Does this engine have a balance shaft? From the promo cutaways, does not seem so.

Yes, doesn't look like there is balance shift. Even my old K10 did not have it. My Grand I10 diesel and 1.6 S-Cross do have balance shaft.

Re: The Maruti Baleno RS: 1.0L turbo-petrol engine. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 8.69 lakh

Took a test drive of Baleno RS today at Nexa Piplod, Surat for around 20 kms, 60% city and 40% highway, following are my observations:-

1. Thrump of 3 cylinder engine is clearly felt at idle speed. It settles down as the engine revs up.

2. Amazing acceleration after the turbo opens up past 1600 rpm, with the speed down to 25 Km/hr and crawling in 4th gear, a little push to the accelerator pedal without downshifting is enough to get the car back to momentum.

3. Had rest the fuel efficiency to zero in MID at the start of TD, on reaching back to the dealership the MID was showing 20.5 Km/ltr, perhaps it's because of small 1 litre engine capacity. Speeds maintained on highways were close to 90 Km/hr.

4. The rear disc brake callipers appears to be very small in size, as compared to what we see in other cars equipped with a rear disc brake. ( The previous generation i20 diesel which was equipped with a rear disc brake had bigger callipers).

5. The car has very healthy mid range torque, it drives effortlessly on highways. The car seems to be capable of crusing at legal speeds all day long. Difficult to make out it's a 1 litre engine.

Thanks
Harsh

Are you talking about the noise or vibration, or both?

How is the refinement at city and highway speeds? Is it diesel-like or much better?

Autocar India's review is out on YouTube. Overall it seems to be quite negative and they do not seem to be impressed with the car.

Dear Sir
I have mentioned about the noise at idle. Their is a evident thrump heard which is just like any other 3 cylinder engine( I can compare it to a Micra Petrol or a Tiago Petrol). I did not feel any vibrations on the steering or pedals.

Refinement is good, as the revs pick up, the engine becomes smooth on both city and highway.
Noise is well controlled at highways speeds it feels more refined then any other 1 litre cylinder engine IMHO.

Refinement is surely better than diesel engine of the same capacity or near to that capacity as, I am focussing on noise and vibration both.

From some of the international reviews, Suzuki seems to have skipped a balancer shaft for extra counter weights at the crankshaft and an upgraded engine mount to dampen vibration.

Mostly in the name of reduction, just like the A4 sized Ecoboost engine.

There was quite a bit of information on the Ford EcoBoost engine. No doubt the goal was promotional/ create a buzz. But underpinned by quite a bit of actual information. Unable to find anything like that for this engine. So links would be appreciated.

Here you go, Sutripta da:

Quote:
The 1.0 Boosterjet is a modern turbocharged 3-cylinder with direct injection. It produces a good 110 hp and 125 lbft of torque, enabling brisk performance for the lightweight Baleno. Although the motor is not as rev-happy as Ford 1.0 Ecoboost, it is tractable and smooth.
Like the Ford engine, it skips a balance shaft for extra counter weights at the crankshaft and an upgraded engine mount to dampen vibration, which is quite effective.
