Incidentally the same as the European
but similarity ends in the name as it is built on the Clio platform )

Captur will be offered in petrol and diesel options, launch during this festive season. Only MT variants at launch. Will compete with Hyundai's Creta & Suzuki's upcoming Vitara and will sit above Duster in Renault India line-up.

And here is the 2018 Duster rendered,(source: Autoplus.fr)

Though the India-bound Captur has stylistic resemblances with its international counterpart, it will primarily be based on the existing Duster platform. It is expected to be positioned above the Duster in the company’s line-up.

The Captur will be powered by the tried and tested engine combinations from the Duster in place of its existing engines offered internationally. Both petrol and diesel options will be available at launch. However, both the 1.5-litre petrol and the 1.5-litre diesel variants will only be paired with a manual at launch. Renault will add an automatic gearbox and 4WD later.

To me any auto manufacturer who does not launch Automatic transmission at launch is a bummer. The market dynamics are changing as consumers are increasingly looking at auto transmission.

Wow!!!Captur at a premium to Duster with half the road presence? Does not have the interiors to command the premium. What does one get for that money? A hatch back on steroids perhaps? Why would people buy this junk over Hexa, XUV or even Creta? Does not automatic transmission as well. Does it get 4X4? Not sure if it VFM , which I agree is customer specific. I personally do not find it worth more than Duster price with the puny dimensions.

4x4 and a proper auto with 4x4/ with all bells and whistles would have been a key differentiator vis-a-vis competition and would have ensured decent foot falls in the beginning. I am not sure who does the product planning in Auto companies these days.

Quite a lot of body roll visible in those pics?

They will finally introduce an AMT transmission in such an expensive vehicle. So no use either ways.

I personally feel that the Captor does not have sales potential in the Indian market, unless they price it well below the SCross. They should look at introducing the new Duster as soon as possible instead.

I don't know what Renault officials are smoking ! The captur cannot beat the competition if priced higher than the duster. The 'Poor country' version of the Captur they are launching in India has a cheapened interior (hard plastics like the duster) and it cannot command a premium. The success of the Duster has them fooled i feel, i doubt many duster buyers will return to renault (I'm a duster owner and i would never buy a renault again, the duster ages very badly).

I think Renault is not having any any strategists or thinking management who can gauge the pulse of the market.

Their only selling models are Duster and Kwid. With the proven competency in handling & road manners of Duster, they should spruce up with what was actually missing - the interiors, instrument cluster, better HU etc.

They should introduce the completely revamped Duster and it will certainly find more buyers who wouldn't settle for anything lesser than a true but compact SUV. Although the looks appear to be dated, it still commands admiration.

From the available images of Kaptur, it is very clear that this neither carries wow-factor of duster nor seems to be equipped with modern interiors, will surely be a flop on debut. I'm not sure if Renault really can bring in a completely new & modern Car to carry forward the legacy of Duster. Rather they should retain duster and introduce new generation with only some subtle exterior styling & modern interiors. Renault - Are you listening? I'm game....

(My subjective opinion based on the looks of the 2018 Duster rendered)

If The 2018 Duster looks like the way it has been rendered, Renault is Launching another Dead on Arrival product by launching the Captur. The only guy buying the Captur would be the guy :

Who would buy the yellow Karizma ZMR
Who would buy the Lime Green Figo (old gen) with red dashboard
Who would buy the red accented XUV sports edition
...
Who would buy the Nexon if he were shopping a segment lower.

Just look at the side profile of the rear hatch and bumper, looks like a Brio.

re: The Renault Captur SUV. EDIT: Launched @ Rs 9.99 lakhs

I think looks are subjective so for me Captur looks good and that's where it stops. End of the day it's a Duster in a new dress where Duster is a SUV while Captur is a crossover.

I believe Renault should price Captur in comparison to S-Cross instead of Creta. They will be in big trouble if they decide to take on Creta with this product.

Renault may add more bells and whistles to Captur and charge a premium over S-Cross but not a benchmark to Creta.

re: The Renault Captur SUV. EDIT: Launched @ Rs 9.99 lakhs

As a new Renault owner (having bought a Duster AMT just 3 months back) I totally support the collective opinion of most Duster owner-TBHPians expressed here.

The Duster, even in its 2016 face-lifted version, is an overpriced and grossly under-equipped product. For me, the only USP was the availability of an AMT + diesel option. For many others, it's 4WD or the CVT + petrol. Frankly speaking, I can't see any VFM factor for the 2WD 110ps RxZ model at all. The car does not even have a foldable key fob.

IMHO if they launch the Kaptur (or is it Captur?) with the predicted -shocking- price range, the Hyundai Creta will be the number one beneficiary of Renault's stupidity. The Creta is priced almost exorbitantly now, and with Kaptur around with such a price tag the Creta will suddenly be seen as a very VFM product .

Renalt's CAPTUR spied again on test. Does it have the road presence to be priced above Duster?

Quite honestly the lack of enthusiasm in this thread itself points to the fact that nobody is wee bit interested in the product or the launch, unlike Compass or Nexon which has some buzz going. The design itself is very basic and nothing out of the ordinary. It is just a crossover at best. To the masses, it is just hatch on stilts. I still cannot believe Renault is marketing this to be a premium over Duster with those old school engines, without any significant addition to the features nor to the quality of the interiors. I have seen Captur personally and it just passed off as just another hatchback. Hope Renault has equipped with proper airbags and not the substandard ones. Does it get a 4X4 variant?

Not at all SUV-ish from any angle. I would prefer Duster over this. Fiver years on, Duster still looks butch and SUV-ish. Renault is faltering. They need to get their act together. I hope they don't stop Duster after they bring this one in. That would be disastrous. This car looks like a big hatchback.

I am going to go against the tide here. I actually like the design. My only interest in SUVs or Crossovers is due to our road conditions. Else, give me a sedan any day. I just hope Renault gives one thing which was missing big time in Duster, FINESSE.
