All I can say is Well Done M&M!

Excellent response to a dunderheaded rule.

Let the Delhi Govt first look after pollution from the horrible taxis and other similar vehicles!

Indeed an excellent and fast response. However the 2000cc dunderheaded restriction is imposed by Supreme Court and not by Delhi Government. Even the removal of 'horrible taxis' by March 31, 2016 is in place.

Also, are these 1.99L engine less polluting than the current engines? If not, what is the point? Is it only the NCR three months sales that forced them to switch to 1.99L?

No one knows if they are less polluting. Its an arbitrary limit imposed by Supreme Court. No one is arguing pollution needs to be controlled but it should be done in scientific way and not these random limits.

OffTopic: This is very similar to the no film rule which is especially dangerous considering the heat and high direct sunlight.

Just wanted to know as to whether this engine is also being introduced in other models like Bolero and TUV? I feel this move may help Mahindra to garner additional sales for these models.

I don't think they will plonk the new engine in the Bolero because I feel the Bolero's chassis and body won't be capable of handling that power and torque. As far as TUV is concerned it will make a very good proposition, however the on road price will then shoot up by at least 2-3 lakhs. This is because it won't any longer attract the small car excise duty benefit (the diesel engine capacity being greater than the 1.5L limit). In that case it will lose its USP over the Scorpio (TUV top end is cheaper than scorpio top end by at least 4.5 lakhs on road) and won't find many takers.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio & XUV500 get new 1.99L mHawk diesel engine

Guys, has anyone taken the delivery of 1.99 version in NCR, wanted some feedback on the performance before i make the booking.

The dealers are not offering test drives on the 1.99 engine XUV, but they say deliveries started last week.

Is there any other changes on the car than the engine.

Very keen to learn about changes in pricing.

Mahindra launches Scorpio 1.99L, XUV500 1.99L in Delhi

Mahindra has launched the Mahindra Scorpio 1.99L and Mahindra XUV500 1.99L in Delhi

The Scorpio 1.99L is priced between Rs 9.67 lakh - Rs 12.75 lakh, while the XUV500 1.99L costs between Rs 11.58 lakh - Rs 15.51 lakh (all ex-showroom Delhi).

The only change is the mHawk diesel engine, which has been downsized from 2.2L to 1.99L, thus enabling Mahindra to sell the two models that were affected by the government's ban on registration of diesel engines displacing above 2000 cc. The 1997 cc mHawk diesel engine outputs 120 hp/280 Nm in the Scorpio which is identical to the outgoing 2.2L unit, and 140 hp/320 Nm (10 Nm down) in the XUV500. In the Scorpio and XUV500, the new engine is only available with a 5-speed and 6-speed manual transmissions, respectively, and only with 2WD.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio & XUV500 get new 1.99L mHawk diesel engine

Visited the Koncept Noida showroom last week to 've a look. The sales representative told that as of now only the 2WD variants are on sale. Though the price list has mention of the S10 4wd variant, he told that it is not available presently. Regarding the other variants in 2.2 version (e.g. s4+ 4wd) there is no mention, neither there is any confirmation of its availability in near future. Waiting to see what happens after 31st March.

Since today is 31st, is there any confirmation whether the ban is continuing or not?

Ban is continuing. SC extended the ban until further orders. Looks like a penalty of 25-30% as environment compensation needs to be paid to register diesel vehicles above 2000cc

Ban on registration of diesel vehicles above 2000 cc engines to continue: Supreme Court

Quote:
...
A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India TS Thakur said it would lift the ban only if the car makers agree to a one-time environment compensation on the registration of the vehicle which could be around 25 or 30 per cent of the vehicle cost.

The Centre in fact opened the door to such a charge by agreeing to pay a 30 per cent charge for registration of special armoured Toyota Fortuners. ...

The million dollar question, I agree. And now that the ban has been extended, M&M must be patting themselves on the back - but the niggling question of reliability & durability remains. Reducing displacement - by sleeving & reducing the bore as M&M seem to have done - while maintaining output & torque has to have some trade-off somewhere, even assuming sufficient stress margins in the original scantlings.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio & XUV500 get new 1.99L mHawk diesel engine

Hello all.

I test drove the new 1.99 XUV5OO, W10 this friday. I was surprised to know that the Sales executive did not know about the reduced max torque output. He said there was no difference in driving experience with respect to 2.2L engine.

I took the vehicle to the Noida Expressway for the test drive. The vehicle was responding well and zooming instantaneously to pressing of the accelerator pedal however I felt that 1.99L engine was struggling hard to cross the 120 Kmph mark. I have not driven the 2.2L version so have no benchmark for comparison.

Apart from the above I felt that the third bench would be a problem from my 12 & 9 year kids.

These two things and no AWL in 199L engine is holding me from going for XUV5OO. I am thinking of going with the new AWD Duster instead.

Any suggestions and pointers would be great in helping me in making the decision. Thanks.
