Mahindra Scorpio & XUV500 get new 1.99L mHawk diesel engine

Mahindra has launched a new version of its mHawk diesel engine which displaces 1.99L. The new engine will be offered with the Scorpio and XUV500 SUVs, and will be available in Delhi and the NCR region to begin with.

The move evidently comes in to ensure that new car sales of the two SUVs can continue in Delhi and NCR, where after a Supreme Court ruling, new diesel vehicles with engines displacing 2,000cc or higher cannot be registered.

This became a major hindrance for Mahindra as both, the XUV500 and Scorpio are powered by a 2.2L diesel engine (Scorpio base variant gets a 2.5L diesel engine). The 2.2L mHawk will continue to be offered in markets outside Delhi and NCR. Mahindra claims the 1.99L mHawk engine makes 120 horsepower in the Scorpio and 140 horsepower in the XUV500. Detailed output figures are yet to be disclosed.

Now this is extremely quick adaption to the current market situation by Mahindra! Kudos to them.
Instead of fretting over the impact on sales they have taken prompt action to ensure they still remain in the game before the other manufacturers get the advantage.
It would be interesting to see what are Tatas plans for the same.

Cheers,

re: Mahindra Scorpio & XUV500 get new 1.99L mHawk diesel engine

Wow! Talk about a quick response to market conditions.

Given the very short time between the ruling and this launch, I was curious about when they started working on the 1.99l engine.

Quote:
According to the report, the 1.99-liter mHawk engine has no power loss in comparison to the 2.2-liter unit. It will continue to produce 120 bhp on the Scorpio and 140 bhp on the XUV500. The publication was told by Mr. Pravin Shah, president and chief executive, Mahindra, that development work on the 1.99-liter engine began in August 2014, well before the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Wow that was quick! Downsizing, tuning, testing and launching the motor in just a span of a few months Nice to see an Indian manufacturer being so proactive wonder how this motor performs peak power and torque delivery means nothing if the power/torque curves are not retained. Should surely help Mahindra make a killing in the segment for the next few months atleast in Delhi

Impressed with the lightning market adaptability of Mahindra. Output figures being unchanged is another WOW factor. Hope to see Toyota and others follow as well.

re: Mahindra Scorpio & XUV500 get new 1.99L mHawk diesel engine

I'm not an expert but in this case I think Mahindra have possibly taken the route of reducing the stroke for the same bore size, which effectively reduces the swept volume hence the CC of the engine.

This would be an easier solution since the block, head and most systems will not require a major redesign, though there will be considerable design effort involved it won't be anywhere near as much as a new engine.

I do believe this will reduce the possibility of the reliability issues, but still could be niggles.

re: Mahindra Scorpio & XUV500 get new 1.99L mHawk diesel engine

Kudos to Mahindra for pulling this off in such a short turn-around time. Most of the people who'll buy these cars in Delhi-NCR will not be bothered by the reduced performance as the cars will be running on the road for 90% of the life-time and will hardly see any off-roading action.

Also, this shows the poor and short-sighted planning by the government as a company found a loop-hole in the regulation in a matters of weeks and is eligible to sell their cars again.

This also brings out the question that why was this regulation bought into action in the first place? At the max, only the large SUV's by the German car-makers and other international brands will be affected which obviously don't form the crux or don't bring in large numbers. Hence, the government is back to square one.

A better approach to handle such a problem is to get all the stakeholders together, like the government, automobile companies, the regulatory bodies and the end consumers as well and then find a way out or a solution which will be acceptable to all.

So, in the end, Mahindra: 1 - 0: Delhi government.

re: Mahindra Scorpio & XUV500 get new 1.99L mHawk diesel engine

That was super quick response !!!
Mahindra
EXCELLENT adaptation to market dynamics.

One one hand we have companies like this who adapt superquick to cater to a section of market ( not whole country), while we have lazy companies who do not do anything despite everyone screaming their lungs out as to what they want ( Fiat -for powerful engines ),or what they dont want ( Chevy against chinese junk, Renault for messy ergonomics)

P.S any NCR based BHPians please give a back to back test drive comparison of old & new engines. Curious to know how the new engine behaves

Hello guys! This is my first post on this forum and absolutely delighted to be a part of this wonderful community!

Definitely excellent work from Mahindra for the prompt response and should benefit for being the first mover. As a next step(or rather a wish), please put a competent and equally powerful petrol engine in that beast and it will be hard to contain me from rushing to the nearest Mahindra showroom!

Indeed that's the fastest response I recall by any manufacturer to any adverse change of law to their business. Given they had just a few weeks to tweak their entire engine profile and bring it out on a commercial basis on its fleet , it's simply superb. Hats off to team mahindra

re: Mahindra Scorpio & XUV500 get new 1.99L mHawk diesel engine

Just out of curiosity, would there be an actual difference in the emissions of the older 2.2 litre engine and the newer 1.99 litre engine? After all, the presumption was that diesel engines above 2 litre are more polluting and hence the ban.

Would be interesting to compare the emission results for the new and the old mHawk engines.

re: Mahindra Scorpio & XUV500 get new 1.99L mHawk diesel engine

140BHP still even after reducing 200cc from the engine is a great feat.

Ofcourse this has been done by reducing the stroke of the engine. Just amazed as to how quickly they did this.

I just hope this is Delhi spec only. I'm pretty sure the super responsive 2.2 mHawk must have lost some of it's edge with this reduction.

Thanks for the update Tushar. Mostly, Mahindra has changed the crankshaft to alter the stroke and they are using same block, head, camshaft etc. Conrod may be possibly changed.

Appreciate the fast action from Mahindra. The car market (as well as the stock market) will surely note this and appreciate them.

One query: Will Mahindra sell both 2.2 lit and 1.99 lit engine outside Delhi and NCR?

The initial post says to begin with, so I assume that the engine will come over to other states as well. Will the cost remain the same? Or will it be reduced a bit? If not, there is no reason for the other folks outside of NCR and Delhi to buy the 1.99 I guess.

Also, fantastic adaptation to market!! Within about an engine to counter the Supreme court ruling is something. Nice to see Mahindra being so proactive rather than lament about the SC ruling

If only the crankshaft (and possibly the conrod) has been changed, then we shall expect the same price. The new crankshaft with reduced throw will have same crank pin, same journal and same cylinder pitch. Just reducing the crank throw will not help to reduce the cost. On the contrary, they will be producing more varieties of the parts, which shall slightly increase the cost.
